Used to shake the puck into a bin directly.
A knock box is more convenient after I added a puck screen into the workflow.
I just use the green waste caddy
Bought one but it sucks - bucket is too small / light and moves around when bashing your portafilter on it.
Silicone bit you're hitting as well sort of bounces itself loose.
Good to know.
I have the Breville mini knock box, could have been larger, but it's aesthetically proportional to the machine.
Yep they're pretty average. I had one and then grabbed one of these as a cheapish option for our new machine pending finding something better but it's great. It has some weight and is the same width base as top so stable. Also I have realised a removable bar is irrelevant as I just throw it in the dishwasher every week or so anyway.
For those who knows this is both small and I can single handedly knock the puck out of a 700g portafilter so it's a great small option.
Yep, pathetic design. I ended up super heating a knife and melting a groove into the ends of the bar, so it then sits snugly into the box.
We have 2L yoghurt containers that we use for kitchen scraps. They have a decent rim to knock the puck out.
This.
We use a 3.5kg yoghurt bucket. Solid rim. Seals well enough without locking down the lid.
10x better than the FOGO bin provided by our council - that has proved to be a complete POS…
The best knock boxes are pretty large - the only domestic one that worked adequately came from Breville. It took up a decent amount of bench real estate (and has been pinched by one of our offspring).
We have two. One for the stuff for the worm farm and the other for the organic stuff that goes in the council green bins.
Worm farm? Caffeinated worms… Yum. Council FOGO system gets the lot from us - AND they've expanded the range of what is acceptable in that collection - our general waste bin get collected every two weeks and there is rarely anything nasty going into that at all.
@lostincanberra: We mostly put the coffee pucks in the council bin with the onion skins, orange peel, egg shells, etc.
BTW You aren’t meant to eat the worms. :)
I can recommend the Grindenstein Dreamfarm Knock box ex DJs or Meyers - good size and good value
Our Grindenstèin cracked at the back rim, due to the occasional tap from the edge of the portafilter.
Replaced it with an Avanti knock box which does seem less brittle.
TL;DR? Recommend the Grindenstèin and the Avanti knock box.
This was $9.95 with an extra 40% off when I bought mine a few weeks. I still don’t think it’s worth it at that price as it’s too small to be effective.
I would suggest to hold off buying at this price as it will likely get discounted again.
I just use one of our bowls. $10 saved!
