Why Purchase an Expensive Phone?

For me, I only need the cheapest possible phone, with acceptable battery life, think Nokia, something like a banged up 3310 or 8310.

I sometimes wonder why people spend $1700+ for an iPhone, sometimes more if they buy a reliable case or a $100 tempered glass screen protector from Harvey Norman, and if they are a noob a 2 year extended warranty for $200 (even though the Australian consumer act covers most electronics for 2 years).

What are your thoughts?

  • I won't buy a phone until my current one dies. Bought the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL within a week, it was released. I should've bought a budget gaming pc for that money. Lesson learnt

  • These type of posts never do anything as noone will wake up tmrw and dump their iphone and suddenly aspire to buy the next $200 android.

1-2 hrs a day on your phone for most people, justifies that premium. Still using an Iphone 6 from launch, but wouldnt hesitate buying the 8 or X when this dies or becomes IOS obsolete.

for many reasons but essentially Because i don't use it as primarily as a phone.

When i am in transit i use it for YouTube or music.

When I'm waiting for extended periods of time i use it to play games or browse the internet to pass the time.

When I want to buy something i use my phone to check bank balances, when i feel like I've been over spending i check on my phone

When I see something worthwhile i take a picture to capture the moment

Lastly i also Use my phone to message people via the texting and also other apps and also to make calls.

TL:DR I use my expensive phone for work emails, internet banking, budgeting, gaming, youtube, browsing the internet, music ect.

So for me it was worth paying a little bit extra to get something that had decent storage while also having a good camera and nice big screen with good color and great battery life.

I think the real question should be why do people buy $1700 phone when they can buy $200 phone that does the same job. Same as:

Why do people buy fancy car
Why do people buy specific branded clothing

    Here are some reasons:

To belong, be as the crowd. (be like us and be accepted).
False belief that said item is needed, it's better does things faster.
Show off to friends and help improve a lack of self worth.
To not be ridiculed by peers for not having the latest greatest thing.

    Sad really..

    • Pretty much spot on. Also one of the few "luxury" items a lot of people are able to own.

    • Exactly, its more about the social aspect of fitting in and feeling that one belongs. It's sad really but come to think of it humans have and always will be materialistic beings.

Some people want a Merc, others are happy with a Toyota. Both will do the same job pretty well. The difference with other what you might call luxury items is it usually depends on your personal wealth as to whether you can access them.

Almost anyone can get an expensive phone on a plan, you don't need to be wealthy, just have an income. Most people don't need all those features, and the "status" it brings matters more to some than others, although any status is vastly reduced by the fact that owning high end phones is far from exclusive.

Personally I couldn't care less and have used perfectly adequate phones at a fraction of the price (Xiaomi) for the least few years. My wife and daughter have iphones and I don't see anything in them that would make me want to get one.

  • It’s my tool for work same as my laptop. Never ever get yourself cheap tools for work as they would screw you one day

  • Because it's an all in one.

Have a larger phone, make calls, watch videos, listen to music, quick and fast reliable wireless internet compared to our "nbn".

Now the app stores are enormous, ots of features, if you want to keep on your cheap phone, by all means go for it, but then you're most likely looking at other devices for other tasks.

Who needs a tablet when you have a phablet.

  • Why people buy expensive cloth?
    Somebody says quality.
Please see, most women spend a lot of money on party clothes that they wear only once. Does quality really matter?
People spend a lot of money on the phone for the extra functions, but at least 70% of the functions they paid for no use.
Because we are living in a world of success oriented. Most of us bow our heads to someone with a fancy car or have a lot of money.

I spent a lot of my time naked in the jungle because in the jungle if you wear a tuxedo, it's not just uncomfortable but nobody to impress.
Basically, you buy anything more expensive not because you need it but just to impress somebody. At home, I want to put a nail to my wall so I can hang a picture frame. Should I buy a $100 hammer or a $10 hammer?

That is a very cynical way of putting it. I think the question would be… do you buy a picture frame at all?

Why put a nail in? Nails cost money.

Why not just hold it up against the wall whenever you want to look at it? Or even better, commit it to memory, that's cheaper. Doesn't even need a camera or photo printer.

