  • When do we need to connect by?

    • Just had a chat with their web chat. They're saying 30 days to activate.

      • yep updated deal to reflect this from Ts&Cs document.

      • Cheers

  • +1

Darn it. Just got the $15 deal for 3 months… If I'd known and was tighter… Still happy though.

    • Three months works out better. The $1 deal is only 30 days.

      • +1

        Well technically that's $5 a month so doesn't work out better :-)
I guess it depends if you keep tightassing by moving every month to get the cheapest deal!

        • At the moment there are fewer and fewer $1 prepaid starter pack. Not like back then.

        • +6

I think 3 months of breathing room to not port every month is worth it haha. In my experience sometimes you go without service for half a day to a day while the port happens. Sometimes its within the hour - depends on day of week and who you are leaving and joining.

        • Better over 3 months if you recharge @ $35 and don’t want to keep chasing every new deal every month.

        • @Wilburre: totally agree. I went 1 day without service when porting over to prepaid Telstra.

  • Nice. Activating my 2nd free mynetfone sim soon and followed by this. Then you also get a free heyyou coffee, free uber ride etc using the disposable number.

    Dual sim phones are awesome.

Main number is on a $10 plan and been using second sim for data

    • I've been bouncing around between Optus/Lebara/Kogan/Vodaphone - never paid more than $10-15 for 15gb of data for 6 months now. Quad band phones are awesome.

      • Noice . Last 3 month haven't paid more than $11 for 2 Sims haha

      • Is it possible to keep doing this without hitting the government 5 sim or whatever the limit is?

        • +2

My interpretation of that rule is that if you keep porting your number in and out (and not activating the number they give you with the sim), you technically don't have more than 5 numbers in your name. IMO the active numbers is what they care about, not sims. I cut the sim cards and bin them once I've ported out.

Someone please advise if i'm incorrect.

        • nope, not when you are porting your number.

        • Is it for real? I know someone who has more than 10 under her name.

        • @andylch:
What about only activiating 4 at a time and letting them lapse? What do they count as?

        • @leeroys_dad: I'd say if they "lapse" i.e. the provider cancels your account due to inactivity for several months etc. they would no longer count to the 5 as they are not "active prepaid services in your name".

        • +2

It may not even be a "limit" - this piece of legislation states a higher proof of ID requirement if the person has more than 5.

        • +1

          @Wilburre:
i must have 20 sims activated with different numbers never had hassles.

        • @Wilburre: I didn't read the legislation, but what you suggested "may" be the case, is what I have experienced.
I recently went to activate an additional sim/number with network I am already with for a long time, the person on phone was confused because it was asking for licence number etc (which is not usually required for existing customer, just activating an additional service.
Anyway, they put my license in, and it was fine.
Also, I have purchased more than 5 simcards at a time, and there is just an additional form to fill out (ID verification step).
Should be no issues with activating as many services as you like, just they might ask for your license number again, even though you are already a customer registered with them.

    But I'll bet there's a … Catch.

    • +1

There is always a … Catch.

  • Just note they take $2 for this not $1. Apparently $1 is the cost for the SIM and the other $1 is pre-authorization.

    • But they return later on

  • +5

we can expect Kogan to step up and save us from having to use Optus

    • +3

I'm on optus right now and reception is shocking in canberra compared to vodaphone which is as good as or better than telstra.

Just a heads up that there were 3 people in the last deal that reported getting their numbers stuck in limbo for several days with Catch Connect: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/378612?page=1#comment (users: Javid, vikme, and Agret). The price and features are fine, but this just makes me very hesitant to use this on my main voice number. Furthermore, 2 of the slower ports I ever had were to Ovo and Amaysim (28 hours and 9 hours to port respectively, both also Optus resellers, same as this), so yeah, just be aware of this potential catch of slow port times or port limbo.

    • when i switched between 2 optus providers it took a week i had no active number for 4 of those days i wont swap between optus providers again.

      • +3

Porting within the same network is a manual process, and typically takes ~3 days. So avoid doing that. You want to port between networks, if you do that it should take around 25 mins typically if everything is working as it should.

The concern is that Catch Connect had these problems even when people were avoiding this (the first 2 users were coming from Telstra, so different network and still had multi-day delays, and the last user was ported many days before the SIM even arrived in the mail).

Also note that another user below, Bullion78, also reported a 2 day porting limbo. So that's now 4 separate people reporting problems with porting with Catch Connect. Obviously it works fine for some people too, it's a risk to be aware of.

        • Just received the 3 month 45gig sim im just after the data so i will get a new number about my 21st i think lol.

        • +1

For me, it was the quickest port I've ever had. I had a day left with Kogan and about 5GB left when I initiated the port. Intended to download the latest Windows ISO with the remaining 5GB. However, within about 15-30 minutes my Kogan SIM said invalid and, sure enough, I put the catch SIM in and discovered the port had already occurred! I must've timed it perfectly (was last Friday at just after 9am).

        • +1

I ported yesterday (Saturday) from Kogan to Lebara (both Voda). I requested port at 6.55am and was stunned when port was completed at 7.08am. I didn't think they even started manual ports until 8am.

