thx, will grab Telstra kit :)

  • I don't suppose at the bottom of this scan there are any deals on pocket wi-fi modems?

  • +1

Also note the $40 Telstra starter pack is $15 at Woolworths this week (ends tomorrow).

    • Couldn’t find any stock in the Woolies I checked.

Anyone confirm finding it and actually buying?

      • None at my local woolies last week. Haven’t checked if there is any last minute replenishment stock

        • Tried a store with no luck back when they were $20 for the $40 kit.

Tried a different store today without any luck as well.

If they don't have any stock of an advertised item, isn't that considered "Bait and Switch?"

        • @OnTheMark: Definitely baiting but not so sure about switching.

        • @t25:

Fair enough - although they've got heaps of other starter kits with some being on special, I wasn't ever offered one of the alternatives…

Still pretty shoddy business practice IMHO.

Tried 2 more stores this afternoon on the way past them - again no luck.

At one of them, the store person said that she'd never seen a $40 starter kit in the store in the 6 months that she had been working there - they looked on the computer and couldn't even find it on there. After pointing out that it wasn't very good to be advertising something that they weren't intending to sell, I asked to talk to the manager - caused a fair bit of consternation with people ringing other stores without any luck.

Eventually he came back and apologised and said that there had been a recall on starter kits and phones a couple of weeks ago. I have my doubts about whether that's true - especially when aerom bought a couple 3 days ago as mentioned below. Even if there has been a recall, they need to do a better job of informing their workers so that customers don't end up going to multiple stores unnecessarily!

I'm tempted to put in a complaint with Woolworths head office and also with Telstra but to be honest, it's unlikely to have any real effect and will probably just be a waste of my time.

        • +1

Last time they gave me a raincheck on Optus kits, when they sold out. However the voucher is only good for 4 weeks

      • Bought two, 3 days ago from Woolies.

      • I have been chasing this up with Woolies particularly for WA. It was advertised in last weeks catalogue but stock has not arrived to any store. I don't believe the Telstra $40 sim kit has been previously stocked at Woolies. Woolies don't do rainchecks on prepaid sims but they will honour the price once stock arrives according to Woolies.
That said, I believe they will be put on special again this week.

If they don't follow through then it is considered bait advertising and worthy of a complaint to the ACCC.

    • hard to find stock. seems like a bait and switch this time with woolies

    • And optus $40 on sale for $15 at Coles this week

    • I've never seen a $40 telstra starter pack either

      BUT

      They do exist - https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/40-…

Looks new so maybe they havent got them in yet?

Either way be careful on stockpiling these as Telstra seem to be clamping down on this practise labelling it "Fraud"

      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2724629

      • So the $40 starter pack gives less data than the $30 one?

    • thanks! but yeah also not available in my local.. bugger

  • +1

any good phone deals this week?

  • Is this a good way to get AFL live through Telstra?

    • +2

Yes! beware the app does not like un-locked/modded phones though.

    • I think it is better to get the $40 prepaid kit for $15. You need a balance of over $30 to get access to the AFL live app, presumably dipping below the $30 balance even by using 1MB of data will end the subscription. Maybe someone can confirm. At least with the $40 sim kit you have a buffer.

      • No it can dip below $30.00 as mine does regularly and I only top up every 6 months with a $30 top up and it has always kept going. I also read the condition for AFL pass as $30 or above not above $30 as you are, but not sure on this as it is vague wording by Telstra.

  • Is there a way to use the starter kit credit on an already activated account (say pre-paid data plan?

    • +3

      Nope, not any more.

Best you could do would be to port out to another carrier and then port back in on a new offer.

  • I need the Telstra $40 pack, but they are never on special.

  • 28 day expiry.

Is there a long life option?

    • +12

Yes, activate on "Long Life Plus" and you'll get $30 of credit to use for 6 months. 30c per minute calls, 30c text and 10c per MB.

If you need a reasonable amount of data, you can activate on "Long Life Plus" to get the 6 months expiry, switch to "Extra" to convert either $10 for 1GB of data or $20 for 2.5GB of data, leaving some credit for calls/text and then switch back to "Long Life Plus" - you can then use the data for the 6 months that the remaining credit is valid for and make a few calls, etc. If you don't need any calls/text, you can just convert all $30 over to 3.5GB of data to use for 6 months.

If you can get hold of the $40 kit for $15 at Woolworths, you could do the same for up to 5GB of data for 6 months.

      • I made a mistake and meant to ask about Day2Day rather than Long Life.

Do you know if Day2Day is able to be activated with this SIM?

I'm interested solely in the data (the 100MB/day on Day2Day is more than enough for the intended usage).

Edit: Your suggestion re: Long Life -> Extra is far better than Day2Day (which is $1/day so $30 would run out in 30 days). Thanks for the input.

        • +2

I'd assume that it can be activated on Day2Day although I haven't actually tried.

Keep in mind that you would have at most 30 days with Day2Day as $1 is taken from your balance every day regardless of actual usage.

I think that you would be better off getting 3.5GB over 6 months using my method above instead of a maximum of 3GB over 30 days with Day2Day.

        • @OnTheMark: Agreed, as some days 100MB wouldn't even be close to being used. 3.5GB/180 days ≈ 20MB. Perfect.

      • Thanks for this! I didn't realise this was possible, as the Telstra website says this whenever you are about to switch plans:
"You're about to change your Pre-Paid plan. If you continue, you'll lose any unused portion of your previous plan such as credit, talk, text and data"

Hence I've always been on Long Life plus, didn't realise I can go from Long Life Plus -> Extra -> Long Life plus to get more data instead of paying for data by the MB…

      • Thanks for this, very helpful!

