  • Does anyone own one of these? Hows the battery life of these?

    • +7

I bought from this previous deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/378361 The 7370 Model

this laptop is superb really good build and for this money you wont even got close to deals from other manufacture
the battery life is not great only 4 hours this goes on all Inspiron models

if you want 8 hours plus battery life then you have to get the XPS Dell models but they far more expensive at 1839 for the i7. the latest XPS is even more expensive at $2100
The Only disadvantage in my opinion in the XPS design is that web cam is located in the button of the screen

    • +1

Same as Forcf, approx 4 hours, probably at the outside for me but I'm usually above 50% cpu so it gets hammered.
Great unit though, a bargain at this price, especially with the 1tb as well, swap out for a spare ssd for better battery life and performance.

    integrated graphics ?

prefer dell ebay i5-7300hq + gtx 1060 for $150 more

or, dell ebay i7-7700hq + gtx 1050 Ti for -$100 less

not sure if they already phase out the above

    • That's 7th generation of processor so not really comparable with this 8th generation i5

      • +5

        get some sense here

cpu performance is comparable to me (Let's be reasonable, this is not celeron vs HQ)

whereas IGP vs 1050ti/1060 = no comparison here - You know which one you'd want if you put your ego aside

        • He's got a point though, there's a huge performance difference between the 7th and 8th gen processors. like 30-40%. And if you aren't doing anything like gaming or video editing then an integrated graphics is superior due to the lesser cost and battery drain.

        • +3

          @Michael15286:

This is a U series 8th gen. The i7 8550U is a 4 core 25w low power chip. It's about equal with the 7th gen HQ series 45w chip, not more powerful. Nvidia Optimus shuts off dedicated GPU when not being used so doesn't affect battery life if given the same CPU.

8550U also has a less powerful 620 iGPU compared with the 630 iGPU in 7300/7700HQ, but not that it really matters.

        • +2

@c0balt: It's pretty close to the 7700HQ but it depends on the task at hand. Watched a Youtube comparison and 7700HQ still beats 8th gen U quad core for hardcore tasks (eg rendering) but for the most part, the 8th gen nearly keeps up but does so in a thinner/cooler/less power hungry laptop.

          @jace88:

This deal is for a base model Inspiron 15. It's not an ultralight or premium model. Nor is it thin or have good battery life with an incredibly paltry 3 cell battery, or an OK 4 cell battery in the upgraded models.

Just based on value alone, the models with 7 series and 1060 GPU are a better buy - also will hold their value better as notebooks with decent dedicated GPUs generally do.

I do like how they have ditched the numberpad in this model. Having a keyboard and trackpad that's actually in the center of a laptop is more ergonomic and just better looking not having everything skewed off to a side.

        • @Michael15286:

If you aren't doing anything like gaming or video editing then the extra processing power will literally never come into play either.

        • @c0balt:
Hi c0balt - As Dell is still advertising this laptop for $2,300 on their Dell Australia website, why would a "base model Inspiron 15", non-premium model (as you have described it) be so expensive?

        • @ifonlyiwasyounger:

The Inspiron series are the base model Dell 15". There are then tiers of the Inspiron with this deal being the highest model Inspiron before the gaming series of Inspiron models. Now to further complicate things there are different configurations of the 7000 series Inspiron 15. It's more complicated than cars because with laptops can get an upgraded to the gills Inspiron series laptop that will out perform a base model XPS and be cheaper too, but not as premium.

e.g. BMW 3 series 335i performing much better than a 5 series 520i but is considered a lesser model. Sorry if you're not a car person, but that's the best I could think of.

Dell also has the Precision, Vostro, XPS and also Alienware series which are the more premium models having higher quality LCD screens, thinner, lighter, more premium construction, better & quieter cooling, higher quality PCB components used, RGB lighting, bigger battery ect. They can be less powerful, but still considered the upgraded model, as weird as that sounds.

Why would the RRP be so expensive? People are welcome to pay what ever they like for what ever they want, those who want a good deal come to sites like OZB and do their research. I can charge $1 million dollars for this rock I found but that doesn't make it a good deal.

    • +1

This has a touch screen, which is usually only available on more expensive models. Also has a 180-degree hinge but that's more of a gimmick.

    • According to the listing :

      NVIDIA® GeForce® 940MX with 4GB GDDR5 graphics memory

Newb, so I could be wrong.

      • You're correct, there is a 940mx in this unit. Probably should be mentioned in the post. However the performance of a 940mx is just a bit above an integrated GPU, so you won't be doing any hard work with it either way.

        • Okay thanks, I was wondering that. Good enough for photoshop and light video editing?

          Are they replaceable?

        • @beerbudget: Nah its soldered onto the board.

        • Dedicated 4GB GDDR5 VRAM is extremely beneficial for photo and video editing tasks, no matter what GPU it's paired to.

    • Different laptops for different uses.
      Gaming line has better graphics.
This line has better CPU, touch screen and is lighter (1.995 vs ~2.65kg) and smaller form.
Better for the average user while inspiron gaming line is better for well… gamers.

      • +2

Better CPU is arguable though, this one is faster for short term loads but won't be able to sustain its turbo clock speeds. For cpu intensive tasks, the gaming line cpus are a lot better. Also the inspiron gaming model with the 1050ti has an amazing battery life for general work purposes (I'm getting around 10 hours)

        • which model is that for 10 hours ? inspiron 7567 or inspiron 7577? interested in getting one. Do you recommend 7577 or 7567? in terms of quieter fan noise. Thanks a lot.

