40% off Xbox Live Gold - $47.97 - Plus Two Free Arcade Games

420

Similar to this previous deal in September http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/31264 except this time you get a couple of free arcade games.

Note: Looks like the deal is for those who are currently silver xbox live members.

Featured games are:

The Maw
http://reviews.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/1645/The-Maw/p1/
http://au.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/themaw/review.html

and R Type Dimensions
http://au.xboxlive.ign.com/articles/951/951157p1.html

Cannot find another advertisement for this offer other than the Xbox dashboard itself so not sure when it began and when it ends. Terms say limited time.

And yes, there are other places online you can get it for a similar price such as:
Gamecard.com.au - $54 - http://gamecard.com.au/my/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=1&cat=X…
Discount gamer - $52 - http://discountgamer.com.au/games-details.php?num_gameid=101
CdDShareKey.com - $48 - http://cdkeyshere.com/xbox.html/xbox-live-12-month-gold-card…

One down side you will probably point out is the fact that you are automatically up for renewal once you sign up to this Microsoft offer so you will need to change your renewal or cancel before the membership ends.

So the offer is there, take it or leave it.

  • If you've still got a few months left on your subscription can you purchase this and have the one year from when your subscription expires or is it effective immediately??

    • Normally they are added on to existing subscriptions so I don't see why this would be any different.
There is probably a limit somewhere preventing you from applying say 5 of these though ( ie cards from wherever, not just this deal) in an effort to save the maximum amount of money based on the idea that price will probably increase over time.

  • i can't see this deal anywhere? I've got some crapola one for $67.90 a year.. where did you find this on the console?

  • +1

To prevent re-subscription in a year's time, you just need to remove your Credit Card details from your account at xbox.com.au
Great deal, except I already own "The Maw"

    • +3

Not quite true. You actually need to call Microsoft get them to remove the direct debit as you cannot remove your credit card off your account. You cannot do it through the console or the web (I have just gone through this process). It is annoying and takes a while.

      <mod> attached email from Microsoft

yeh that's correct, a couple of years ago u could cancel online, they have changed it back so you need to go through this ridiculously arduous process of talking to some american wanker who is deliberately troublesome in having such a simple request fulfilled. They definitely rely on the inertia factor that ppl wont be bothered to cancel it. It is prolly the most despicable thing about the xbox live service. Shameful really.

        • +2

Fillipino/a, such a waste of time, every time I take up one of these offers I have to get on the phone and remove the auto renew ripoff.

Microsoft you assholes put the cancel auto-renew back on the website!

    • Good suggestion but it wont work. Trust me, I tried it.

MS will bill you until you actually give notice of your intent to stop gold subscription. I removed my credit card details and it lapsed to silver membership on its own… but then 2 years later I wanted to 'sign up' to gold again on the same user name (achievements game saves etc), and then MS informed me that I had an outstanding balance on this user account that needed settling prior to giving me gold again!

Yep… they will hold your user name to ransom! Knowing full well that most people wont want to start up a new user name and lose all their saves and achievements.

I basically said to the yank on the phone this very thing, and "how it was unfair that you hold people to ransom like this"…. and he kept saying "well its in the terms and conditions".

      Just be careful folks.
Once you sign up to gold and then decide to cancel (and not pay), make sure of one of 3 things:

      a) you never intend to sign up to gold again… which I did- I told the guy NO WAY I'm paying for a service you didnt provide me…. you'll never get that money in a million years, keep me on silver and I'll make another user name for gold (which I never did anyway, MS isnt getting money for free from me!).

      b) if you want to sign up to gold again, be prepared to pay oustanding balances on old user name.
      c) if you want to sign up to gold again, be prepared to make a new user name.

JUST REMEMBER, IT WILL ALWAYS AUTOMATICALLY RESUBSCRIBE. ACTUALLY GIVE NOTICE TO CANCEL, DONT JUST REMOVE PAYMENT DETAILS, BECAUSE THE CLOCK KEEPS RUNNING. Sorry for caps, but MS will definitely try and do a number on you later if you arent careful.

