People Selling Cheap iPhone 8 on Gumtree

Hi Folks,

I have just purchased a brand new Iphone8 from Gumtree yestreday and hold your breath i only paid $400. And person selling phone had another for sell as well. This is Unopened Iphone8 64GB. I have tried, tested phone and everything is fine and I have checked IMEI report as well which seems okay as well. Now I am just wondering how people can sell this phones cheap. So I would like to know if any of you had similar experince recently and is there other ways to confirm if your phone is genuine.

Edit: Other Iphone seems like gone and add has been disappeared from Gumtree so dont waste your time searching.

Body language champ. Sometimes you have to ask the question and catch them in a lie..

Hey, why are you selling this?

'Ohhh, ummm..ahhhh….' This is a redflag

Sure they could have a rehearsed line but my gut intuition usually smells bullshit if it is.

In other words there's 0 penalty in asking so why not do it mate.

  • Maybe you should sell it to someone else? Pocket the profit and buy yourself a new phone? Not worth the risk imho.

Why does everyone automatically think it HAS to be illegally obtained through fraud or theft.

Although it's uncommon, bargains are to be had sometimes…

Especially with phones as you are usually able to get two phones on a phone plan with very little credit, so it does not surprise me he has two, he probably used his credit and got them on a plan and just doesn't care…

  • What's the profile of the seller - age, appearance - and how was the house (well maintained, unkept, etc). Can learn a lot about the seller based on this info. But if I were you just keep using it until it dies/dropped/lost/blocked.

Mate, a rich guy who wanted to see this forum sold you the phone. He is probs admiring his or her handiwork right now.

  • to me… it could be a stolen phone from NZ??? or could be someone really just want to sell this unwanted phone for something, say $400. however i think it is more likely a dodgy way obtained new phone from NZ and sell in AU, so you will have nothing reported/blocked, it is pretty much "Clean" in AU.

Here is my experience from the other side of the deal.
I sold a brand new top if the range iPad after keeping it more than 6 months … a young student gave me her sad story and a lowball price… I thought ah Okie… you can have… all excited she arranged to meet in the cbd (yup even more doggies) as she got no car. We made the deal and I gave her a written receipt.
Later that afternoon she called back and wanted to return the iPad.. changes her mind. .. Okie no probs. I asked why, she said she talked with her friends and it is too cheap to be true…. she opened the box and don’t think it is real or brand new.. I told her I cannot take it back as it is now opened. Even after helping her to register it with Apple in the store and got a 12 months warranty, she still wants to take me to the police! And calling me a shitty person for taking advantage of young students. Yup… lesson learned… “don’t be a ‘too nice’ person on gumtree “.

Your $400 phone might just be doggies or again just enjoy the good deal you got. Happy end note. I did get an apology text from the student about a 6 months later.

Took me a moment to realize you weren't talking about canines

the word is dodgy not "doggies"

      • Seen heaps of what seems like Autocorrect issues around facebook etc. Usually words starting with D. Don't instead of do for example.

        • And Dick instead of Richard.

Half the messages on Gumtree are sob stories in an attempt to take advantage of the seller.

It's either stolen from a shop, or it was obtained on a fraudulent contract with stolen ID.

Stolen CC details. Need to flip quick.

  • i think its the one i lost on a bus to brisbane cbd.. may i have it back lol

  • Could be purchased from a phone plan and decided they didn't want the phone or just wanted the data?

  • They win it and make profit

Some years back when the Samsung galaxy S4 was new to market I purchased a sealed Telstra unit, from a guy on Gumtree for $350 (were selling for ~$700 in the shops). Never gave any issues and still have the phone around somewhere.

Not every seller on Gumtree is a crook (though there are some scoundrels there) and whilst there's always risks involved with buying items 2nd hand, be happy with what you have for now.

  • I won a brand new Ipad in 2015 and decided to keep it but, in theory, I could have sold it for a fraction of the new price though.

    • The question is why would you?

In this case, the genuine item would likely sell just as fast for $600 or $700 as it sounds like it did to the OP for $400. An iPhone 8 for $400 is very suspicious, since that is half or less than the going rate.

  • Let me guess, the seller said they lost their receipt?

    So either:

A.) Stolen CC and purchased iPhone
    B.) Stolen iPhone.

Good on you for supporting the black market

  • Shouldn't we wait for something to go wrong before worrying about it?

  • Money laundering…

  • People sign up to phone plan with iPhone.
Either with their ID or fake ID
Get 2 phones and never pay a bill.
    Sell phones for profit

  • Stolen

He was selling it at it's real price.

  • You've bought a phone someone ordered on a plan. Congratulations, will be IMEI blocked within the next few weeks once owner reports stolen or lost.

  • Stolen or fraud. My sister's ex use to sign up with plans under other people's names and sell the phone .

  • They might have aquired the phone for 'free' , ie it may have been a gift, or may have come free as part of their current phone plan.
Anything really really suspicious on Gumtree (or anywhere) , that seems stolen, then you should report it to police.
Eg, I noted that someone was selling something on gumtree, and when I asked where they got it from, their answer was basically "i don't know" . So I promptly forwarded all info to the police station in area where the gumtree listing was.
Do not support thieves, if nobody bought the stolen products, then much less would be stolen. I'm sure you don't want your sh*t stolen, so do the right thing.
