  • Pulled the trigger on this using points.

The sound quality is very good - no I haven't done a one to one comparison with the Bose which are twice the price. I like that on my iPad I can adjust the sound quality for videos using the Sony app. (iPads/iPhones only have an EQ for music - not video)

I don't know how they'd go wearing them for 6 hours on a plane etc, but for short periods they are comfortable. (think they are the same weight as the Bose QC35)

One key advantage over some others is they can also work with a cord (detachable)to save battery life or if the battery has run out.

There is a more expensive (better?) Sony model, but there have been issues with breakage on the hinges used to fold that headset up. Haven't found any similar complaints about this model and it seems fairly robust.

    • I don't have this model or know whether it is a good price, but it looks almost identical to the model I have - hope my experience helps someone :)

This appears to be a successor to the ZX770-BN. I paid $99NZD for them when I lived in NZ but they had a rrp of $299 AUD out here. Mine broke at the pivot/swivel for one of the earcups (where they rotate to fold flat) a few months outside warranty. The joint is just plastic and to be fair they were abused a bit (wore them at the gym, often fell off my head during squats/bench onto the floor). Took them to the store I bought them from to be assessed for repair and sony gave me a brand new pair next day!

In terms of the performance - sound and noise cancelling good (no idea how it compares to bose, NC likely not as good) for patterned noise (ie construction, bus/train/plane noise) - awful for wind noise as it confuses the system. In built rechargeable battery with lots of run time, nfc pairing, bluetooth range good. NC can be used in bluetooth and wired mode, can also be used with the 3.5mm cable included when battery is completely dead so you aren't stuck with nothing if you remember to bring the cable (a lot of headsets don't do this and are about as useful as a glass hammer when battery dead). Call quality through bluetooth is good, Headset is light and comfortable for me on flights (and i have a large head). My model also came with a cloth bag (bit crap tbh) and an airline adaptor.

      • Can confirm everything Wilburre said. Got mine for a bit over $100 with the MDR-ZX220BT thrown in as a bonus, so a cracking deal. Very comfortable (my head is smaller), good Bluetooth range, decent NC. I use these for all long haul flights and often sleep wearing them, they're that comfy. Keep mine in a hard case as the provided bag offers little protection. Not concerned about the plastic hinges as I don't abuse them.

  • does this have any metal hinges? great deal but wont be buying any sony headphones anymore unless they have metal hinges.

    • Mine looks all plastic to me but only swivels through one plane. The more complex ones that fold in two directions to make them smaller have more of a tendency to break.

The only metal ones I have seen are the old Sennheisers I used to use when I worked in the radio industry - and they were not HiFi - but they were tough.

      • If I had to make an educated guess I'd say plastic - similar Sony models use plastic. Need to be careful.

  • This is a good deal but I am still holding out for the 1000XM2 in hope Qantas will get more stock before 30 June. May pull the trigger on 30 June if cannot get the 1000XM2.

    • Why not gt the PXC550 for $250?

      • Own the PXC550 already but prefer the 1000XM2's sound and noise cancelling.

I was considering the B&W PX but most review says the noise cancelling is not as good as the 1000XM2.
