Wow, so many don't read the comments and don't know the minimum income is 75K

  • I wonder how many people hang around for the second year and pay the fees? Has anyone got them to give you a significant incentive to hang around with these cards?

    • +1

They'll often offer the second year free if you try and cancel, but that's rarely worth doing if you're just churning cards for points.

      • thanks for the info.

      • Not for us, pushed hard but they wouldn't budge so we cancelled the card and moved to NAB

    • +6

If you want to be a complete prick aka me, you call about 6 months in, state you don't use the card and if they ask what will keep you around say you want QFF points, I got ANZ a few years back to gift me 10K points, then I cancelled at the 11th month anyway.

      • +1

I sit at the seat of the master.

      • +2

Assuming that you're primarily in it for the points, let's compare the complete prick method versus churn and burn:

        complete prick method:
        * Min spend in 3 months, get bonus points of 120 K, credited in say month 5. Plus around 6 K points on the spend.
        * Call at 6 months to cancel, get 10 K points to stay.
        * Cancel at 11 months.
        * Then wait 18 months for amex exclusion timeout, and repeat.
        * Monthly earn rate = 18 + 11 = 29 months for 120 + 6 + 10 = 136 K points, or 136/29 = 4.7 K points / month. Even if you cancelled at 7 months shortly after getting the 10 K, it would still be 136/(29-4) = 5.44 K points / month.

        Churn and burn is:
        * Min spend in 3 months, get bonus points of 120 K, credited in say month 5. Plus around 6 K points on the spend.
        * Call and cancel in month 5 straight after getting points.
        * Then wait 18 months for amex exclusion timeout, and repeat.
        * Monthly earn rate = 18 + 5 = 23 months for 120 + 6 = 126 K points, or 126/23 = 5.47 K points / month.

Whilst the complete prick method does provide entertainment value, churn and burn is just more efficient, i.e. gets you the same or very slightly more points/month, but with less effort (fewer phone calls, less talking) and less to remember and less risk (e.g. no chance of forgetting to cancel in the 11th month and incurring a $499 annual fee charge).

  • +1

OP, you post this as a standalone MasterCard deal for $80k points but the comments seem to indicate that you only get the annual fee waived the 1st year when you take the AmEx as well?

    • +1

I can't see any way to take the standalone MasterCard - must be bundled with Amex. What a shame

      • Amex comes free anyway… why not have it too…

        • Does the Amex have to be ACTIVATED in order to receive the $0 annual fee?
          I don't think so, right?

  • Thanks OP!

This is perfect. I had to wait until the 21/7 for my previous 12 month period to expire.

I had the Platinum deal bookmarked, now instead i can go for the Black deal. Whoop whoop!

  • but again,

Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Altitude Platinum Visa Card or Altitude Black Mastercard, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

  • +1

DO I need to put in a PROMO code? I had one prefilled (QBX12) but it comes up with an error when I try and go to the next page?

  • +1

Anyone can confirm successful application with $0 fees? I've just applied and customer service were not able to confirm.

    • Click on the link to the deal and it states there are no fees until the 2nd year.

      Westpac Altitude Black Mastercard

      • Yep, saw that when I applied. My question relates to anyone actually getting $0 fees ok after applying. I just got my approval email and notice it includes the following:

        Description of credit card
        Product name Altitude Black
        Minimum credit limit $15,000
Minimum repayments 2% of the closing balance outstanding, or $10, whichever is greater. If the closing balance is less than $10, it must be paid in full.
        Interest on purchases 20.24% p.a.
Interest-free period Up to 45 day(s) on purchases
Interest on cash advances 20.74% p.a.
Balance transfer interest rate 20.74% p.a.
        Annual fee $250
        Late payment fee $15.00

        Credit fees and charges
Annual Card Fee $250.00 annual fee. Charged to your account following the first cash advance or credit purchase transaction and charged to your account in subsequent years on or after the anniversary of the first charge.

