Original News Article from the ABC

How do I get in?
Nothing's changed on this front. You'll have to apply for these course like you normally would.

In recognition of how popular the plan will be, the Government's announced it's funding an extra 30,000 training places.

But there's one caveat: only Australian residents who live in Victoria will be eligible for the courses. International students will continue to pay fees.

TAFE courses have integrity and aren't like some of rhose shonkey private operators who enroll students, then go broke, students lose money, students don't get credit for completed work. Then dirctors start up new private Registered Training Organisation with different name. Repeat the process again, pocket student fees and so it goes on.

    • That kind of crap needs to be shut down, the government should really look into what its supporting with hecs.

      • HECS (now called HECS HELP) is for university students. It has nothing to do with private vocational training.

    • "TAFE courses have integrity " Ha Ha-I assume you work for TAFE. You certainly don't work in a trade that relies upon high quality training for your staff.

    • Whilst there are issues in the private sector TAFE's have had their fair share of poor provision: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-12-04/scathing-tafe-sa-asses…

  • "Students may be eligible if they are under 20 years old, or if they are enrolling in a course at a higher level than they have completed before."

  • Could a current final year undergrad student apply for a TAFE course now to complete next year?

The title is misleading; these are not Apprenticeship courses.

"Certificate IV in Disability" this is the type of course you have to expect getting the piss taken out of you every time someone asks what you're studying to take advantage of this scheme so you get to both feel good about yourself for studying, but also ride out another year on Centrelink benefits without having to look for work.

  • Is this only for the 2019 period or valid till further notice ?

  • Deal is active now BTW :)

  • Hi all, would like to know if anyone is doing these courses. Are they part time after hours. Can you manage a course with a full time job?
    Any advice is appreciated.

Are they part time after hours?

Some of the free courses are offered part-time and online/externally.

If you click on any of the courses here and scroll down, it'll show you the providers and which campus they offer the course at (eg. City, External etc)

Chisholm TAFE, for example offer the following courses online, and many of them can be completed part-time (1 module per study period):

Certificate III in Education Support (CHC30213)
Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33015) - Ageing & Home and Community
Certificate III in Individual Support (CHC33015) - Disability
Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping (FNS40217)
Certificate IV in Ageing Support (CHC43015)
Certificate IV in Building and Construction (CPC40110)
      Certificate IV in Disability (CHC43115)
Certificate IV in Mental Health (CHC43315)
Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (CPC40912)
      Diploma of Accounting (FNS50217)

Thanks for your detailed response. I rang Swinburne uni and the cert 4 in cyber security course was only available Full time during morning hours.
Rang Footscray campus of VU and they are doing the course in the evenings. Might have to ring the specific uni and find out course timings.
