  • hmmm, looks decent for the price….hard to tell from the video on performance though.

    • A phone that has a 240x320 screen doesn't really justify the need for a 600mhz - 1 ghz processor.

This phone would be good for somebody who's new to Android and isn't looking to do anything else other than chat / text / web surfing.
I bought this phone for my parent, who's never ever installed a third party application. This phone would probably suit that sort of market.

      • Can it install basic games like : solitaire, chess, tetris?
Can we compare it with sony xperia X8 or X10 mini?

What do you want from a $129 mobile phone……. Big screen, Big resolutions comes with a big price tag……..

What do you want from a $129 mobile phone……. Big screen, Big resolutions comes with a big price tag……..

  • yeh ive had one for 6 months, it's mediocre, its unreliable and you cant install lots of apps because of the low resolution. but just for email, calls and sms it's ok.

    • Are you sure you have this model? It was only released about 3 months ago. Maybe you have one of the older Huaweis. I haven't had any problems installing apps on mine. Most of the the best/popular apps are available for this phone. So far there's been nothing I wanted that couldn't be installed.

  • I am having a HTC Legend and want another Android phone for my wife. She is interested playing basic games I said earlier like Solitaire, Chess, Air Control and little web surfing.
I am confused in choosing from :
    1. Ideos
    2. Sony Xperia X8 or X10 mini ( from optus)
    3. LG Optimus (http://www.uniquemobiles.com.au/Items/lg-optimus-one?sck=218…
    4. HTC wildfire ( http://www.uniquemobiles.com.au/Items/htc-wildfire-white?sck…)

    Any suggestions.

Buy another HTC Legend if you can. Beats the hell out of the phones you listed.

    • +3

Or, by an HTC Desire, HTC Desire HD or HTC Desire Z and give your HTC Legend to your wife.

      • ;) good idea. but dont want to spend too much on a phone.

        • +1

then best option is to let your wife see the phones and let her decide herself. I know last time I went to the CrazyJohn's shop and the assistant offered to load up a brand new phone out of the box for me to play around.

But good deal!! this phone can play some games but quality is no where near the likes of HTC Desire.

        • Thanks for suggestion Ausooi. but she is after my Legend. Grrrrrr. ;)

    • even a samsung i5700 (spica) may do the job for her.

I talked my mother into getting the x10 mini instead of the n97 she was going to get and she did not like it ended up swapping phones with my sister.

    • I've got a Samsung Galaxy S and a Sony xperia X10 mini
The mini is horrible, don't get it.

    Pros:
    - Cheapest Android 2.2 phone on the market.
    - GPS performance is reasonable for a phone.
    - Wireless N support (not sure whether it is wireless 150 or 300 - but single band).
    - Crazy John's included a 4GB micro SD card.
    - Huawei included a device driver on the virtual CD drive (easier to root the phone).
    - General Android 2.2 advantages (wireless tethering, ability to install apps on SD card).
    - Relatively small (for an Android phone).

    Cons:
    - CPU is slow (gaming is generally not pleasant).
    - Screen is small (on screen keyboard is small - typing is a bit harder).
    - Low resolution screen (not good for watching video, some apps required special versions).
    - Camera quality is not good (geo-tagging is supported though), no LED flash.
    - No multi-touch.

    Note:
    - 3G frequency is 2100 and 900. ==> no Telstra NextG (850) support. Don't use it with a Telstra NextG sim.
    - Not the best way to enjoy Android 2.2.

Very good value (GPS, wireless N, radio, bluetooth, support many languages) as a phone. Not designed for games or watching videos (you could still play games and watch video, but certainly not recommended though).

  • This is cheap! Does anyone know whether it is locked?

    • +1

      Online purchase - probably locked.
From the shops (not sure whether this is a online only deal), need to check the SKU.

Below is copied and pasted from whirlpool.

