A-RAM TRX-200 High Speed USB3.0 Flash Drives 8GB $16 / 16GB $25

120

Skycomp has some pretty good deals on these USB3.0 USB Sticks which have pretty damn fast transfer rates. Read speed - 35MB/s, Write speed 20MB/s (for the 16gb).

Note the 8gb is slightly slower than the 16gb.

The nifty thing is, you dont need usb3.0 these will revert back to USB2.0 if you dont have USB3.0.

This is cheaper than any other stores on staticice.

Pickup is available for free in Sydney CBD and you can pay cash. A lot of other stores dont allow this and usually charge surcharges for CC orders. Please note however you cant just walk in and buy them, make the order online and pickup the next business day. Cant comment on how cheap delivery is.

They are also doing an OK deal on Corsair's Fast Voyager 16gb too:

Corsair 16GB $29 upto 22MB/s - http://bit.ly/gUDmqa

If you are after a 32gb version it's best to check this older deal: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/37127

  • whats the max read/write speed USB2 can acheive?

    • Around 30mb/s although i've never got much higher than 25mb/sec - so as far as i know these should just about saturate it the usb2 bandwidth.

      • so its similar? funny i read somewhere usb 3 speed is like 10x more than usb 2.
maybe this usb drive is sucks and cheap stuffs

        • +1

it all depends on what flash memory is within flash drives. yes usb3.0 is much faster and yes this flashdrive doesn't use all of the bandwidth but thats because of the flash memory they use within the drive. believe it or not this is actually pretty fast for a flash drive. you'd be lucky if you picked up a cheap usb drive from officeworks or auspost and it went faster than 5-10mb/sec - this is why these ones are so good. the corsair voyagers are also good as well as patriot xt etc

        • -1

Remember 8 bits to a byte so 35MB/sec is 280mb/sec

MB/sec = Bytes per second whereas mb/sec = bits per second

        • +1

The USB3 interface spec is ~10x faster than the USB2 spec. As mentioned, it's the flash chips that are the bottleneck.

        • yea I thought my usb 3.0 external hard drive would transfer faster, but it's actually 3-4 times the speed, 3.5 times to be more precise.

  • Is A-RAM reputable? Does it have any connection to the brand A-Data?

    • I've heard of them in the past but never used them. They have no affiliation with A-Data.

    • I've used A-RAM SODIMMS and SDRAM, no issues at all.

  • Think I might finally give ReadyBoost a go, these should be perfect.

    • +1

Readyboost doesn't offer any performance increases with machines that have more than 1GB of RAM, and most machines nowadays have at least 1GB.

Cheapest postage to WA is $17. No thanks.

  • If I use this on a laptop with USB 2 sockets, will it still run as USB 3 or is it running at USB 2 speeds?

    • +1

usb 2 for sure. backward compatibility is always.

    • you can still use it with your usb2 slot at (probably) the max speeds so dont worry about usb3

  • Cheap "unbranded" flash memory is crap.

You won't ever get anywhere near rated speeds.

For example, I previously purchased a A-DATA 16GB Class 10 (10MB/s write) SD card, but on testing, it was slower than my Toshiba 4GB Made in Japan Class 4 (4MB/s write) SD Card.. The Toshiba, although rated at 4MB/s wrote at 12MB/s. The A-Data only managed to achieve 6MB/s.

Never again. You get what you pay for. If speed is critical, don't buy cheap stuff.

    • +1

It is a lucky dip, however Corsair is a good brand and they have that at a decent price.

hey, nxxb, A-DATA is one of the best brands!

  • right clicking and copy/pasting links don't work either

    but try these

    A-Ram 8GB $16 35/15 —> http://bit.ly/f24JfU
    A-Ram 16GB $25 35/20 —> http://bit.ly/g0rd1S
    Corsair 16GB $29 upto 22MB/s (corsair website doesn't say exactly http://www.corsair.com/usb-drives/flash-voyager/flash-voyage…) —> http://bit.ly/gUDmqa

  • I saw this when I was walking through Chinatown. Almost an impulse buy until I did research, which found those write speeds mentioned above (35/20).

My understanding is that even when connected at USB 3.0, this drive will only do those speeds. I really don't see the point since USB 2.0 drives can achieve these speeds.

The real world max transfer rates that I've seen with USB flash drives and hard disks are 35mb/s read/write.

    • So there's probably no point in the usb3.0 being on there. Fact of the matter is that these are still fast though. I'd imagine we'll see Flash Drives speeding up in the next few years to similar speeds as SSD's though, for which usb3.0 will be useful.

      • +1

yeah the USB 3.0 is just a marketing gimmick

      • I don't mind USB3 being there at all, as it's letting consumers know the advertised stick is faster than all(?) USB2 sticks currently on the market.

    • Can you provide proof that USB2 flash memory sticks can provide that speed?

The highest average I've ever seen is ~26MB/s read and 12MB/s write (My 8GB Transcend stick, Corsair is slower).

Naturally, the chips in USB3 drives will be newer, and may actually perform better than existing USB2 sticks on the market (in USB2 ports).

      • delete, misread post

  • I got the 32GB version of these sticks and thought they were great. Find me a 32GB flash stick that can write at 25MB/s (real world performance, not theoretical) for $55?

I think these are pretty good value for their price…as long you pickup I guess.

  • Perfect for my USB 3.0 enabled motherboard!

  • These are epic!

Just got one and I'm using it on a USB2 port. 22-25MB/s write speed, 28MB/s read speed :)

  • Damn I should have bought some when I was in Hong Kong. They are way cheaper there.

  • +1

I just bought the A-RAM TRX-200 Turbo 32GB version and on a USB3.0 port the write is 44 MB/sec and read 35 MB/sec (using Check Flash 1.16 to test).

Using the slowest USB2.0 ports (the front ones) I got 31 MB/sec read and 26 MB/sec write. Might be able to improve it on the back ports… but I'm quite happy with that.

Which all told is much faster than my fastest USB 2.0 drive (25 MB/sec read and 18 MB/sec write Sandisk Cruiser Titanium). Doubly so if I compare it to my Sandisk Traveller which was so slow I complained and tried to return it (Sandisk wouldn't let me).

    :-)