        • Received card and summary. States the above but with "first year $0 annual fee" . Then following subsequent years $250 etc etc

        • @Sweetnsour:

Thanks, I'll wait for card delivery. Not sure why Westpac's welcome email didn't show accurate data…

        • Thats exactly what I received. Got the card in the mail and there was no further detail. The Amex I received did come with a notification that first year was waived thoug :/

        • To follow this up, I called up Westpac and was transferred to the correct department. The person I spoke to looked into it and said that only Visa cards had the fee waived and looking at my account and the promo code attached to it I had to pay the annual fee and qantas fee. I told her that was obviously incorrect and I was looking at the promotion in front of me. And after being told a bunch of times that I was wrong and that I had to pay it I was put on hold again and the person came back with something like "Well if thats what it said you applied for they will be waived". I couldn't get anything more official out of the person, but was told that she made notes of this on my account. Not sure i believe that though as she was horribly rude.

        • @TomMor: I received my Amex card today and the Letter of offer part is at the back of the 1 pager that the card was attached to. It clearly states for me that there is no Annual fee on the Amex for the first year.

        • @ozeone: Hi, yes I received the same thing. But for the Mastercard it said I had both an annual fee and a Qantas fee starting in the first year.

        • @TomMor: I haven't received my MC yet so will keep an eye on it. Thanks for the heads up!

        • @TomMor: just received the card, same situation here

        • @countmein: did you receive a welcome letter that has a sunmary table in a separate letter?

  • Does this means I need to spend $3000 on Mastercard and another $3000 on Amex for this deal? Can I just spend $3000 on the Mastercard and get those 80k points?

    • Would also like to know this. Can I just get the Amex and keep it in a locked cupboard and use the MC for the 80k?

  • +1

I applied and was approved for this card. I received an email with a "Financial Table" providing specific details about my contract with Westpac. In this document it lists both an Annual fee and the Qantas rewards fee. Does anyone who was approved have these fields as waived? Or is it simply boilerplate?

    • +1

I'd say it's a generic email they send out.

I wouldn't worry about it. Take a screenshot of the T&Cs that state no annual fee just for safe keeping.

    • did you receive the card?

any fees on the account after first transaction?

  • +1

I spoke with Westpac on the phone yesterday.

    They advised of the following:

    • 2x credit checks.
    • The Mastercard is through Westpac banking system and the Amex is through Amex banking system.
    • If you meet the min required spend on Mastercard you will get the 80,000 points regardless of what you do with the Amex.

For me individually, it would be very hard to spend over 6k in 3 months to take full advantage of the 120k points on offer. What i'll do is use the Mastercard and give my partner the Amex. We both spend at least 1k each a month. Easy work around for 120k points.

    • I’m assuming this would mean that if you have held an AmEx issued card in the last 12 months you won’t get the points?

  • +1

I also found out that if you only apply for the westpac card you don't get the annual fee waved. It must be in a bundle.

Hopefully someone knows a way around it for I'd love to find out how.

    • Would love it if someone could figure it out

    • Where is that in the T&C's?

I applied for and have received the Mastercard - don't intend to proceed with the Amex application at all. Still expecting the 80k points and waived fees

  • Does anyone know if this deal is able to give you Altitude points rather than Altitude Qantas points if you don't opt in to Qantas? Or is it a specific Altitude Qantas points only deal that allows waiving of the annual fee?

    • You can chose the preferred reward program i.e. whether Altitude or Qantas points in the online application.

  • +1

I churn 1 or 2 cards every year and have a good income & no debt. I have a Westpac savings account. Westpac is the only institution to have ever knocked me back for a CC.

    • I wonder if therein lies the problem? I have never applied to Westpac for a card and am considering this being my 5th application this year. Since I don't bank with Westpac, the advantage I have is that I have no previous relationship with them for which they could make inferences, they would need to query the Credit agencies for which I know already what they have documented on my file.

  • Can anyone confirm that donations are counted in the minimum spend? Any way to verify you have reached the required minimum spend?

    • +1

Yes, donations are counted towards minimum spend. You first have to withdraw cash using credit card and deposit the money to a bank account where you are donating. I will send you the bank details where you need to deposit the money to make it work. :)

      • Not sure if trying to be funny

  • +1

Good deal OP. I reckon as a single living alone, $6k in 3 months is going to be very hard though….

    Hmmm

    • +3

Stock up on Wish Gift cards through Cashrewards.

      • Can you use the Amex on the CR/Wish cards site?

    • +1

Can you do a deal with some of your other family members, i.e. you take them to buy their groceries etc and then they can transfer the money to your bank account. You might need to give them some incentive to do it though.

      • Egift card. 5% off groceries is incentive enough, plus save you time of shopping with them.