Q : why purchase an expensive phone ?
    A : Because I can afford it.

    • +2

This made me lol. The value ascribed to something is completely subjective when it comes to something as frequently used as a phone. For some people, it is their most used electronic device, for others, its just something to use for calling and texting.

Sometimes I picture the more rabid frugal OzBers as living in "mud" huts fashioned after their own feces, sifting through industrial bins to get sustenance, drinking bin juice for hydration and hunting in packs. Like some post-apocalyptic tribe of Bear Grylls (Gryllses? Gryllsii?).

      Case in point: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/385804

So… much… drama over something that costs a few dollars a month at best.

  • i sometimes wonder, why people are poor. then i realise those people are stupid. those same people think people who work hard, play hard, are silly for spending so much. perhaps i should start a thread on ozbargain…

  • Seriously….
    What have I started!

Smartphones are used so extensively nowadays so it makes sense to buy a high quality one. With that said I don't personally feel the need to buy a phone that costs more than $300. Lower to mid end phones still pack more than enough performance, decent camera and great battery life. I don't feel you're getting a lesser experience getting a cheaper phone except for perhaps the the camera quality but even then most mid-tier phones have good cameras in them. Performance is nearly completely wasted on high end models because most apps are made to run on nearly every modern phone. I think it comes down to whether you can afford an expensive phone or not. If you're using it every day then why not? For me, I'm happy with a cheaper lower end phone that meets all my needs.

  • Need a good Camera for dem D-i-C pics you know?

  • People who don't give a stuff about apps and that use Windows Mobile.

  • My phone isn't something I use every now and then and put away when I'm not using it. I have to carry it around with me 24/7 so it has to be something I like, something I find useful and something I find aesthetically pleasing.

It's up to each individual - as long as someone one can afford it, then it's up to them.

The other item that fits into the above category of personal items is a wallet. Not only do I want it to be functional, I want it to look nice as well, so I'm willing to spend big on that too. Again, personal taste.

  • i think for some it's more of a 'status symbol'

  • Is this a troll thread?

  • because it is necessity for today's lifestyle :)

but i myself still use an old Galaxy S7. does the things i need done.

  • Unfortunately I prefer the look of the photos taken with the iPhone.

The Chinese phones are all beautified and the Korean phones are similar though not quite as bad. I switched to a Huawei Mate 10 Pro from iPhone 6 last year which received a 97 for the camera from DXO website and thought I'd get a decent camera, but even with beautified mode off, the software inside still insists on beautifying faces.

So back to iPhone I go. Maybe I'll get an 8 Plus to save money later this year, but will have to see what the prices are like. Certainly don't want to spend $1500 or anything like that on a phone. But $1000 would be ok.

  • What's the best bang for the buck for about 200-250 dollars?

  • I touch and look at my phone more often than I do with my wife, yet I’ll soebd thousands on her without a problem. $1500 for a great phone you’ll be looking at all day every day for two years isn’t so bad. Plus you can gift it to your lovely wife when you upgrade two years later anyway.

  • I am a Breakfast Radio Announcer and for one I use my phone for so many different work-related things that it makes sense for me to buy top of the range, for starters I could not do what I do on a shitty old phone, on an older version iPhone things would be much slower, videos would be harder to edit and the quality of the photos not as good the further you go back. And then there is the big tax write off not too upset about that either.

  • I don't understand why people buy an iphone6 then upgrade to a 7 then upgrade to the X… to me, all phones manufactured since say 2015 could easily be sold as new today and perfectly usable. There is hardly any difference between my s7 and a new s9 for example except a slightly better camera.

    Calendar function! x10
Internet etc on public transport and PTV app
    Expensive phone faster processing speed
    Tether sometimes
Using it for my Foxtel Now trial atm with Chromecast
Take photos post online, expensive phones have good camera
…basically couldn't live without it now.

  • Functionality.
The $200 phones can't do half of what the high end phones can do.

Speed is important too. In some instances I don't want to be caught up on my phone for any longer than I need to.

    • Expensive phones take high quality photos (even in low light)
Having a large storage for lots of movies, etc
Buy locally, get better warranty, support
