The Leatherman Wave is probably one of the most popular in Leatherman's line-up. It has a good assortment of tools whilst not being too big.

Here's the official product page:

https://www.leatherman.com/wave-10.html

Here's the tool list:

*Needlenose Pliers
*Regular Pliers
*Premium Replaceable Wire Cutters
*Premium Replaceable Hard-wire Cutters
*Electrical Crimper
*Wire Stripper
*420HC Knife
*420HC Serrated Knife
*Saw
*Spring-action Scissors
*Ruler (8 in | 19 cm)
*Can Opener
*Bottle Opener
*Wood/Metal File
*Diamond-coated File
*Large Bit Driver
*Small Bit Driver
*Medium Screwdriver

The 'Plus' version is a 2018 update of the Wave that addresses a key feature many people have been asking for- the plier head now has the replaceable 154CM (that's the type of steel, not how big they are!) wire cutters (the same as other models like the Rebar and Supertool 300 have). Other than that, the only difference between this and previous versions is that the Nylon sheath is a new design- from what I've read, most reviewers think it is pretty good also.

I was waiting for Leatherman to release this version of the Wave before I got myself one, and this is the cheapest price I've found for an Australian seller.

There's also the option to change to a leather sheath, which adds about $10 to the price.

Don't forget to buy two, so that you have a replacement when airport security screeners steal it from you when flying.

Airport security workers must have so many nice little items like this in their possession… I guess it's one of the perks.

(They tried to thieve my tiny keychain Laser pointer last time. 10 min "discussion with their supervisor" before I could keep it. Yeah, like they didn't already know it was harmless.)

err its got a knife on it.. what did you expect?

If you bought two and took it in a plane, you'd have 2 taken away from you, what's the point? #logic

  • The description on ebay doesn't include: "*Electrical Crimper". Does anyone know if it actually has crimper?

    • I imagine it's just the rounded part of the pliers that doesn't fully close?

    • Persay… You have a comfortable enough grip to crimp the clamp ends/joiners. But obviously couldn't crimp things like Ethernet. I have crimped coax, although not terribly neat, with a Wave.

    • If you go to the product page in the OP, you can click on each of the tools in the list on the left hand side, and it will show you where the corresponding tool is on the multi-tool.

For the Wave, the 'electrical crimper' tool is at the rear of the plier heard (if that makes sense, the diagram makes more sense).

Personally I avoid crimping wires with these if possible- they can do it in a pinch, but not really one of their strengths.

18 tools that don't work very well, great!

Please explain? May I add - Leatherman warranty is amazing! I've sent two different models back, they sent me new ones on both occasions, after I'd used them far beyond their design. It's something like a 25-30year guarantee.

He meant that any tool on the leatherman wouldn't perform nearly as well as a dedicated tool. Leatherman screwdriver vs regular screwdriver etc.

Obviously a Leatherman can't replace a toolbox, but a compact multi-tool you can take with you (almost) anywhere? They're great.

If you are deliberately using something like this in place of dedicated tools, you are doing it wrong.

I've owned various Leatherman multi-tools over the last 20 years, and they have been extremely useful in both my work, and life in general. Where they shine is those circumstances where a tool is needed, but you didn't know that in advance. Sure, there are still times where the Leatherman won't be suitable and you need to reach for the 'real' tools, but I've found that in the majority of cases my multi-tool can get the job done.

The best example I can give you is my workplace. I'm a bit of a 'jack-of-all-trades' type of maintenance / IT / electrical person, working on large multi-building sites. I have an extensive collection of 'real' tools, but carrying them all around with me all of the time is just not practical.

Whereas having a multi-tool on the belt, combined with a torch, I find I can tackle around 70% of the jobs that come up without any extra tools. The extra 30% of jobs still need the dedicated tools though.

To say that they 'don't work well' is a very simplistic and ignorant way to describe them.

  • An essential part of any fishing/camping kit….mine has never let me down and this new version is even better.

I missed the old days where Aus dollar was strong and no import tax from overseas. I got mine for Aus $60 from US some time ago, also bought a few for mates.

From experience, I like WAVE stainless steel the best compare to Surge, the WAVE size is just right.

  • Catch had these for $119 the other week.
