Is that better than this one for $8.66?
Serious question - I have been thinking of buying one.

    • The Moshi one is more suited towards people that require an adapter on the go.

    • +1

The eBay cable doesn't mention refresh rate, while the Moshi one says it'll do 60Hz. This is a big deal if connecting a 2nd/external monitor.

Thanks for the link. I actually prefer this coz it is a full hdmi cable and doesn't require having a cable in case there isn't one where you are

Does this work with a Nintendo Switch?

    • -2

I can't think why it would technically, even if Nintendo wanted people to (which they wouldn't.)

      • Isn't the dock just USB …. Think I remember reading that.

    • +1

It won't. Nintendo have done something to their dock. Using a generic third party adapter doesn't trigger docked mode.

      • Yep, they haven't followed the USB-C Standard properly. Even unofficial docks that are made specifically to work with the Switch can brick it by overloading one of the chips, breaking it. If you send it to Nintendo for repairs, they won't recover save data either.

I love Nintendo, but if they're going to use a standard they should follow it completely, and they also need to sort out the save backup situation. Even modders have made POC save backups which will be released to the public soon.

    • There are specialist versions of this that will work for the Nintendo Switch or even Samsung DEX. Have to get the version that specifically says so though.. the standard ones dont work out the box.

      • I bought the Melopow M002 off ebay for aud22 after doing some research. Works for DeX on Galaxy S8 (Oreo). It is supposed to work with the Nintendo Switch too.

$15 one from Kmart works fine on my MBP.

    • Just keep in mind the $15 one can only do 1080p, which is fine for your standard 24", but not ideal for others running bigger monitors and higher resolutions.

  • Nice deal but won't work for the Pixel 2 phones :(

    • While you are on the topic of Pixel 2.
Im looking for another USB C to 3.5mm adaptor to keep around the house.
Does anyone have any recommendations apart from the google one included in the box (which i am quite disappointed with - i find that bluetooth sounds much better than via the USB C to 3.5mm)

      • +1

You need one with a built-in DAC as the pixel doesn't support analogue audio over USB-C (it doesn't have a headphone amp/dac hooked up to the port)

    • +1

why wouldn't it work with the Pixel 2 phones?

They purposely left out some hardware to most likely make you buy a Chromecast.

        • +1

Is it just me or is there a certain irony about them promoting the superior USB-C standard but more and more restricting things so it isn't standard at all like this

        • @dufflover: It's cost saving mainly. However, most customers don't feel having HDMI out (via microUSB or USB-C) being an important feature. Also, phone makers don't make the MHL, slimport or USB-C Alt-mode cables (no real incentive). Google obviously prefer you to buy Chromecast 2 or Chromecast Ultra.

  • +2

The Pixel phones do not support video out via the USB C port. It seems like Google are trying to force their customers to use the Chromecast.

Edit - Some users have said that they have gotten it working via a DisplayLink adapter. Have to do some more research :)

      thanks for the info!

I have this and it gets hot. Also I think it only works if you have a thunderbolt enabled USB-C port. My findings are based on an empirical observation of three laptops (the two that worked had thunderbolt and the one that didn't, lacked thunderbolt) and may not necessarily be true.
May also be due to USB-C referring to the physical form factor specification, where a USB-C port may actually be USB3.0 in older laptops and USB 3.1 in newer laptops.

    • It's not to do with 3.0 or 3.1 (in fact 3.0 doesn't exist anymore,) it's to do with what alt-modes the USB-C port is capable of.
Any alt-modes should be indicated with an icon next to the port.
It's also not directly related to Thunderbolt, it's just that a device with such a port is more likely to support other alt-modes as well.

      • It can be bandwidth related. Some USB-C ports on 13 inch Macbook Pros have less bandwidth - the ports on the right side for 13 inch MPB touchbar models support thunderbolt 3 but at reduced bandwidth so you would generally use these type of dongles on one of the left hand side ports. So even if the ports are indicated as thunderbolt 3 capable, it is still not sufficient (since all 4 ports are thunberbolt 3 capable) when using a 4K or better (5K or 6K) display.

USB 3.0, 3.1 vs. the new names USB 3.1 gen 1, USB 3.1 gen 2 - basically just name change. Non tech people actually would understand USB 3.0, 3.1 better than the new names of USB 3.1 gen 1 and gen 2.

  • Does anyone know if this would work with the single USB-C port Macbook?

    • Of course! You won't be able to charge the MacBook though.

  • allows you to output HD video and digital audio to your Ultra HD TV or monitor.

Sounds dodgy and misleading.. I believe "Ultra HD" is 4k, and I doubt any phone can output 4k video through the usb C port. I would like to be proven wrong though, if anyone has any further info .
They do say output "HD video" , but seems misleading to mention Ultra HD tv or monitor, when it cannot actually output a 4k signal.
Also, is this really a deal ? Wouldn't a connector similar to this be like $4 on ebay .

    • These 4K@60Hz capable adapters are geared towards people with Macbooks (Donglebooks) or laptops with thunderbolt support.

If you have a phone and just want 1080p, then a cheaper one will do. Samsung S9+ does support 4K HDMI though.

Unfortunately, some people (i.e. me) do have an Apple Donglebook.

    • Go ahead and post a cheaper deal if you can find one!