    • Time to go on a holiday :)

    • +2

or get a wife…. and kids.

      • But life is so simple now :)

  • I wonder if they planned this, first the $50 platinum one through finder, then $0 platinum for everyone, then $0 black, to pick off the churners first and then only attract normal applicants. (I went for the $50 finder deal and got the Platinum Visa but my application wasn't passed on to Amex).

    • definitely a planned rollout of the offers.

  • Ha! Westpac approved with a $40k limit. /rolls eyes.
Amex declined the card, perfect outcome really.

    • perfect outcome really.

Yes and no. No because they accessed your credit file, yes because 40k points with $3k is not the best deal.

      • Yes and no. No because they accessed your credit file,

not bothered by the credit file thing.
The credit application is the whole point of the credit file so I see no issue with it being accessed.

I recd a copy of my credit file and it has a bunch or errors on it, but that's not my concern, only indicates to me the ridiculousness of it. Input errors by Banks in the distant past mostly. Interestingly, I thought items dropped off after 5 years, yet I saw addresses on the file from 1987.

    • Wow what a limit. You must be on very high income to get approved for such high limit.
I am sadly been declined and they don't give me specific reason.

      • They never give a reason.

    • I'd suggest closing any unnecessary cards a few weeks before you apply for any offers. Also always apply for minimum credit limit to avoid application rejection. After spending the $3000 and getting the bonus QFF points you're likely to close the card anyway.

    • I'm in the same boat as you. Got rejected for the amex. Does this mean that the MC will still be free and accrue the bonus points then?

  • will this work with the referral deal from amex?
"You can receive 30,000 Membership Rewards points when you refer a friend by 15 August 2018 and your friend applies by 29 August 2018 using your link and is approved"

  • +5

"Apply online in 10 minutes and get a response in 60 seconds."

I hate that the response is ALWAYS 100% "we can't decide yet, we'll call you in a few days"

    (profanity).

  • can we use the mastercard and amex to pay for shire rate still count toward the $3000 eligible purchase?
I want to use use both card to pay for shire rate and insurance policy and also shopping to make it reach $3000 each easily within 90 days.
Also how do we know that we have reach the $3000 eligible purchase?
When do we receive the bonus 80k and 40k after we have made the eligible purchase? Thanks.

    • Instead of trying to get someone to spoon feed you. Try reading the T&Cs.

      • +2

It is abit unclear to me so I was asking for someone who have made the payment in the past deal and do actually get the QFF point. Thanks.

  • I applied for this card back in Jan on this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350966 and am yet to receive the points after eligible spend in the first month. Is anyone in a similar situation? I got my points off ANZ very easily but it just seems westpac give you the run around

  • Not eligible for this, this expires on the 5th of September and my 12 months will be up on the 7th of September.

  • +1

Got the 75+15 Westpac+Amex combo a couple of weeks ago, this deal is so much better!

  • +1

Deal is great. Just received my cards but Westpac card services call centre is below par.
    1. The welcome letter does not provide full terms and conditions without details on its first year annual fee waiver and its promo Qantas points bonus
    2. Operator on cards services call centre has little knowledge on this promo campaign and provided me with incorrect annual fee (was told $50 Qantas program fee is not waived until I tell them the promo code and 10 mins of call waiting)

Now with lack of details, I'm reluctant to activate my cards. Activation means accepting of terms and conditions of which I have no idea what they are.

    • Just got my approval email yesterday. Can I ask how many business days for you to receive the cards? Would also be interested to know if you end up having any more T&Cs conversations. I recently had to jump through hoops with CBA to get my sign-up bonus but it did happen so the result was satisfactory, just not the effort.

      • Plastics arrived within 3 days.
Still yet to walk into a Westpac branch. They'd better not hand me a phone when I'm there.

        • Were you already a Westpac customer?

Trying to register for online banking and it says I need to ring them which is going to be a PITA … I assume that because I do not have an everyday account with them (ie only these cards) that they may need to create a bank account to allow access to the internet banking platform.

Also, yes the email "We’re pleased to let you know your application has been approved and your new card(s) will arrive shortly." has at the bottom saying the annual fee is $250. Perhaps they are just stating the standard price. I am going to see if the fee is charged, and if it is, blast them later.

        • just received the card and have the same situation. How did you go? Did you end up with activation with a confirmation of the bonus points/annual fee waived?