        • +1

          @SydneySwan:

I started my port around 0950. Port finished at 1012. Very fast port to Catch from Vodafone :)

One thing to note is that the number did port through, deactivating the Vodafone SIM, however it took a good 10 minutes to register properly so I could use the data.

        • @StrayfireX: I did the same as you today. However, after porting from Vodafone,I am stuck in using their service. When I try calling out,it says I do not have enough credits to do so.Obviously,no data as well.I can only receive calls and message today.Online chat Rep says I am still in the process of activating.

        • @Neoika:

I thought something was wrong with my phone, but it took 10 minutes after the port for me to get data.

I got a text for voicemail first that said my voicemail was active. I had a signal on the SIM but no data. It wasn't until the "your number has successfully been ported text" does the data start working. I imagine Catch's process must put your number into some sort of state of limbo. Very concerning.

What I did about it: I tried a speedtest, didn't work. Got the voicemail txt. I rebooted, nothing, I tried to force the phone to work on 3G for a few minutes nothing happened, then rebooted, then forced LTE/4G then rebooted and it worked (somehow) and I got the activated text.

I had to frantically refresh catch connect's user page. It literally asked me to register my SIM for the first time (again) when I clicked on it. Super sketchy.

From the sounds of it, I think I lucked out of a whirlwind of troubles. I think I might avoid Catch in the future.

        • @StrayfireX: Just received a text message from Catch Connect, the service is now indeed fully active. The plan is shown in my account now with the option to cancel auto-recharge.FYI,I activated 90 days for $15 from the previous deal.

    • +4

Wish I read this. I ported 36 hours ago and am still in limbo. Text messages are received by by Catch SIM but I can't send them. I can only receive calls on my old SIM. Support are useless.

      Ported from Woolies.

  • Can I order it for visitors?

    • +4

No, you have to pay with dollars like everyone else.

      • Ordered two with my name and card will give it to visitors to use next week.

  • +2

Just hope that you don't have a problem with porting like I did. 2 day outage of not being able to receive or make text/calls. Truly deplorable level of customer service who do not have the training or skill set to deal with dispute resolution or employ common sense.

    • My porting got done within 10mins from Belong to Catch

      • I’m going to port from belong too, does belong need to be notified you are leaving?

        • No, mobiles generally dont need to notify previous provider because it'll automatically disconnect.

Make sure you pick postpaid when porting, and grab the account number from your $10 invoice.

        • @Zeral:

          Thanks!

I’m unsure what you meant by “grab the account number from your $10 invoice.” can you explain.

        • @cloudy:

Any Billing invoice from your Belong Mobile.
Just log into your Belong mobile account -> payments, and downlaod the latest invoice.

  • Is this prepaid or postpaid?

    • +3

Seems like pay now use later, so prepaid

  • Damn it! Bought $15/45GB/90 days recently.

I recently switched to CatchConnect. Absolutely terrible. While I have no issues with the transfer of my number (it was almost instant) between the Kogan Network and CatchConnect, their actual reception is useless. I have 0 reception when I am at home, and when I am out and about i usually get 3G most of the time. This was never the case with Kogan.

I have since requested a refund from them and it has been nearly a week now and they have yet to respond to my request. I have since ordered a Boost sim card to try them out, else i'll be back to Kogan.

    TL;DR. Terrible service with CatchConnect.

    • Thats really surprising in Sydney! That being said on optus I sometimes get pushed down to 3g/data dies temporarily but no issues on vodaphone network (vodaphone/lebara/kogan) - have a go with lebara, they often drop prices on sim starter kits

    • +3

To the best of my knowledge it should just be the same reception as any provider on the Optus network.

There are 3 things you can check to work out why the reception you're getting is so bad:

      1) Coverage: Check that there are Optus mobile towers near you with line of sight. To do this, go to https://oztowers.com.au/Home/Query , enter your postcode, select your suburb, click "Search", and then click "Map View". What you're looking for are the pins with the dark green "O" in them for Optus (it's fine if they have "T"/Telstra, or "V"/Vodafone too). See how far they are from your home, and use your local knowledge of the topography to ensure there's no tall buildings/hills/valleys that would interfere with the signal. Click on the towers near you that you think you'd be using, and it will open a "Site info" popup with more details. Ignore anything that says "Proposed" (which may or may not come at a later date), focus on what's there now. For Optus, check they if have 3G and/or 4G. Optionally, you can also repeat this for Telstra and Vodafone networks. For example, it could be that there is a Vodafone tower near you, a Telstra one in the middle, and an Optus one far away with only 3G, which would imply that you should use Vodafone network (e.g. Kogan), and that Telstra might be okay too (e.g. Boost).

      2) Check that your phone supports all the required bands for the Optus network. Easiest way is to go to https://willmyphonework.net/ , Choose your mobile's manufacturer, model, Country = Australia, Carrier = Optus. A blue tick means your phone should get everything, yellow means some of it, and red means none. Ignore 2G. Optionally, you can also repeat this for Vodafone and Telstra. Ignore everyone else on the list, for the time being it's just those 3, and everyone else is just reselling their networks (TPG is planning to add a mobile network at a later date). Ideally you want blue ticks for both 3G and 4G on those 3 networks, that way your phone is giving you the best shot at having good reception.

