Looking for a decently specced mobile phone to replace my old semi-functional S6 and not keen to spend upwards of one grand on the new S9.
Came across the flagship Honor 10 which is a "no-frills" version of the Huawei P20.
Seems to be reasonably priced at around the AUD 575 mark (incl. delivery) for the 128 GB, even cheaper after cashback.
Huawei Honor 10 (4GB RAM 128GB ROM Kirin 970 Octacore 4G) AUD $575.39 @ Banggood

Do avoid Huawei, not because of the Chinese government spying matter but because they decide to lock the bootloader to all future users. While most users don't require the use of their bootloader or even bother about it, its rather stupid and insulting when they first promoted their phones to xda as 'developer friendly'.
Might as well get the xiaomi or vivo which are gonna release their newest models with 710 chipsets anyway (Xiaomi Max 3 pro, Mi 8SE, vivo nex A)
Its not the matter of spying that I care. They are locking developer options meaning you can't custom rom or delete the bloatware that comes with it. While most people don't care about these stuffs I rather my phone be bloatware free
I mean if you actually read what I said the first sentence literally says its not about the spying but because they are locking the bootloader. Heck I even gave other phones with similar hardware that are from Chinese owned companies. Aren't you just being weird for no reason?
@dealhunt: are u blind
@ilikeblue: But you do imply that the Chinese government spy on you hence I said the Australian tax payers' funded agencies don't.
@Jonski: No I'm not blind.
My last 3 phones have all been locked and developer unfriendly, still I don't think that's any reason for a regular phone user to not buy a phone. Majority of folks wouldn't even know or care. So having just ditched the Pixel 2 due to a broken camera from using the phone as a GPS on my bike, I've now got a p20 and truth be told it's my favourite phone to date. If the 10 is remotely like it then I'm sure it will be a good option for many people.
No doubt hardware wise its a good option for majority of people but still they went back on their words when they promised and promoted their phones on XDA that it would be developer friendly. I'm also currently using a huawei nexus 6p and with the amount of problems the phone has had in the last year I'm not that confident on getting another huawei device soon
They changed their policy and gave advanced warning. Anyone who purchased a Huawei(or Honor) thinking they wanted to unlock the bootloader would have been able to get an unlock code.
For anyone purchasing now, it's like any other phone that has an unlockable bootloader. It's not like they pulled a bait and switch making you stuck with a locked bootloader when you purchased thinking otherwise.
You can't get the unlock code anymore, i think you meant anybody purchasing now will have a locked bootloader and not meant that it has an unlocked bootloader like any other phone.
@ilikeblue: For the Lenovo P2 you can still unlock it but you need to make a request within the phone's settings and wait 14 days to have it unlocked, but Lenovo will void the warranty.
My phone works very well so I don't see the need to install this rom and that rom and always complaining because they are not 100% perfect.
I think the Chinese companies are tightening the options for security reasons because all phones communicate each other also in other nations (including China) bank transactions and micro transactions are a common thing.@ilikeblue:
Yeah, meant un-unlockable hah. All phones come with a locked bootloader as default.
Still. . at this price point and if none of these limitations bear any impact, I think it is a pretty compelling phone.
A 3400mAh battery isn't enough for a phone of these sizes and power also no band 28 so no love from me.
What's the difference in marketing strategy between P series and Honor series?
The Honor was established as a subsidiary of Huawei to target the young generation. It's also slightly more affordable than the P and Mate series by the parent company.
Get the phone in black and it instantly becomes a more serious-looking phone
Honor View 10 is probably cheaper and better ( has microSD support)
The View 10 is actually slightly more expensive. It also has a bigger battery
Initially I read it as Huawei Horror…
Personally, I'm holding fire for news on the Huawei 10 GT. It was released in China yesterday & the specs look fantastic. Games & videos are a key aspect for my phone.

The guys at Huawei/Honor have been busy…
If you want a gaming phone might as well wait for the asus ROG one, seems likes its going to be the most powerful model (in terms of benchmarking at least) for this year
Surprisingly this had skipped me by. Looks very impressive & I like the look too. I just hope the camera on these phones is respectable at last.
I hope these phones will push for better games on Android.
Probably looking at 4 digit price. But then if your budget permits…
If gaming were important, I'd stick to Snapdragon 845 or 835 over Kirins(or Exynos for that matter). Adreno shits all over the Mali GPUs.
Kirin 980 is supposed to have an in-house custom GPU, and Samsung is also reportedly working on a custom GPU so interesting times ahead.
@TheContact: The Xiaomi black shark looks a contender too. Even has a mini joystick plugin for the home key. Pubg would be great with that! I'll be waching these phones closely the coming months.
But the xiaomi black shark looks horrible…
@sydgun
The price should be cheaper than a s9, probably around the price of OP6 I think?
@ilikeblue: It's definitely an acquired taste. The 10GT & ROG look on the money. Razor 2 later in the year too.
Was there any new news on the razer 2? All I saw was the rumoured pricing (890aud?)
@ilikeblue: Nothing concrete on price or release date but it's expected later this year. I'd expect it to be more than $890 too.
That's still a lot of money for something with a 3 year average lifespan
@Sydgun: Say it retails for $1k. So, $333 per year/$27pcm. That's pretty respectable when you consider how much phones are integrated, in most peoples lifes.
I spend more on coffee over 3yrs! :)I work with a few people, who bought the latest (full specced) Iphone when it was released. Now that's what I call expensive & not value for money.
Lol…use the work coffee machine (if there is one). That's an extra $80 in your pocket.
@Sydgun: We have a coffee machine at work but I'm a coffee snob. Some things in life are worth splashing out on & coffee is definitely one of them! Money is meant to be spent :)
I bow to your extravagance or decadence :)
"extravagance or decadence" - Coffee is hardly either but you can bow away ;)
I would still rather get the ROG over the razer though. I think the only advantage the razer has is the 144hz screen? But its not like its going to make any difference since I don't think any games run 144hz.
Btw chocolate/tea > coffee :)
@ilikeblue: Agreed. From what I've seen of the ROG it looks ahead of the pack. I would like to see some benchmarks against the Huawei 10GT though.
BTW Chocolate (Dark) > Coffee = :)
@Sydgun: Would rather drink battery acid :)
Roflmao
Well based on early benchmarks for snapdragon 710 and the ROG, single core the difference is negligible but multi-core the ROG almost doubles the 710 (in this case xiao mi 8se)

Interesting! Looking forwasrd to seeing more on it. I believe the ROG goes on sale in India tomorrow for about $1,260. Althoughe expect thats the 128GB version.
The One Plus 6 scored very well. Signifciantly cheaper too.
No band 28 it seems