  • Have they fixed the much dreaded "technical issue" when activating prepaid sims? I waited and wasted 2 days. Even contacted their CSO (a ticket was raised). Gave up in the end.

  • could i still use the telstra credit on Google Play store???

    • +1 asking the same question and will it be $30

    • +3

No, this died last year for all prepaid plans. Google Play Carrier Billing no longer works on any prepaid plans, even grandfathered ones.

      see:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/telstra_pre-paid_starter_p…

      • You still get Google play credit with the pre paid extra plans but it's only 5 for $30 recharge and $10 for 49 recharge .

  • I'm going to visit Australia for 3 weeks, starting at the end of this week. Is this good option for a traveler like me? If no, any other recommendations?

    • How much data would you like? Will you be travelling to regional areas?

Yes, all are suitable for travellers like you.

Telstra and Boost will have better coverage in regional areas. Vodafone has the most inclusions. All are on special from Coles.

      • +2

One thing to note is that you may possibly get better regional 4G coverage with Vodafone if you have a North American phone with only NA bands as the Band 5 Voda deployed is commonly used over there, so you wouldn't have to deal with not having B28 like on Optus/Telstra.

  • Wow that's really cheap for the Telstra starter packs

  • Telstra share price is multi year low now. Is it a bargain? Or it's dying?

    • +1

Their network is overrated lately, i'm getting higher speeds on Kogan FFS and its been more reliable at that.

  • -1

How many can I activate? Would I get away with a few hundred?

  • Boost still have this offer on their web site until 4/6/18 for anyone interested

  • Is Boost network coverage equal to the Telstra's one?

    • Yep. The coverage is exactly the same (https://boost.com.au/coverage-map/) unlike all other MVNOs, the only minor gotcha is some say that it does not have access to 4GX speed and is capped to a maximum of 100Mbps… which frankly is fast enough for most things anyhow. It's frankly possible it does have 4GX access though https://imgur.com/UvlBzur, https://imgur.com/dImjGvI. Only one way to find out…. ;-)

      • Thanks, I agree for me the limitations you've mentioned are not significant.

  • Whats the expiry date on these?

    • Just purchased Telstra kit in North Sydney and it has expired date of Apr 2020. They still have a couple of them, but don't have Boost kits.

  • Telstra site says that 5Gb bonus starts on $40 starter pack. Can anyone confirm the bonus on $30 packs?

  • No Telstra sims at all in the first Coles I went to, second one had $2 sims but no $30 starter kits, third one had cards saying 'take to counter' upon which a very confused person looked at it and said "where's the sim?", followed me to where the stack of cards were, then had a "I don't know, do you?" conversation with their manager. I gave up. I just wanted a data sim for a 4G modem locked to the Telstra network, so might just pay the extra $5 for a Boost sim with double the data.

    • Dont forget to grab a Raincheck, gives you another 4 weeks at the sale price

      • My local says raincheck doesn't apply to prepaid SIM packs shrugs

  • +1

RE Telstra - Just make sure the $30 sim kit you purchase has the writing of the bonus data on it. Since the bonus data isn't available on the $30 plan online, the online portal won't recognise that your sim is the bonus data one. I ended up having to show my receipt date and go through customer support with them to get them to add a 5GB additionally to my plan and it was messy

    • Doh. I finally found a Coles that had some - the kit I got definitely does not have any "bonus data" offer printed on it. I guess I'm either taking it back or will have to go through customer support like you did…. :-(

      • …and just went ahead and registered it. Came with 5GB data. Contacted the help line and they said that I had registered it as mobile broadband hence the 5GB. So word for the wise - register it as a mobile, not mobile broadband. You may initially only get 2.5GB but you should eventually be able to get them to bump it up to 7GB. I couldn't be bothered arguing the point - 5GB will be enough for my purposes (providing internet access to the kids during a two day road trip).

  • can you auto renew these deals each month after the first month? i can not find it mentioned ANYWHERE!?? or does it revert to some high rate after the first month???

    • They are pre-paid. Meaning they will last for a set period after which you need to top them up somehow. That can generally be done by getting a voucher or similar and then applying it online, or by setting up automatic payments. It's your choice though. The discounted deal is introductory though, so after that you need to pay whatever is the normal going rate.

      • thanks for explaining. these deals are basically useless then.

          • Unlimited Standard Calls
          • Unlimited Texts
          • 15GB Data
          • 28 Day Cycle

All for $10/$15 per month, repeat next month.

        • +2

Not so much useless - it's a nice way of trying a service provider. For example, for $4.90 you can get 23GB of data and unlimited calls/text with Kogan (https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-prepaid-voucher-co…). You may have heard of issues with Kogan and/or Vodafone, but for $4.90 it might be worth getting a sim and trying it out for a month. Hey - it's about the cost of a cup of coffee (well five, if you go to 7-Eleven). Yes, you need to pay them more if you decide to keep it but you can at that time choose to go with a different plan.

In my case it was good because I could put a Telstra sim into my portable wifi for the kids to use for a trip. After that, it will be disposed of. $10 for a silent car is well worth it in my opinion…. ;-)

  • Can these sim cards with mobile (talk) services attached be used in the 4g modems as a temp home broadband solution? Unable to utilise hotspot at this stage.

    • Yes

  • Can anyone confirm these can work with AFL app if I activate it on longlife? Might pickup a couple for cheap AFL live matches.
