This deal has been popular before on Ozbargain but those codes have expired. Seller has provided a new code for 25% discount. Not sure how long it is valid for.

Make sure to select the "Free shipping" option that really provides free shipping (ie not the Amazon PRIME "free shipping", unless you're a PRIME member I guess).

The discount shows up as the sum of the rebated $5.99 shipping plus the 25% discount, $19.55, for a total discount of $25.54.

This torch (flashlight for USA-eans) fits 4 18650 lithium batteries, but apparently can run even on one. Four batteries is of course better. I think user should install protected batteries.

  • Can confirm that this torch is a beast

    • Definitely looks beasty.

  • 4 x 18650 lithium batteries ?

    Battery included?

    wow…

    • I wouldn't trust any 18650s that came included.

    • That is approximately up to 51.8 Watt-hours of energy with 4x 3500mAh batteries…

      A lightweight this aint.

      No batteries included…

      • -1

        So AA Lithium ion batteries?

        Can I use Eneloop?

        • AA-sized lithium batteries are 14500.

This torch requires 18650, so are larger than AA (18mm diameter, nominally 65mm long. 14500 are 14mm diameter and 50mm long).

    • Batteries not included.

  • Went to a friend home a few days ago and had a blackout he brought out something similar and it can light up the whole room like no blackout.

    5000 Lumen is a lot.

  • Any suggestions for excuses to give to the wife for purchasing this?

    • +3

Just get it first. It's easier to ask for forgiveness later.

    • +8

"oh this thing? I've had it for years, don't you remember?"
"it was on sale, how could I afford 'not' to get one"
"well you bought those shoes you don't really need"
      "sorry"
"i need it for work cough, it's tax deductable"
"i bought you an early birthday present, something we can both use"

    • +7

It's just for security honey! If anyone breaks in, first i'll blind them with 5000 lumens, and then i'll belt them over the head with it. It's because i love you babe! What's a lumen? It's a measure of my love babe!

      I'm here for you bro.

    • With those 4 large batteries inside, I'm sure it would vibrate like a wacker-packer ;)

    • +2

"Thank you, your order has been placed."

      It is done.

OzBargain is not good for my marriage.

    • +2

When she asks what this is, you can say 'flashlight? What flashlight? I thought i was buying a fleshlight'

I am sure that will improve your situation ;)

  • why is the flat top 1850 banned?

    • +1

These run on button tops. You could mod your flat tops if you wanted. I run mine on 4 Samsung 30Q button tops.

      • What mod will work? The standard mod of adding magnets to the top probably won't work with these, as you do up the case there is a wiping action at the top end of the batteries.

      • +1

It seems like it runs either on unprotected button tops or protected flat tops. Is that right?

        • I'm in the same boat as you… really not sure what this does or doesn't take but I just had a quick look at the BLF Review and it seems it really can only accept button tops otherwise they wont make contact with the flat conductor plate up inside the torch itself. Springs are down the bottom but it's flat up top so a protruding button on top of the cells will be needed to make contact. There's a pic & caption in that review proving that protected batteries fit fine too so I think as long as they're button-topped you'll be fine.

    • +1

Yeah i saw that too - the third image. I assume they just mean the 18650 flat-top is unsuitable for this torch, as folk are certainly selling them.

    • +2

Pretty sure that is because the flat tops don't (always) make contact. I think (from memory) it actually needs the raised top in the carrier.

  • Is it really possible to last 1500 hours?

    • +1

If I was 20 years younger

      • If so that is your last year ;)

    • On moonlight mode. would be very dim, but if you were stranded on an island, possibly.

  • +1

Thanks OzB and to the OP… I'm now on the slippery slope of torch & 18650 collecting, bah!

  • +3

Hey guys go buy the aldi USB power banks. They are $7 crack them open and you have a genuine Samsung 18650 cell.

    • Button top protected?

      • How do I tell?

      • +1

No they aren't. They do work in this torch though.

    • Really? thats awesome I will get one tomorrow. Where can I get a cheap charger? Also yeah I would like to know if they are protected.

      • +1

check out LiitoKala 402 - a great basic smart charger .. normally under 10 bucks
meaning it is not a timed charger - it wont overcharge your cells

        for example see previous deal:
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/381763

    • The Aldi 20V cordless tool batteries have ten 18650 Samsung cells for $39.99 or five for $29.99.

      • Button top or flat?

      • That is cheap! $3.90 each. Hard to get them out? Any breakdown instructions?

      • How many mAh?

      • +1

These will be flat cells, spot-welded together.

They will be 2AH each cell. (4.0AH battery pack, 20V nominal, really 18.5V for non-marketing humans, so 74WH. At 3.7V per cell and 10 cells, that is 2AH per cell).

Here is one breakdown of this type of battery:

        https://syonyk.blogspot.com/2016/09/dewalt-20v-max-30ah-batt…

But there are lots on the internet and maybe even one for the Aldi product. Take care with electronics…

        • The cells are marked Samsung INR18650-20Q

          https://lygte-info.dk/review/batteries2012/Samsung%20INR1865…

        • +1

Also might be worth noting that cells pulled from a pack are all unprotected.

