Aldi 18650 Battery Hack, thanks to SteveAndBelle

A good source of 18650s is ALDI Power Tool packs. The 2Ah packs have five and the 4Ah packs have ten genuine Samsung 2000mAh Unprotected Flat-Tops which work perfectly in the C8s. The 4Ah pack frequently goes on sale for $40 so is a good way to get a heap of good quality cells for $4ea. Yes, they're 'only' 2000mAh but still a very good deal.

In case anyone else is interested, I recently purchased a 4Ah pack specifically to pull apart… unscrew the four screws then use sharp side-cutters and/or pliers to carefully pull/pop the straps off the ends of each cell. Job done.

  • Really want a powerful torch that is only on/off and zoom! But a decent size (portable)

  • +3

Now where's Eneloop lithiums type of deals to power all these Thorfires?

  • 18650 Rechargeable Battery, can anyone recommend some brand please?
    Varies a lot on eBay.
I do have a dead rechargeable mower battery pack from Aldi, the green one. Can I savage from it?
    I wonder what's inside a 2200mAh stick power bank?

    • +2

Most likely you can, see SteveAndBelle's comment here. Added it to the description.

      • Why the INCR18650-30Q rather than the NCR18650B? This torch sure as hell doesn't need 15A and protected is safer.

    • +5

I prefer protected cells myself having lost a testicle during an earlier experiment.

These guys have them, and also think about whether you're into nipples or not.

      • +4

I don't need my testicles so I'll go with the unprotected ones.

        • +2

          I need mine for ballast.

      • +2

You're probably going to need to elaborate on that story for educational purposes…

  • +1

    Thanks grabbing a few

  • Doesn't unprotected mean explosion or fire risk?

    • Only if you can't follow instructions. The torches generally have low voltage cutoff. And the majority of modern cells have multiple inbuilt safeties.

    • +4

      Well, potentially yes.

While usually as long as they're steadily charged with love and tenderness without excessive drama, and steadily drained in pretty much the same way, and stored in whatever way they're best stored, then you're unlikely to have a problem.

But given imperfections arise in both physical elements and the human condition (especially in the condition of humans of my acquaintance), and the fact that i prefer to retain my surviving testical while acknowledging that @WatchNerd has no need for his, i would go protected.

The marginal cost is minimal and not doing so a false economy.

      • +2

Depends on the torch. Protected cells can't power high output lights like some zebralights and armyteks, but those lights have low voltage protection so swings and roundabouts I guess.

        • +1

Yeah but there are very few flashlighs that actually need 15A.

        • @potplanty: Most protection circuits will kick at around 7-8amps. The main issues with protection circuits is the internal resistance will be much higher than an unprotected cell meaning less overall output.

        • +1

@aussieprepper: An elevated output blew my nut off.

  • +4

    Thanks TorchNerd.

TorchNerd is the guy who left the solitary review on the product. We need him on OzBargain

I'm thinking of becoming Domino's Nerd.

  • +4

ten genuine Samsung 2000mAh Unprotected Flat-Tops

    I like unprotected flat tops.

    Regards,
    Scab

    • +5

      Oh grow up.

  • Does this have a micro USB charging port or do you need a separate charger.

    • +1

      Separate charger.

      • Damn it sold my awesome charger on ebay.

        • Then buy another awesome charger and smell the newness when it arrives, knowing that your old musty charger has found a new owner who loves that preloved smell.

        • @jlogic:

Don't use enough rechargeables to justify a decent charger

        • +2

I got the 2 slot version LiitoKala Lii when TA posted it for $3.41 shipped & it works fine -

  • Anyone know if it is possible to convert a flat top to nipple? Need nipple ones for my other torches but would love to use the aldi hack.

    • +1

Either solder blob the cells, or buy some small neodymium magnets. I've used magnets in the past when waiting for new cells with no issue but solder is a longer term solution

      • Soldering only works if you scrape off enough of the metallic coating on top so that it actually has something to stick to.

    • +4

Put them in the fridge and they'll develop nipples.

    • +1

Yes just use a flat blade precision screwdriver. Bend up the three rounded tabs of the flat top. Tada instant buttonise!

  • Need to deduct GST when calculating Cashrewards.

  • How does this compare to led lenser p7?

    • From memory the P7 is weaker in terms of light output.

  • i ened up buying this https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B073QPZTQK/ref=oh_aui_d… …not on sale but looks good