        • +1

@user01: 7567 is what I have. Fan noise is almost non-existent for general use, but they kick in when gaming at full performance or doing something cpu or gpu intensive, which is when they become pretty loud.

As for a recommendation, 7567 is good if you really want the battery life and slightly better inbuilt speakers, but the 7577 is more future proof with a usb-c port and a better gpu that should help keep the laptop running newer games in the future. I can't recommend one over the other as it really depends on your needs.

Guys am after a laptop with a good pen for sketching/drawing ? Do Dell laptops have any? Are the pens comparable with Surface ?

    • XPS 13 2-in-1 does support Active Pen.

      • Thanks mate… Any chance these are available with the 8th gen processors… Are these pens similar to surface ones?

        • +1

This laptop from OP has touch screen. On Dell’s own website, you can add Actual Prn for around ~$25. However, if you want to buy this laptop from theor eBay store, you can contact Dell eBay store & ask them what you want & they would create a custom listing on eBay for you. Hope it helps.

        • +1

@OzSikh: Note that this is not a good laptop for drawing.
You need a screen with an active digitizer for fine control, this is not one.

        • @gunslinger: thanks for the info.. The thread seems a bit old…Do you recommend any laptops with a good pen for sketching/drawing

      • Thanks…. will check it out !

  • Whats the screen like?

    • +1

Ips screens on these are great.

  • Hi OP, do you know if it is possible to upgrade RAM and Storage later on this machine 💻

    Thanks

    • +1

Sorry OzSikh, I am not sufficiently informed to answer your question confidently.

I own one and performed my own SSD and RAM upgrades. Laptop has two storage interfaces m.2 PCIe NVMe and 7.5mm SATA3, both are user upgradeable. There are also two DDR4 RAM slots which are also user upgradeable, 8GB configurations nowadays would normally be 1 x 8GB module. Hth.

      • +1

Thanks for sharing a useful info.

Laptop has two storage interfaces m.2 PCIe NVMe and 7.5mm SATA3

Just need to confirm one more thing that the 7.5mm SATA3 slot is occupied with 1TB HDD, but can be upgraded to 7.5mm SATA3 SSD by replacing the existing HDD ??

  • i'm also loooking for a new laptop, but want somewhere around 14 inch at most (will use for travelling) and has a dedicated graphics card.

    Can anybody recommend?

I saw Razer but seemed to not be a liked laptop due to many terrible stories about it!

    • +1

If you need a gaming-grade card, some alternatives to the blade are MSI GS43, Gigabyte Aero 14 or Surface Book 2.
If you're happy with something like an MX150, then many manufacturers have lightweight 14" machines that would work: some examples are Thinkpad T480(s), Ideapad 720s, Zenbook UX430UN, Envy 13.

    • I just spent ages searching for something similar. Was looking for an ultrabook that wouldn't break the bank that you can game with. Ended up tossing up between the Acer Swift 3 (14" screen, MX150, i5-8250U) or the Xiaomi Air (13.3" screen, MX150, i5-7200U). Both were around $950 from Amazon and Gearbest respectively. Ended up getting the Swift. It's a bit larger so less portable but still easy to take traveling but also had the 8th gen Intel processor. Depending on your budget you could also get the 8th gen Air, but that was closer to $1500.

One would have to tax for ebay purchase as the goods would be shipped from OS and value will be over $1000.

    • +1

No, this is sold from their Australian online store. You will not pay any additional tax, etc.. "Price includes GST & delivery"

    • +1

I don't believe this is the case, most dell's are last minute built and shipped from the factory, it's still an AUS store, so not import.
Would have to confirm with DELL ebay to be sure though.

      • +1

Would have to confirm with DELL ebay to be sure though.

You don’t have to waste ur time to confirm with them. I can confirm that i have bought a gaming PC in the past and it was shipped from Malaysia, but didn’t have to pay any import tax. As you mentioned in ur comment above, you’re buying from Australian seller

  • -2

sorry, one would have to pay for tax as the laptop value will be over $1000 and product will be shipped from OS. Is this correct?

    • +2

      No.

  • Does anyone know whether GST can be claimed when taking it to travel after purchase?

    • Yes.

  • Is this the one everyone is saying is a viable alternative? LINK. I wish it came in red.

  • +1

Would like to note that as of 11:29AM they are in stock, 4 left to be precise. They were out of stock but contacted the page and they were quite kind in putting a few more up for sale late last night.

  • +1

MODERATOR - Please see WattoWatson123's comment above. Perhaps you would like to remove the "OUT OF STOCK" sign?

    • Pretty sure as OP you can do this yourself in the edit tab for the listing at the top of the page.

      • +2

Seems to have finally gone out of stock now, have just checked and the allocation seems to be exhausted.

Can't wait to see how this is, fit's basically every need I've been looking for, was originally looking at the Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro but the idea of no real warranty scared me and this was one of the best priced options out there.

Two concerns I have with it but should be able to deal with is the lack of additional numeral keypad and the thermal limit of the 940MX GDDR5 4GB model which is set to 70 apparently instead of the 90 odd it should be set as it normally is from Nvidia.

Other known issues would be poor quality HDD that is apparently thrown in here although the configuration seems to be similar to the Chinese Model vs the US which saw a better branded HDD and SSD at that. The Graphics card decision of using the older model 940 vs the rehashed MX130 is a slight concern for those more so after battery due to the slightly heavier power draw and we may not even be able to utilize the power of the 4GB due the thermal throttling that has been documented by users and even ignored by Dell although that doesn't surprise me considering they most of write ups they have on their site say two different things at times.