      /Novel length rant over :).

can you provide some details on your setup to view this deal? ie, are u currently a gold member? your location settings are australia, etc? and can anyone else actually see this deal on their console?

    • Updated the post above. It will not appear for those with gold membership already. Yes I am in Aus. Pic is as shown in post below.

  • I assume it is only for xbox live free users. Shows up under spotlight in the menu. I'm currently on xbox live free.

OK, you can still use this offer even if you are currently a Gold Member.
My Gold subscription was due to expire in a few weeks, so I was on a hunt for a deal, and saw this here !
As expected, this offer did not appear on my dash. So I used the good old two controller trick.

You need two controllers (1st one could even be a guitar hero guitar). Have the 1st controller (not the main controller) logged into a spare Silver account (I have a few setup for local multiplayer gaming). You'll see the offer pop up on the Dash, so select it, so that it is shown on your screen. Have that still logged in, and use the 2nd controller (main controller) log into your Gold account. Even after you are logged in with the main Gold account, that offer will be still shown on the screen. Go and log out of the 1st controller with the Silver account. Even with your main Gold account the only one logged in, you'll still see the offer on screen. Continue on and renew - I just did this and it seems to have worked, my account details say 40% offer started 02/2011 and next renewal 03/2012 (because I had a few more week left on my Gold). I'll have to wait a few days and make sure that the correct amount was charged on my credit card, and now off to cancel the renewal on the website.

If you don't log out of the 1st controller (Silver account) the offer seems to get confused and try to make that account Gold, so PLEASE log out of the Silver account first, and keep your eyes on your avatar icon at the top of the window to make sure that you are extending the Gold account.

thanks for this, just doing it now and confirm it works. I wonder which email will receive the code to the free games, since two accounts are kinda used? As long as one of them receives it !

I am just waiting to see if they will have special deal on family pack.

  • Seriously, why only make it for silver members?
Why stop people who are already spending money on spending MORE money??

Unless…. Unless they realize that the people who have gold are willing to pay the full price already… Gah. Silly M$.

  • Or just buy a gold code from play-asia.com. I just signed up me, my niece and my nephew for $50each, gold membership, no automatic renewal.

    • did u get two free games?

      • Nope, but you also don't have to already be a silver member and automatically renew your sub. Pick your own deal I guess, but I don't like rolling contracts.

ETA - didn't see the post above about the Gold workaround. I still don't like auto-renews, so I am happy :)

      • -1

Two free games that no one really wanted. I'd rather spend a few more dollars on a card without the games, then have credit card details with MS and automatically be renewed in a years time when the price is like $80. You save a few dollars now and get a couple games for free now, but you'll be paying $80 when it renews in a years time. Sure you can cancel it, but just to save the hassle of calling them up and going through that arduous process, I'd rather stick to the $50 membership cards.

        • +2

          shrugs

          i want the games.

  • It says that you can use a prepaid card and still get the deal. I had one lying around from christmas and my gold expired last week. Luckily I never got around to renewing it as I've been helping the wife with a new baby..
I guess others could get a cheap price from the other places.

Signed, up used my prepaid card..absolutely no details provided from Microsoft on when you get the free games or how. Waiting for an email that hopefully includes the free game codes or I will be pissed.

BUT! At least I'm not on their auto renew system.

    • Be prepared to wait 6-8 weeks for the codes.

    • read the original post photo.. it says clearly the codes for the games will be emailed in 6-8 weeks. How about next time u read the actual deal before having a whine about how there are no details? lil miss whiney mcwhine

    • Yeah, 6-8 weeks for an email linking to the free games. I missed it too until I rechecked the screen shot from the OP.

On the subject of not being on automatic renewal, even though you didn't pay by CC, are you sure they aren't going to want to auto renew you and then hold you account to ransom when you do finally want to renew (see UFO's post above)? In your "My Account" does it say something like:
      Your Account Summary
      Gold – 40% off 12 Months
      Renewal Date: 5/02/2012
      Automatic Renewal: On ?
      Credit Card: …

      Just curious.