        • @kickling:
Have you been able to register for an online account to manage your cards?

    • Promotion T&Cs are on the bargain link (scroll down to the bottom. Take a PDF before the promotion expires and you may be able to dispute and get the points, (try financial ombudsmen in case they try to do any hanky panky)…

  • +1

In just received the welcome email.

It states that the annual fee is $250 but they waived the $50 qantas membership fee.

I will have to wait until Monday to call Westpac up to clarify this crappy customer service out.

Has anyone got this clear with Westpac as of yet? That their system and customer service is horrible?

  • If you currently hold an AMEX issued card (e.g. Explorer), or have recently closed one, are you still eligible for the 40k bonus Qantas points after minimum spend? I read through the T&Cs, but didn't see any comments about AMEX eligibility - but am aware of other deals that had this condition.

    • If you currently hold an AMEX issued card (e.g. Explorer), or have recently closed one, are you still eligible for the 40k bonus Qantas points after minimum spend?

I would like to know that too… thinking of applying for this but not sure if I am eligible.

      • Didn't see anything in the T&Cs about current Amex holder being inegiable.

I'm currently serving my 18 month break from Amex with 2 months to go. Am I right in thinking that this is definitely a bank issued Amex and will not affect me when I apply for the next big 100k+ point deal with an Amex explorer?

        • Am I right in thinking that this is definitely a bank issued Amex

May be not, it looks like it is issued and serviced by Amex.

        • I couldn't see anything either - might bite the bullet and apply, but need to plan any big bills around it… :)

Although i think because this is a card issued directly by AMEX (with Westpac branding), that it will reset the 18 month counter. I wouldn't risk it, considering you've been waiting for 16 months already!

        • @awesomewilly:

Spoke to Amex. Was guaranteed that applying for this would not affect future promotions.

        • @raging:

Correction. Called Amex again to check when my 18 months were up. Ask the question again and was told that since the card was issued and services by Amex that it would indeed disqualify you from future Amex bonus points.

Glad I haven't pulled the trigger.

        • @raging: has anyone been able to confirm the same? im in the same boat.

        • @raging: I'd also like to confirm this - just finished up my 100K AMEX ultimate qantas or whatever its called and cancelled, so wouldn't take it if i'm not eligible and/or it resets my timer

        • @Kingfield: Any luck finding out the answer?

  • +2

Has anyone been successful in getting $0 annual fee after applying for just the Mastercard?

  • Has anyone been receiving the error about the pre-filled promo code (QBX12)? When I try to submit the application to go to the next page, it has an error saying invalid promo code. What have people done to successfully submit their applications? I can remove the code, but will that mean I don't get the Annual Fee waived?

    • That's weird, i just applied and submitted my application using the link in this deal a few hours ago. Nothing came up or any fields about promo codes or alike.

      • +1

its not weird. Promo code field comes when you do not complete the application in first go and open again later using your email.

In your case promo code was already added to that session, so you did not need to enter it and infact this is the recommended way to avoid issues like timmodd is having above

    • This happens when you do not complete the application in one go and restart the application using link in email.

I would suggest to start a new application to make sure you get the offer. Your application is not submitted yet, so there won't be any credit check

  • I've got 2 Amex cards (PE/ gold). Would I get approved for the Mastercard / rejected for the Amex? Guess I could cancel my Amex gold and get this (without bonus points) but at least get lounge access.

    • I have one Amex already (Explorer), and got approved for both Master and Amex.

I expect that I'll get both bonus points, but we'll see once I spend the money. :)

    • Did you get any further with this? I also have 2 Amex cards (PE + Explorer), I'd like to keep both of them. Would they happily accept this application as well? Can you have 3 Amex cards against your name?

  • Anyone know if I'll still get the bonus points for the AmEx card if I already have another card issued by AmEx?
Also has anyone tried doing the $0 annual fee offer through the branch? I wanted to give the branch the sale but they're saying they can't waive the AmEx annual fee because the card is from AmEx (they can waive the MasterCard annual fee).

  • +2

Received both cards and have made a few purchases with the Mastercard. Have checked online banking and no annual fee yet. T&Cs state the annual fee is "charged to your account following the first cash advance or credit purchase transaction". Looks good so far. So hopefully they have waived this fee and the T&Cs are incorrect.
