781

First post, yay!
Was searching ebay plus deals for a a6300 body and bumped into this one from TGG website.
$849 straight, already better than the "plus only, 25% off" deals. Plus $150 EFTpos (all AUS stock will get), making it $699!
Bought one myself, but it's has to be delivered so another $8.

  • Decent camera. As good as the A6500 if you're using an IS lens. At this price, it's a steal.

What lens you recommend for this?

    • That depends on your requirement, what type of photography you intend on doing?

      • Need something for the wife, she is going india on holidays, maybe something like all in 1 would be great, she is sick of changing lenses on our old nikon

        • Sounds like she needs a zoomable lens that would be versatile enough for her. I don't know much about sony lenses tho.

        • 24-70 F2.8

        • +3

I would recommend the Sony 18-105 F4 OSS G lens. It’s a great travel lens, covers a wide focal range, and has a constant F4 aperture. The lens also has Optical SteadyShot which is a nice benefit to have given the A6300 doesn’t have inbuilt stabilisation. The lens itself isn’t too expensive either at around 600 dollars.

I own the lens and pair it with my A6500. It’s my go to travel lens. The only thing I will say is it will struggle with night shots given the F4 aperture.

Also something to consider is the A6300 is a an APSC sensor which means the 18-105 is closer to 27-150mm. You could go for something like the 24-70 but it might be too narrow for an APSC sensor - as it becomes 36-105mm.

        • +2

the 18-105 F4 is good, but it is BIG. The 18-135 is smaller but not as fast at the long end. Optically there is a slight trade off for centre vs corner sharpness from my 2 minute google :D

        • Thanks for all the tips, last question, a6300 or a6500?

        • @shalashaska:

I use the Sony 18-105 F4 OSS G lens on my 6300 but I think its been discontinued now, hard to get, but a great all purpose lense

        • +1

@phunkydude: That is full frame and will be too narrow on the wide end for the apsc body.

        • A zoom lens for "E" mount and not "FE" is what you need in that case then, the kit lens is ok if absolutely sharpness and low light is not a requirement. That along with prime will do the job.

        • @bniko: the a6500 is probably $500 more, so it is a value proposition.

        • +1

The new sony 18-135 kit lens is really good. It’s a great walkaround zoom and if you’re getting that lens, the cheapest way to get it is in the kit. Buying it separately to the body will be around $800+ just for the lens.

        • +3

I would get her one of the RX100 cameras instead

        • +1
        • +1

@Risto: You can get it for less via their ebay store with penny5. $604+$8 shipping before $50 gift card form Sony

        • "sick of changing lenses" = a sony RX100 might be a better bet than this.

depends how keen she is on photography though. If she just wants photos of all the places she's been I'd get an RX100, a mkIII or IV will do. If she's going to India and is the type of person who wants to make a photobook when she gets back or knows who Steve McCurry is there's nothing I could say to reflect how highly I would recommend a small two lens prime kit.

the hands down best thing about a little mirrorless camera like this is that you can easily mount beautiful (and extremely cheap for what they are) manual lenses and get focus peaking.

        • My travel lens combo is the FE 16-70mm F4 OSS, and the F 28mm f2.8 Prime lense(Great for night shots, but has no in built stabilisation so that is something to consider.)

        • India is often crowded with lots of people around. She may find an all in one with a bit of zoom (eg 200mm) is the best option; not something that requires you to be too close or takes too much time to set up or is too bulky

That said it’s virtually impossible to take a bad photo in India. Bring a lot of memory cards

        • @dtc:

I have several cameras, all Sony. However I went ahead and bought rx100 VI, I think the zoom range is great for a pocket-able camera. I don't think you can beat RX100VI as a travel camera.

        • @nadan: just had a look at it and the VI does look nice. I’m old enough to really appreciate a viewfinder; and the rest of it looks almost perfect for a travel camera

    • sony sel 50 1.8 :)

    • 18-135mm and a prime like 35mm and you are set

    • Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens.

This one of latest lens that has really good reviews. Around $500-$600 for the lens.

  • Great deal!

  • Insanely good deal!

  • Been using this camera for a year now (for a lot more money sadly…) and it's been great

  • Would this camera be suitable for jewellery/product photography?

    • +4

You need a macro lens for that. Two components to photography, body and lens. This is just the body. Any camera body is suitable, the more important bit is the macro lens

    • +2

Absolutely suitable, in that case you need to invest in a good lighting setup. The lighting will determine the quality of your image.

      • +3

        good lighting setup

        Yeelights and aluminium foil.

        • Thanks @cwongtech and @nadan

    • +3

This with a Macro lens and a light box. Don't forget the tripod

  • Great deal! Grabbed one posted. Cheers :)

  • Anyway to use my canon lenses on this one? If yes, then it is advisable?

    • Short answer - yes, multiple products to do that. A google search will give you plenty of options and a run down of some of the issues to consider (e.g. manual focus on manual adaptors).

  • Anyone know if it's possible to get a gift receipt? So the recipient doesn't know how much I saved and feels a bit more glow-y inside?

    • +1

Good guys won't include the 5% or cashback in the invoice - if that's still "too cheap" you would probably just have to register the product for the recipient and provide those details if warranty is required in future or just hold onto the receipt and give it to them if they need to do a warranty claim down the track…

  • A6500 for $1336 (after cashback) at TGG, is it a good price? https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/sony-a6500-body-only-ilce6500…

    • Honestly, I'd personally choose the A6300 and get good lens with it. For the $500 saving you can put that towards a good lens that has stabilisation in built. Lens matters more than the body for the most part.

