Good price, I got one at 99 a few weeks ago for PDF reading. I honesty wouldn't recommend it unless you are desperate for a smart device. 1GB ram is just way too limited on Android 7, It's so slow and apps crash all the time. I had the 3rd gen version too, it performed so much better because Android 4.4 was optimized for 512 ram.

If Lenovo update this to Android 8 GO edition, this thing would be awesome. But as it stands now, I really wish I shelled out more and got the 8 when it was 150 on the TGG ebay sale.

    • +9

Thanks for the review. prob wont get it then

    • +1

Yeah I was just about to comment that 1gb of ram is too little, when there are phones with 10gb ram available!

      • +2

More RAM = More cost. El cheapo tablet gona be build as cheaply as possible = skim on RAM

        • +1

Yeah but even still that's a bit low. I bought a windows tablet a year ago that cost me $116 and it had 2gb..

    • +1

The 3 was a great little budget reading tab, the 8 is currently 178/9 at Harvey Norman/officeworks though I have seen the 8+ for similar money but from China websites.

Maybe wait until tomorrow & use the 10% off code - PAYBACK

    • +2

    • Hopefully they don't jack

      • +2

Doubt it.. prob have crapload to move. Plenty of reasons why its $70

  • +2

This should also be eligible for 10% off tomorrow as per this deal.

  • Isnt this just the same as the lenovo TAB 3 7"? In terms of being newer? whats actually new? just the version of android?

    • +1

With only 1GB, newer Android could be a disadvantage.

    • Looking at the 2 spec links in the OP of the new and old model, the only main differences I could see (apart from Android 7.0 vs Android 5.0) were the processor and the front webcam:

      MediaTek MT8167D Quad-core Processor (1.30GHz) VS MediaTek 1.3GHz quad-core processor, MT8127
      Android 7.0 VS Android 5.0
Webcam Front: 2 MP, fixed focus VS Webcam Front: 0.3 MP

      Also:

Expansion Up to 128GB microSD VS up to 64GB microSD
      Weight 254g VS 300g

Got one for $99 a couple of months ago also. Just use it for reading which is fine, and web browsing is OK. Wouldn't use it for much more though.

    • I'm planning to use it for reading only, nothing online at all or even for music. What's the battery life like?

      • +1

Pretty good. I usually have it on flight mode with just Wifi enabled and it lasts days.

        • Thanks for that. I have a 10" tablet that touted great battery life but just reading pdf files drains it in <6 hours.

Currently using a Tab 3 A7-10 for my toddlers for basic puzzle/numbers/alphabet games and the odd bit of Plex or Netflix. Great for this purpose.

In this situation the jump to 7.0 (Nougat) is a great benefit because it also brings support for Family Link for restricting/monitoring the littles.

It's a cheap tablet. Set your expectations accordingly and it can be good bang for buck in the right situation.

    • +1

Yep, +1 for Family Link. Got my 6yo one of these (also known as a Tab 7 Essential) last Xmas, Family Link is worth its weight in gold.

      • Ah thanks, I didnt know about family link because my kids have been stealing/breaking my freebie Optus Galaxy Tab S.

Picked up this one for use with the 4 year old, youtube kids, some games.
2 year old will use it as something to stand on, or something to use to get chased :)

1gb is a bit of a worry. Will have to return if it doesnt run things like lego games properly though.

  • Is $100, give or take, a standard price for a brand name, quality built Android tablet?

I know this one isn't good because of the specs being too weak, but i'm just wondering if in a year or so they'll be similar models of good quality at this price range with better specs that will make them worthwhile and handy devices.

    • +1

You might want to consider something like this. Not as new (Android 6) and more than twice the price and from overseas, but SD 625 and 3GB of RAM is quite a step up. Otherwise I think you are looking at something near $250-$300 from Aus, eg 3GB RAM or here 2GB RAM for the 2 more expensive ones, I don't see prices of Android tablets coming down much or so over a year like you would with phones.

      • OK cool, thanks for that. Yeah that's the type of answer I was looking for.

I don't need a tablet. I own one which kind of died and can't be bothered fixing it. But for $100 or so I'd consider getting one if the specs were good enough to be worthwhile. So i'd probably pass on spending the $300 or so required to get a good one. At least I know not to look too closely at these tablets for now.

My toddler also uses the A7-10F and it's great. It runs the kid games and Plex and Netflix perfectly well. I bought a BobJ rugged case from Amazon US for it and that works wonders, too.

  • I think Lenovo AU have screwed up their specs.

    Qualcomm® 1.3GHz quad-code processor, MT8167D

MT8167D is MediaTek and what Lenovo US list.

    • Thanks, I thought that looked weird, I'll edit the post.

      • I can see how they could miss it. Qualcomm normally starts with MSM.

  • Need to replace an aging ASUS tablet I bought about 4 years ago. Only use it for Yatse and ocassionally browsing Reddit and some website, looks like this might do the trick.

    • +1

I would guess this won't be much better than your ASUS, it has a slow SoC and low RAM, I actually bought it for a friend and was barely passable for light browsing

  • +2

idonotknowwhy says NO MORE rubbish SoC's like Mediatek

    • +1

Every SoC has its place, there's no way a decent snapdragon is ever going to be under 100 bucks for a modern model, as is I have picked up the previous model for 66 which makes it perfect for a lot of people. I probably wouldn't use it if I was browsing heavily on desktop sites but for basic apps including GPS this thing is great. Planning to install one of them in the car, standby battery life is great and the gps seems to lock on in 2 seconds.

      • Every SoC has its place

Buy one of these (ignore my - vote comment): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/374275 and use it for a day, then come back and say that again :)

        • This is way better than the Pendo, I have been using it for about 2 weeks, and the older model (albeit with similar specs) and its fine. Basic apps work, played some fps from a couple of years ago and they work fine, screen is good enough without being great, speaker is loud enough without sounding good (but who cares because if that matters just use a BT speaker), will be using it in my car to play music and navigate, anf taking it out to watch youtube and random stuff elsewhere.

There are literally dozens of use cases where this thing is perfect exactly because its cheap, e.g. as a GPS, where standalone units cost double or triple what this costs and do less

Regarding the Pendo I have a similar unit that I got from Target (branded Netgreen) for $29 and its fine for a 5 year old. The screen sucks, only has 8Gb and it runs apps ok but not much else. The fact that the speakr is quiet is a plus if you have a kid, and if the kid breaks it its no big deal. I woukd obviously not use it for anything over my phone because the experience otherwise is bad.

I should mention that I picked up mine for 66 and 50 bucks, and while they are the older model I am not quite in at 78 bucks for my purposes

1gb of RAM makes me want to self harm. It's 2018.

EDIT: I know, I know, cheap tablet etc. etc. My 'cheap tablet' from years ago has 1GB of RAM.

    • works fine on the Raspberry Pi 3+ ;)

  • I have one its a pos gonna take it back for refund its extremely slow at all tasks

  • Is there anything in the sub $200 zone that would be worth upgrading to from my trusty nexus 7 2013? I can feel it's not as snappy as it used to be.