      3) Related to both coverage and band, you can have your phone show you what cell tower it's connected to and details about how strong the signal is. On Android, you can install the "Network Cell Info Lite" app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wilysis.ce… . The "gauge" tab will show you signal strength in full detail, and the "maps" tab will show a line from your location to approximately where the tower is that you are currently connect to. This should hopefully match with what you know from the previous 2 checks. You can also walk around and see if you get any/better reception in different areas of your house or as you walk around the block. For example, you might get some/better reception on a balcony or somewhere nearby.

At the end of these 3 checks, hopefully you should have a really clear idea of how the different mobile network are for your location, which tower(s) your phone is connecting to, whether your phone supports the required bands/frequencies, and whether it's actually working as expected. Then hopefully you can make an informed choice about which network is best for you. Knowledge is power and all that. Also affects when you buy your next phone, making sure that it fully supports all 3 networks. I'm lucky that all 3 networks are great in my location, but I do appreciate that not everyone has this.

I know this deal is closed, but I'll put this hear for others in the future. No, it's not necessarily the same as Optus would be in an area. I use an Optus data SIM for internet. I ordered this deal for calls and some extra data. Their data speed is reduced to 3G, but I believe it's throttled even more than that, because I've had Optus 3G data speed for a month before with another company, and while it was slower - at least it worked. With Catch Connect I can't even open youtube on my phone - I have top and bottom icons and nothing else - oh - I just checked - it only took 10 minutes to finally fill the display. But if I click a video I get: "An error occurred." I live in a tourist area. i.e. Lots of infrastructure, low permanent population, which means there's plenty of service but hardly anyone in town right now to use it due to it being so cold. So it's not network congestion.

No point in having data if it's unusable.

  • payment with credit card unsuccessful, tried few times, anyone has the same problem with me ?

    • Same here
The credit card works fine in other websites

  • Does 'new customer' mean, 'new account' like it does with Kogan? i.e. Can you order 2x SIMs, use all the data on the first, then activate the second SIM?

    • probably get away with it, different phone numbers though. might have to make 2 catchmobile accounts with different email addresses.

    • I bought 2 SIMs from the previous offer- $15 90 days plan using same CatchConnect account as I've 2 existing mobile numbers registered under my name to be ported in. This is after confirming with chat agent that this can be done as new customer refers to new mobile number to Catch Connect. Note that if you intent to port in your existing mobile numbers, it is safer (not sure if necessary) to ensure the name on CatchConnect account is the same as your existing mobile numbers to be ported in as I realised that the porting process asked for my existing mobile number, service provider and DOB. Don't recall asking for my name. I presume that they just took the name from my CatchConnect account. I experienced a delay of few hours between having my new Sim activated (with the 90 days plan) after mobile number (from Voda) porting completion. Activation of new Sim after porting completion is amost instantaneous for most of the other service providers I used (Telstra, Voda, Optus, Amaysim, Kogan) .

I forgot to use CashRewards!!! I LOST 5c HERE.

    Damn I could've had this for 95c.

    crying

    • Me too

  • Can I disable auto-renewal now? Or have to wait until I activated it.

  • "Activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised on a promotion"
So we have to activate by June 19th right?

    • no date advertised on promotion - so activate within 30 days of purchase

  • It is really a terrible one. Ordered from the website where it shows free standard shipping, eventually found that I was charged $9 shipping cost (marked as express post).
I can't remember anywhere that I select such a thing.

After a couple of hours, when I contacted with online chat, I was informed it was ALREADY SHIPPED. Then I asked for a tracking number since it's shipped with express post. The answer is "give it to you tomorrow". hmmm…..

Anyway, just watch out when you sign with them or check carefully with your future payment. I will absolutely switch away after 1 month.

  • Never mind found it.

  • My Kogan annual plan is expiring in the next few days, so I bought this for the whole family for the next month and Kogan's $1 prepaid 23GB to be activated before 20 July for the month after. What are my chances of still catching Kogan's 40% discount on their annual plan in August? Or — even better! — some more $1 promotions?

    • Chances are probably pretty good, but be aware that Kogan seem to be enforcing a minimum of around 30 days between allowing "new" activations with their deals. So if you're porting in and out on Kogan, you want to have another offer to use for a month in between.

      • That's what I'm using this post's offer for.

  • WARNING: Ordered 11th, activated yesterday, yet still got charged $35 instead of $1. Rang up billing who will investigate and seek a resolution to which will be emailed with 24-48hrs.

    • My mistake, was charged correctly ($0.99). Pls disregard previous comment.

  • Heads up they stuffed up my port. smh

    • Worked fine for us (2 ports + 1 new number).

  • Just to check if anyone manage to activate their SIM after 30 days from date of purchase. Chat agent says it may still work though they recommend SIM activation within 30 days of purchase.