      (Barcode label ending digits)
      Unlocked phones —- SKU's in the range between 1015550 – 10433xx.
Locked phones —- SKU's in the range between 1062602 and beyond

      • Someone mentioned using a "turbo sim" unlocker if the phone is locked. It sells on eBay for ten bucks each.

  • What about the Asus A50 for $199 from dicksmith on optus prepaid. Do they still have those?

    • Sold out online, and alot of DSE's have run out of stock already.

You could call it the "Ozbargain" effect.

  • Anyone know how it handles facebook? Thinking of getting one for my mum :)

  • try to get the same price instore around brisbane but most of them refuse to mark down the price. They said that they are losing money for this phone at 149 price tag

    • i was thinking there will be more chances to get unlock phone instore..just managed to order online..the online application seems not very secure as I've to provide the security code and credit card and end up with just an email notification

I own one of these and only having a very basic phone prior to this, I must say they I am rather happy with it. I don't do heavy browsing, it is a little slow when doing this if the webpage you are looking at is not set up for mobile browsing.

The vibration on it is not the best, but it is very loud when it rings or receives a message (probably depends on what you have selected as ring tone)

I use facebook quite successfully on it, and my gmail is fine. Typing is ok when you turn the phone in its side to type.

There are more applications now using this resolution but if you are an experienced smart phone user who is already using a smart phone, this phone is not for you.

It would suit someone who has never owned a smart phone and wants to know what all the fuss is about at a cheap price or someone who wants one without the hefty price tag.

Don't expect it to perform like the higher end smart phones (with a price to suit)

  • pretty good deal, but i reckon the asus a50 is def. the better phone, looking hard to find one at dse!!

  • Looking at getting one of these to replace the MRS phone, does anyone know if it's likely to accept a Sim from an Optus plan?

    • not if its current stock. Read my other response below.

  • Looked at the Huawei for daughter, but after research have ordered a debranded unlocked Orange San Francisco for $249.00 delivered running android 2.2 from Uk via Ebay. Seen as the best budget android currently available worldwide. Original came with a Samsung OLED screen but demand has outrun supply and currently supplied with a 800x480 TFT which is capitative. People report it is still an exceptional screen. Comes in white or black case. Taking my chances on not having an appreciable warranty.

    Buy here: http://phones.shop.ebay.com.au/Mobile-Phones-/3312/i.html?LH…

Tests here. All with Oled screen:

  • thanks mehow

i ordered one yesterday arvo and got it delivered this morning at 8.30! (im in melb)

unfortunately its locked, but ordered an unlock code from here for $20 USD

    http://www.unlock-tmobilepulse.com/unlock/huawei-ideos-unloc…

reports on Whirlpool are that other users have unlocked successfully using codes purchased from this site, so I've ordered thru here

i hope to have a successfully unlocked phone by tomorrow for 149! :D

(The phone arrived and looks pretty sweet, everyting works fine except its waiting for an unlock code ) :D

    • Your welcome, I tried my Optus sim in a brand new one at CJ in the city. Was locked unfortunately. The first batch that came out months ago were unlocked though.

    • So, did you unlock code work?

  • OK - if you are scared to unlock it - get it from DSE for $179 Unlocked ($15 off)
(at least enough stock in my 3 nearest stores)

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/E6826/huawei-u8150-ideos-and…

    • DSE phone comes with 2GB micro-SD card.
Crazy John's one comes with 4GB.

  • Awesome phone. Highly recommend it. I've had mine for 3 months now and love it. Nothing comes close to it in terms of bang for your buck. At $129 why would anyone buy a feature phone?

  • Two questions. I'm assuming it's free shipping correct? Secondly you have to add a simcard. Is it free until you activate it? And do you have to activate it or can you unlock it straightaway?

    • From what I recall it is free shipping.
You don't really have to have to activate it before unlocking it. I bought mine and never bothered inserting their sim card.

      • So you were able to unlock it?

My local dse has a garmin asus A50 so maybe I'll get that even if I don't plan to use the GPS much. Good idea?
