Can’t you just buy a generic USB-C cable and use a standard USB plug instead?

    • +1

To charge the device, yes, but you need the AC adapter to run it in docked mode.
There may be alternatives now, i'm not sure, but nintendo's is the safest bet what with cheap USB C cables frying a range of devices.

    • +6

Theoretically you could, but if the AC Adapter isn't USB-C PD it would take much longer to charge the Nintendo Switch.

If you're playing games such as Zelda: Breath of the Wild (which can be resource intensive) while charging, a standard charger won't charge fast enough.

Also, with all the reports of bricking devices using third party accessories, I personally prefer the official option.

Here's more information regarding AC Adapter for the Nintendo Switch

Most regular USB (USB-A) can only charge the Switch at 7.5W, regardless of being rated higher (SOME can charge the Switch at 10W apparently, but rare).

For reference, maximum battery drain on the Switch is about 8.5W. So the battery can still drain if using USB-A to USB-C cable.

      For comparison:
-USB-C (5V/3A) will charge the Switch at 10W
-USB-C PD will charge the Switch at 18W
-USB-C PD (39W+) with 15V profile (15V/2.6A) is required to power the dock

thanks… came for snipperclips, bought snipper plus power supply plus charging joycon controllor plus sims 4 expansion.. sigh

  • Can anyone recommend a good power bank for the Switch?

      A comprehensive and easy-to-use guide — https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/6jnkl4/list…

EDIT: This also answers the first replier's question re: USB-C cables in a comprehensive manner. It's worth a read. Incidentally, it helped me understand why I should never ever buy cheap cables again (for my iPhones and other gadgets), and why "Wattage output"(Volts x Amp) matters in a charging device. To paraphrase the second replier in this post, if your wattage output isn't high enough, for e.g. when you play a game like Zelda which requires high power consumption, even if it's a wall charger with a USB-C cable, it cannot charge your Switch 'fast enough' to keep up with gameplay (but it can slow down your battery drain), to put it in simple terms.

      • Thanks for the analysis.

Thanks OP. This is a really good charger for your money's worth. And I've been wanting to get Snippers, and getting an extra charger (which is what I've been wanting as well!) for FREE…now that's an OZbargain! :)

        • @sujiferro: Enjoy. I picked up 2x Charger myself with additional items to I could take advantage of the AMAZON20.

    • Just note that your options for Power Bank that are good for the Nintendo Switch are limited in Australia, as most oversea companies refuse to ship to Australia.

The best power bank in my opinion would be the Anker Powercore+ PD which is over $150 AUD and difficult to find in Australia/doesn't ship to Australia.

I ended up getting the ZMI10 15,000mAh power bank from Banggood for ~$57 AUD.

Nice! I got this exact combo for $44, Snipperclips has dropped in price.

    • At the start of the promotion, it was listed for $35, then went out of stock and came back at $44. Now restocked at $35 again.

      • +1

Oh wow! I was just happy to get it.
They actually stuffed up my order so I ended up with 2xAC chargers and 2xSnipperclips. For $44
        So not complaining anyway!

Looks like out of stock for the charger. Goes to catch group.

    • Appears to be out of stock on the chargers.

    • Great as a spare and also does USB-C PD Charging

Not really. I would be cautious about this. The official Switch charger only supports 5V/1.5A and 15V/2.6A, so if your PD device doesn't use the 15V profile, at best it will not charge. (At worst you might damage something.)

I would not suggest using this to charge anything else aside from the Switch (directly, or through the dock).

Thanks for the information, I'll remove that comment once I'm able to.

The post-link above does state that Switch charger is not recommended for other devices based on your point.
      1. Most new devices have in-built voltage regulation, which will protect against over-drawing from a charger such as Switch.
      2. "At worst you might damage something", I agree with you on this - better safe than sorry.
      3. Sorry to sound like a broken record, but if you read the link above which I posted, cheap cables (which are more commonplace) does more potential harm than the actual wall charger (e.g. Nintendo Switch) itself. A Google engineer has proven this — https://www.engadget.com/2016/02/03/benson-leung-chromebook-…

I'd be more cautious of buying cheap cables from sites like eBay/Amazon, than say using an official Switch charger to charge my devices. That being said, I agree with your caution.

P.S. For further reading of USB-C cable reviews, you can check out the engineer's site — https://bensonapproved.com

      • Yes, I know all about Benson and the crusade against dodgy legacy cables.

(Not relevant to my comment on the hard-wired AC charger though!) ;)

    • ahh I bought a second charger and the joycon handheld charger adapter thinking I could connect the second charger to the joycon charger while I'm playing docked? Should it work with the official Nintendo handheld joycon adapter ok? cheers.

  • no more power sadness

  • Switch deal @ $29.99 gone, now $37.49

I got snipperclips + charge Grip for 35,
Chucked in Dragon Quest Builder and Amazon20 to get the game for $36.

These switch deals are hurting, but distracting me from the fact that I'm a soon to be 30yr old mum who asked for a Nintendo for her bday.
