  • MUCH more importantly, Toner for $45!

    http://msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=2768

Edit: Actually I don't think this one works with it, damn.

    • Yes, that one fits the old Samsung ML-1610, which has no chip hassles. I'm keeping mine!
Cartridges are cheaper on ebay. A simple bottle of toner refill was $10.

Other people might want to consider buying a used printer on eBay/etc that can be refilled easily.

Great buy. Got a few for work from MSY last year. Great printer. Toner is cheap as stated above. Can get refill for $30 on ebay aswell.

  • +4

Also some mention on ebay of Toner Firmware to allow you to refill or use non-Genuine toner cartridges.

  • Could someone clarify 2 questions for me?

    a) how many pages will the shipped toner print (1000?)
    b) how many pages will replacement toners print (2500?)

If I'm correct on the above then I think I'm getting my first laser printer today! Especially interested in the toner firmware topic, I've been using 3rd party ink refills in my inkjet for years making colour prints an absolute bargain but I've always thought the flexibility of laser printer just for bigger print outs would be great to have too.

UPDATE: Actually I might have answered my own question, this review here (http://www.trustedreviews.com/printers/review/2010/05/02/Sam…) states the toner cartridge is available in only 1 size, 1500 pages. So I'm going to assume the answer to both questions above is "1500", could anyone clarify that?

Standard: Average Cartridge Yield 1,500 standard pages, (Ships with 700 pages Starter Toner Cartridge)

Straight off the Samsung AU webpage. http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/print-solutions/print-mul…

      • Thanks MetalPhreak!

For $58 this looks like a really good deal.

        • It's not the highest yield laser printer but its good for the price. My current samsung laser printer was $99, shipped with 1000 page toner. Replaced it with genuine 3000 page toner for $109. Twice the price but also twice the toner ;)

      • I've seen claims of 400 pages in real life use by various users on forums and sites.

So somewhere in between 400 and 700?

  • alternatively, it looks like the other samsung ml-2525 is still available on the officemax website for $49. http://www.officemax.com.au/technology/printers-faxes-and-mu… i bought that late last year for $55 including shipping to the act and so far it's worked a charm. based on initial reviews it looks like both printers are quite similar, except that the 2525 can print more pages? just a thought.

    • +1

ML-2525 is larger/heavier/noisier/slower than the ML-1665, drops Linux support but gains a larger input tray (250 sheet vs 150 sheet) and bypass input (single sheet only). That said, the ML-2525 a still a very good buy if you can find one for under $60.00. IMHO, the ML-1665 is the better all-rounder for home use.

      • okey doke =)

didn't know about the bypass input thingy. i had a quick look and it does seem that the toner is slightly more exxy than the 1665 toner, but then again you get more pages… i haven't bothered doing a page by price break down. too late for me now anyway, i already own the 2525 and i don't really need 2 laser monos just because the price is good. LOL

i'd love to try linux but i'm too chicken to figure it out and put it on my comp and win 7 so far seems fairly ok to me.

      • I am using the ML-2525 with Linux, no problem. Might be throwing it out when the toner runs dry though.

        • how come? just time for an upgrade? toner too exxy for you? i've only used my 2525 a few times so far and have been happy with it. not sure when i'm going to get through the starter toner. could be years at the rate i'm going. lol

        • I just mean a new printer might be cheaper than toner. Hope not.

  • +2

As steptoe mentions above there seems to be a way to trick this printer using 3rd party toner such as this one: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SAMSUNG-ML1665-ML-1665-MLT-D104S-MLTD…

It claims 3000 pages by simply using a "smartchip" to reset at 1500 pages to get another 1500 pages. So basically 2 toners in 1 for $40 delivered.

  • What's the difference between ML-1665 and ML-1660? They look the same to me.
ML-1660 is on sale for $48 @Clive Peeters

    • I think it's just the colour of the housing. The ML-1660 is grey (and didn't sell particularly well), while the ML-1665 (as listed here) is black. A $10 fashion choice? ;-)

    • Yeah good question, I've dug around and cant find the answer either. It seems the guts of them is also identical. Same 150Mhz processor, Same 8MB memory, Same 1200dpi resolution, although interestingly the ML-1660 seems to fair worse in reviews to the newer (identical?) ML-1665 on print quality.

Could it be as OzDJ_ says, reviewers suddenly like this printer because it's colour change? Surely there is more to it than a housing colour change right? :) This is a very good question because if it's just colour I'll go daggy grey and save myself $10 lol.

EDIT: Whoops maybe not, seems the nearest Clive Peters is >1000km away hehe

      • Try price match at dick smith?
Yeah colour is important, red cars do drive faster! LOL

  • A search found a Samsung brochure where they are together as 1660/1665 and no difference in specs except the colour. So if you don't mind grey, save some money. :)

  • this is usb only isnt it? what is the best value network laser printer?

  • I looked at this printer and found the $85 Canon to be a much better buy once you consider the availability of generic toner carts etc.

  • Yeah - spotted it with their subscriber email
    Much better deal than http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/37321

  • I have a 1660ML and I must say it's great. After 3 inkjet printers, I'm never going back. Mono laser is the only way. The original died after a few hundred prints. I bought some 'toner powder' refill on ebay for $25. Instructions were to cut a hole in the toner and fill the cartridge with the powder. A little messy, but it works and it's cheap. Apparently you can only do it once. It's been several hundred pages now and it's still running great. +1 to this deal.

  • Awesome price particularly when they come with half the toner filled so you save some money here to either re-fill it or get a new tone, I think cheap

  • Out of stock at Five Dock, should get 10-15 by tuesday.
    Catalogue $76, tag $58.
