Just in time for RFLan 60?

  • Great deal. Cheaper than current ebay 20% off.
Will fill my synology 918+ nicely.
Replace the seagate nas that i thought i would never fill…

  • Any good deal for surveillance drives?

    • What’s the difference between surveillance drive and standard hdd?

They gear towards more and faster writing than reading.

        • What are the examples of those drives please? I need to get one for CCTV

What is an iron wolf? Seems like a strange name for a hard drive.

not to burst the bubble on this deal. But for anyone looking for a NAS drive, I recommend WD Red's anyday.

10TB Red for $447 with PLUGNPLAY, its a little bit more, but worth it.

      That's 60bucks more expensive tho

Agreed. If you spend enough time on whirlpool, you would find that the general feedback is that it is worth paying a bit more for wd's compared to seagate ironwolf's.

I have a synology 416 play and I would rather pay a little bit more for wd's for the better performance. These hdd's arent cheap to start off, so why not invest in something that would give you the peace of mind.

      • And 2 years ago I lost $50000 of potential I come because I wanted to save some money too. Lesson is backup ya crap

  • That didn't last long.

  • That was quick! :'(

  • Damn missed it! Got 4 Iron Wolf drives in my PC already running server duty (26TB worth) and wouldn't mind another 10.

    • I've always wondered, why do people setup servers for home use purposes?? What do you guys do with it???

      • I run Plex and it needs to transcode and direct stream to up to 3 devices. These are a mix of 4K Blu-ray rips and normal Blu-ray rips, therefore need the hardware of a "PC" not the slow CPU of a NAS.
And I have everything in the house backing up to it.

I know a NAS can do this stuff, except for the transcode of heavy and multiple files, which is important to me.

        • You guys are so technological advance. I don't even know what a PLEX is :(

and 26TB worth of media? WTF?

        • @Homr:

It's pretty easy to hit 26TB of media if you're storing your own Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray rips. Each movie can be up to 50-60GB each.

There are some guys on reddit's datahoarder subreddit (reddit.com/r/datahoarder) with storage arrays that hit 1000TB/1PB capacities and more. One of the well-known members has something like 1.5PB of just porn hah

        • @Homr:

Plex is basically your own Netflix + OneDrive + Spotify. If you have a collection of digital media (movies, music, pictures) you can store them on a PC or NAS (which becomes your "Plex server") and stream that content to any device either on your network or in the world via wifi that is running the Plex "client".

I'll be overseas soon and I'll be streaming some of my stuff in various hotels via Plex :)

        • @beatsntoons: I also live stream my AFL games when I'm overseas from my Plex server. Damn I love that lifetime Plex account!

        • @beatsntoons: will you use Roku or similar dongle to cast it to hotel lcd tv through hotel wifi?

        • @skittlebrau: Most of the stuff on /r/datahoarder is pretty tame in my book. But then again my day job is building large multi petabyte filesystems for HPC

I would of brought in on this deal had i not grabbed another 6x8TB disks the other week for my backup server. I don't bother with a nas at home since I use a ceph storage cluster coming in at 88TB the bulk of that is actually test labs, with snapshots and replica copy amount of 3

        • @televisi:

I've got the Microsoft USB-HDMI dongle that I can use if necessary. Otherwise I'll be taking my Surface Book 2 along so I'll just use that screen (and can cast via the dongle if I have access to a TV)

      • Data storage to be shared across home network. Plex etc.