    • +1

$990 after cash back and 25% here: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/323023298137

      • Will video pro invoice work for cashback?

        • i should have said eftpos card, yes they will.

  • I use my iPhone X for my photography needs, any advantage using this separate camera these days??

    • +2

Heaps depending on usage ie astrophotography, high dynamic range for post processing, depth of field, interchangeable lenses, low light performance, focus speed, great high iso etc

    • +1

Depends if you're printing them out or not.
Not needed unless you want specific effects, or hard shots
The best camera is the one that's with you. - Chase Jarvis

      Depends on your use.
What do you want to use it for?

      • I actually have Nikon D600 but I rarely use it these days because its too heavy especially travelling with a baby and a kid. Therefore, I just use iPhone X. But this camera is only APS-C sensor compared to my D600 FX format. So I am not sure how the quality fared.

My photography needs are portraits only. If I can be convinced that this camera does the same quality as D600, I might switch.

        • +2

It's an APS-C sensor, the d600 is a full frame. Outside that though, the 6300 absolutely outstrips the iphone X(I have both) in quality of shot. It is also much lighter and smaller than the D600, but obviously not a light as a phone, you will have on your person anyway.

        • +1

I switched from a D610 to a Fuji XT20… the amount of photos we take now has increased tenfold. I do process photos though, so if you're not into doing that, just keep going with your phone. Like @cwongtech quoted, whatever camera you have on you is better than no camera on you.

Totally forgot about Chase Jarvis! I remember coming across him when I first started photography all those years ago!

Only if you use lightroom / know what youre doing in lightroom then yes shooting in RAW is awesome

Those looking for a lens to pair with the A6300 may benefit from this deal via eBay.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sony-A6300-Camera-w-18-135mm-Zoo…

It comes to about 1,200 after discount and the lens goes for about 900 normally.

Great light kit for all in one travel lens for situations with good lighting.

    • t comes to about 1,200 after discount and the lens goes for about 900 normally.

$1100 affer the eftpos card from Sony.

      Lens is not $900 tho.

    • Thanks, I just purchased this kit … this lens is perfect for my needs

  • +2

The one on eBay through video pro online is a better deal, because you get the SEL18135 and A6300 body for $1200 + $100 (eft card), so basically $400 for a very very good lens

    • Should it be $150 eft card in line with JB and GoodGuys? $100 seems to be an error on VideoPro website

      • +1

        $150 body only
        $100 body with 18-135mm

        no error

  • How well does this camera record videos, e.g. home-videos style/family videos

    • +1

It is an EXCELLENT Video Camera

      • thanks!

    • +1

the video quality is excellent, but you will chew through batteries like crazy.

      • thanks, ill keep that in mind

    • +1

4K and very good quality, I have been using it to track our band in the recording studio recently and very happy with the results. It will chew your battery up in about an hour though. So if you want to film longer than that, I recomend getting a couple extra batteries. You will also want a lens that has image stabilisation, or put it on a tripod though, I learnt that the hard way when I used my 28mm f2.8 and it was like I hard Parkinson's when we watched that video back. Anything with OSS will have you laughing though, looks gorgeous.

      • thanks, appreciate it

BEWARE this camera has SERIOUS overheating issues when recording video 1080p AVCHD. I've used multiple versions and most videographers I've spoken to have canned this model.

    • How long are you talking? I shoot video in small bursts maybe 10-15secs at a time.

    • Use UHS-II memory card.

    • Not anymore after the firmware update …

    • Yea back in 2016 it did……

    • I've not had any problems with mine and have recorded sets at gigs with it at 4k.

  • Damn, just got the out of stock email :(

    • rang the goodguys and they said stock Australia wide is at -25. Apparently it'll be a 2 to 3 week wait until the cameras arrive (they need to get them from Sony). Surprised no one else has got the same email - looks like it's handled by the closest good guys store even if you select delivery and my local store is ACT Fyshwick

      • Got a call from my local store and said they will have to order them in as no one has any in stock and it will be couple of weeks.

  • Price match it at JBHIFI for local pick up, if there's no stock at TGG. You'll lose out on the cashrewards though.

    • if you have a sony kiosk closeby they will price match too

  • Just a heads up for anyone that ordered and is waiting for TGG to get stock in - to be eligible for the cash back, you have to register by 15/08/18 https://promotions.sonyanz.com/eftposgiftcard#faqs If TGG are saying it could be weeks before stock is in, you could miss out on the cash back.

    • Yeah thought that however gg tell me it should be delivered within a fortnight… and the cheque's in the mail!!!! See what happens…

    • Wow that is extremely concerning, surely that can’t happen? I would go to the ACCC if it does since it advertised the $150 cashback on TGG website as well as fast delivery. TGG is becoming a joke

  • I missed all the Amazon deals and just got an email saying its out of stock and will be cancelled.

    • If you have $300 more the a6500 is a bargain: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/323023298137

      • nice, and also minus $150 cashback

    • yeh it's now showing up as "page not found"

It was definitely working about an hour ago

  • Is someone able to send me a screenshot of the Goodguys page with the A6300? I'm aware it's taken down, forgot to screen shot it.

  • +1

For anyone who had theirs back-ordered, got a call monday saying that Sony shipped the camera to the store and got another call yesterday afternoon that it was ready to be picked up. So easily made the cutoff for the cash-back, you also get a $50 voucher to use on the sony store inside the box.

    • I've just been called and told that the order won't be delivered until October. Not sure what to do. Pretty disappointing.

  • I missed this deal. If you purchased this camera but want to change your mind please PM me. Thanks.
