If you install it yourself, itchy as f***. Better get some other clown to do it.

      • I've heard that this glasswool isn't itchy like other insulation can be.

      • I put glasswool in an old house a few weeks back. Not itchy at all.

    • What are you comparing it to if the house is new?

      • +1

        The street

      • +2

        Revs

        • Haha, thanks for that. :)

  • What is the difference between R2.0 and R2.5 and R2.7 and R6.0?

  • I wish I put this in my theatre while building my house. Now it's just impossible.. Shame

    • +1

Everything's possible, a bit of elbow grease and a hammer, you can take that plaster out in a jiffy.

  • Was going to say, how easy is it to retrofit this stuff into an existing house (while you still live in it)?

    • +4

You'd have to remove all/most of the plasterboard.

      • There are companies who offer this service, you basically move out for a couple of days, and they remove your plasterboard, add the insulation, and then re-board and re-plaster the walls. It's a straightforward process.

    • -4

It's easy if you know how.

    • It's not. You'll have to look into blow-in insulation.

      • See above.
You can absolutely retrofit, but you'll need the services of a plasterer to do so !

Thanks, bought 7 as part of bathroom renovation from Bayswater in VIC. Still many left there but not in other bunnings.

  • How is this better than some of the cheaper insulation you can buy?

    • From what I understand the R value is basically the only thing that matters in terms of effectiveness of insulation. Then the other difference is ease of installation - I've heard that this is less irritating for example.

  • If I mainly want acoustic insulation (not thermal) in the ceiling which is better, these acoustic wall batts or regular ceiling insulation?

    • +1

The density of these batts are roughly 27kg/m3 compared to regular batts at around 14kg/m3. For an acoustic barrier in walls, the higher density the better - so these acoustic versions are better. These acoustic batts also work well inside a room in a bass trap - but that is a much bigger discussion!

  • What's the best way to work out how much you will need?

  • Lots of mention of ceiling but what about wooden floor insulation?

    • Check out the site I've quoted above. It makes suggestions regarding floor insulation.