        • @eug: Even protected cells can cause a fire if the internal safety switch fuses closed - it does happen.

        • @iratepirate: Sure… but even though people still die in accidents while wearing seat belts, it doesn't mean we shouldn't bother wearing seat belts. :)

I'm more interested in the protection they provide from over discharge.

        • @eug: It's true - I don't do a safety assessment before rolling out of bed in the morning (If I did I might ask for breakfast in bed :)).

Whilst I am quite happy to use unprotected cells, I wouldn't give them to my 70 year old mum to use.

      • Is it easy and safe for a novice to get these batteries from Aldi and open them up for use in the torch ??

    • Are these available now?

      • Depends on your local Aldi - I've picked up 10 cell packs for as little as $25 on managers specials.

  • +1

Cheers! Um-ed and rr-ed too long on the last deal and ended up missing it.

  • bought 1 last deal..

Excellent torch, but haven't really used it yet..

Also did the brass screw upgrade mentioned in the previous deal.. Not really sure if it made a difference but brass has 2 be better than the steel screws they come with for heat & current purposes…

    • Did you test it how long it can last?

      • I see you're quite keen to know the run time duration, see this listing on BG, it includes a run time chart.

1500 hours is at 2 lumens. 40 mins at 5000 lumens. And a gazillion others in between.

        • 1500 hours is at 2 lumens. 40 mins at 5000 lumens.

Thanks, just wondering how is it possible to have 1500 hours on 5000 lumens.

If it is possible we don't need to pay AGL.

  • +3

So if I get that rosegal charger I can use it alongside the batteries from Aldi for the torch? Is it hard to take out the batteries ? I have 0 knowledge

  • can someone point me in the right direction for the batteries

    • +1

This guy seems to have a clue.

  • Easily the best flashlight I have.

  • these do get hot very quickly so if holding it can become an issue.

  • Thanks op, awesome torch. Bought a second !

  • +1

These batteries look good. Not cheap, but no need for a charger: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Nitecore-18650-NL1834R-Mini-USB-…

    • Looks like a rebadged Fenix (or vise-versa). I recently got one of these: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-Fenix-ARB-L18-3500U-3500mAh-3… and charges nicely however I'm yet to get my first C8s to test it in so I'm not sure how good/bad it will be.

Keep in mind these are a good 3-5mm longer than a standard 18650 due to the built-in circuitry so may not work in everything.

    • … but four standard 18650s and a charger would be best for this torch as it's far more economic. The 18650s with built-in USB port are handy for single-cell devices.

      • +1

Yeah I need one for a single cell device. I might grab one of these. At least it is easy to charge, protected and 3400mah.

  • +1

Thanks brought one for my small backyard (450,000 metres)

  • Thanks, I also grabbed one. Can't wait to spotlight the fk outer trespassers

  • +1

My "Kuwait" just arrived. Whoa, lovely :) Currently running it with two LG HG2 flat-tops while I wait for my bulk Pana NCRs to arrive and it's working nicely as the HG2s tops just protrude enough to make a decent connection to the plate inside the top of the Q8 however it does mean the main body rubber seal gets squished too much and needs to be removed so yes, it works but button-tops are advised. My other 18650s are all DIY de-tabbed cells extracted from brand new ALDI Power Tool packs and their tops are far too low to work in the Q8… but they work perfectly in my C8s!

    Cheers OP! Torchy McTorch-Face :)

Received mine a few days ago and have had a chance to spend some time with it.

This is NOT a beginner's torch.

The User Interface is very complicated.

This REDDIT thread links to a Google DOC which I found to be easier to understand than the included instructions, but the document is still problematical:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/7caafq/blf_q8_c…

In short, the torch can be set to be used in one of two Modes - Ramping Mode or Modes Mode.

    • In Ramping Mode: hold the button longer, the brightness increases.
    • In Modes Mode, each button press goes to the next level of brightness (ie the next mode). However, there are 12 pre-set Modes to choose from. e.g. Mode Setting 1 has 2 modes - 10 Lumens and 5000 Lumens. e.g. Mode setting 6 has 6 evenly spaced brightness levels. e.g. Mode Setting 12 has 4 evenly spaced brightness levels.

The Torch comes default in Ramping Mode. To set it to use a (one of the) Modes Mode instead, need to enter the programming Mode and select which of the 12 Modes you want to have. This Mode Setting is then permanent until the torch configuration is changed.

This torch should come with a WARNING - it is fkn bright and you will cause temporary blindness if you turn it to 5,000 Lumens anywhere near yours or someone else's eyes.

Yeah if you point it to the ceiling it can bright up the whole room.

  • Bulk 18650 BORUIT 3.7V 4000mAh Rechargeable Lithium Battery Optional USB Charger

    4x 18650s with duo battery charger $27

    10x for $24.

Would this be suitable/decent/the right ones?

    • +1

      No.

The reputable brands for 18650 batteries claim no more than 3500mAh - Samsung, Panasonic, LG.

Anyone claiming more, at a much reduced price, is quite possibly selling fire sticks - you know, lithium batteries that start fires…
