damn i bought this screen only a couple of months ago in the previous obz post, for roughly 1.1 this is an awesome price for this screen.

$120 difference over a couple of months isn't bad, you would have got a lot of enjoyment from it so far :)

  • How is Acer compared to the Asus ROG line?

    • Very very similar. Exactly the same panel. Your really only getting a different stand etc. Both have there issues with quality control

  • I have the 27" 144hz version. These screens are very high quality, almost frameless and perform beautifully. Had mine for 2 years now so there's no issues with reliability either. I won't be changing screens until OLED/4K/HDR becomes available.

I have a house auction to attend tomorrow. My maximum bid just decreased by $979.
Thanks OP… Not from my wife… Just from me.

  • I've never used a more expensive monitor than my Samsung. What does paying 3x the price get you?
Genuinely curious, maybe I don't know what I'm missing out on

Fully sick LED lights and edgy logos and symbols and a l33t stand so you look like a TRUE gamer.

-High refresh rate 100Hz over the standard 60hz is good for FPS gaming, and according to many reports makes a very noticable difference making the experience buttery smooth. However is believed to have diminishing returns, so the change from 60-100 is more noticable than the change from 100-144 for example, and much more noticeable than 144-200. Though 120-144 is considered the sweet spot.

-Resolution 1440p over 1080p, greater pixel density and more screen real estate has its advantages. 4K is the holy grail, but nothing is powerful enough to run it at high refresh rates yet.

-Size and form factor - the 34" curved display adds to the feeling of immersion in games. The slight curve reduces the need to actually turn your head to see the edges of the screen. Ultrawide resolution actually lets you see more field of view in some games giving a competitive advantage.

-Panel - IPS over TN or VA gives better colours, brightness and viewing angle

-Gsync - still dont know exactly what this does, apparently reduces screen tearing and stutter, particularly helpful at lower fps. Yet to experience it for myself.

But these are the features you are paying for over a cheaper model. Most cheaper models compromise on one or more features, this is one of the very few that (almost) has it all. The newer model x34P goes up to 120Hz, and is around $1300 and they are just now releasing models that go even higher but they are priced/will be priced well over $2000

  • Is there a FreeSync version of this monitor?

    • NOt yet, but it looks like the new nvidia cards will be supporting the standardised adaptive sync(freesync).

  • Absolute bargain bought one about 2 months ago at what I thought was the best price to date ~ $1100. Loved the monitor, probably the best monitor on the market, until the microsoft windows spring update (build 1803) - GSync is broken now in window mode. - https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1045242/geforce-dri…

  • I really want one of these, but I'm so torn. I have recently built a good system (i5 8600k, gtx 1080, 16gb ram), but it is all paired to an ancient monitor (ASUS VE278Q, 60hz, 1920x1080).

My worry is that I don't upgrade my computer often - probably every 5 years (subject to how it is performing in games) - and so I worry about how I will power 3440x1440 with just a gtx 1080. Likely ok for now, but it will no doubt become problematic for AAA games within a year or two.

I really like the idea of ultrawide for both gaming and general web browsing, work, etc., but from a gaming perspective I recognise that a good 27" monitor (2560x1440 - not 4k) makes more sense in terms of my GPU being adequate for a longer period of time.

The real problem I see is that even the good 27" monitors (e.g. ACER XB271HU) are up around the $800 mark anyway. At that price, it seems a no brainer to pay an extra $150-$200 and go for the 34" X34. While I'll no doubt appreciate an upgrade from 60hz with the XB271HU, I just don't think I'm going to be that excited by a monitor which is the same size as my current monitor (and nor do I need 144hz). I feel like it is a hell of a lot of money to not even increase screen size! Ideally, this monitor would last me 5-10 years and so I want to get something good (largely without compromises), and I feel like if I went with a 27" monitor size is something I'd want to upgrade sooner rather than later.

With all that said, how do people power these things? Are people basically laying out $600-$1k on new GPUs every 1-2 years to run games on them at reasonable FPS?!

I learnt something 20 years ago. Buy the best monitor you can. It will probably stay with you for the next 3 builds.

Might not pair up perfectly with the 1080 today, but you can bet it will in the next build.

    • +2

G-Sync helps offset that considerably due to making lower FPS feel smoother and no tearing/stutter. Also, don't get too caught up in running everything at Ultra. In a lot of situations, higher resolution/frame rate make a bigger visual difference than high/ultra settings.

      • Thanks for the feedback sabaramo and leeson865!

Is there any reason you couldn't run games at 2560x1440 (or even 2560x1080 to maintain the 21:9 aspect ratio) to reduce the GPU strain? Obviously, you wouldn't want to stretch the image but presumably you could run the game with black pillars? Would this negatively affect the image quality?

        • +1

No it won't affect it. But each game will deal with it differently. My son runs his x34 with 1080ti @ 1080p for overwatch. Black bars but works well.

    • +1

As a fellow Ozbargainer, I likely don't need to mention this, but there's always another deal on the horizon with a 1080 TI. Just saying… It's not about need, it's the want that'll git ya!

  • Well that sold out faster than I expected. I guess I won't be buying one after all, haha.

Edit: Still in stock here for $20 more.