When you call up MS to cancel the supscription can what details do you have to provide them?

    • +1

      Once you're logged in: http://support.xbox.com/en-au/pages/call-us.aspx
      Phone Mon-Fri 7am-9pm: (02) 8031-8186 (if you are in Sydney) or 1800 555 741.

      • Know your: Gamertag and Windows Live ID.
      • Have the answer to the account's secret question or the last four digits of the payment option on file.
      • Have available the first and last name of the account holder.
      • Have available the telephone number or the billing address on the account.
      • Make sure you have set up your secret question on your Windows Live ID.
  • Montaigne83, yeah like whatever dude. Sorry I don't have a HD Tv that makes it easy to read tiny disclaimer text. It's even hard to read on my monitor from that screenshot…

I didn't think it was TOO much of an ask for the details to be emailed to me after I signed up.

Grazer if they don't have your credit card info then they can't auto renew you. That's the beauty of using prepaid cards. I've been doing it this way since I got my xbox. At the end of the year I get a 1 month warning email from Microsoft and then they kill my gold account. When I log back into live it says "gold expired do I want to renew?", at which point I need to pony up a credit card and then it will continue to autorenew, or go prepaid and it doesn't auto renew.

I do the same thing with itunes. Also means if someone steals your account info they can't use your credit card. The minor inconvenience tracking down cheap prepaid cards online from time to time.. is better than living with the credit card spectre IMHO.

So why are people buying into this deal, why do people pay for online at all? It costs more than 3 budget games a year and isn't tangible. Imagine the billions Microsoft are making for such a simple service.

PS3's online is free, it's there forever and their is no need to pay $60 a year to access multi-player functionality.

PS3 is now quite competitive priced with lots of great deals recently. Specs are much better than 360.

Cannot be bothered going into detail but if your going to get a couple of years online PS3 will get you further cheaper.

    • "PS3’s online is free, it’s there forever"

      err.. what?

everybody knows PS3 is going to be charged soon too, it isn't "forever" free, dunno where u got that from..

plus ps3 games are more expensive than xbox because publishers make up the money that is otherwise accounted for in the gold subscription..

it isn't like u are saying comrade..

“PS3’s online is free, it’s there forever”
        Nothing is forever, nothing.

          What about Duke Nukem Forever?

        • -1

          well didn't quite mean forever.
Sony is only planning on charging for a premium service online gaming will remain free.

          SOURCE: http://www.afterdawn.com/news/article.cfm/2009/11/23/sony_co…

and most talk about it was from 2009, were in 2011 and so far no changes have been made with no new official discussion since early 2010.

Also note that at least half xbox online services are Peer 2 Peer Based. Changing for such a service is Criminal.

While some are dedicated because EA and a few other companies run their own servers. Which I think don't require xbox gold account.

          http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=40945
(PS3 seems the same a bit of both)

Then we go onto PC's much more expensive to run but some great games I have almost 10 years old, online functionality still works great. Just takes forever to find another play but when one comes online it's great. Obviously using P2P.

P2P and dedicated both have their pro's and cons.

Also at least when a PS3 game costs more, it's tangible. You keep the physical game which physically has online available. If it's P2P it'll be available FOREVER. (no doubt) if it's dedicated (well of course servers have to come down sometime).

I just cannot justify why Microsoft charging up to $70 a year. Not per console BUT per gamer profile :o. If you have a family of people who want to play online expect to pay hundreds. This is seriously a cash-in.

I know Microsoft won't be getting a cent from me.

        • -1

duke nukem forever - forever waiting for a release date

          lol

  • What if I put my account age at 25 but I'm only 16? Should I say my Mum's name as the account holder and change all the info on Xbox.com, since I would be using her CC anyway?
Or just stick to cdkeyshare and forget about the free games?

    • I would get the codes from play-asia so mum doesn't get a nice little surprise bill in 1 years time when you forget to ring up Microsoft before your time is up to cancel :)

It's only polite not to sign rolling contracts with other peoples credit cards!
