Is anyone using it able to let others know if these things are worth it or not.

    • +4

I have two and never use them, but I think it's a matter of forcing yourself at first (which I haven't done). In theory they could be handy. The audio is pretty good and if you want better sound you can plug speakers into them (if you have some) or get the bigger ones with better speakers.

      • +3

In theory they could be handy

Before I buy anything anymore, bargain or not I askmyself - Do I need it?

        • +1

          The Evolved OzBargainer.

        • Un-ozbargain attitude…

        • If you had an Amazon Echo you could asked Alexa and SAVED yourself the hassle of thought.

        • @Sheez: True, tru

    • +3

My family is enjoying having them. We've got two dots both plugged into external speakers (because we had some unused desktop speakers around).

Kids enjoy asking for the weather and jokes.

For adults, we listen to the 'flash briefings', add things to our shopping lists, ask random trivia type questions (results vary), and I've written a couple of skills to access specific data.

Yes, all these things you could do on your phone/computer…so it's not necessary, but at this discounted price they're a bit of fun.

So far I've avoided spending money on home-automation things. And I think that's where the real power lies.

      • I’ve used mine to turn my Lifex lights on and off. Handy when I’ve turned the iPad off for the night.

    • +1

These are great. I have it hooked upto a logitech harmony companion and a sonoff smart switch. This lets me just sit on the couch and say 'alexa turn the tv on' and it will switch on my av receiver, xiaomi tv box and my tv with the correct av input channel.

Then I can also say 'alexa turn on the light' and it will tell my sonoff to turn on. All of this is available with very little setup and its all kids and wife safe. Its really convenient. Happy to share details if anyone is interested.

      • Yes please, interested in details.

  • can i get echo spot for $159?

    • Pretty sure that’s not available on oz amazon.

      • available on preorder

      • Just got the email yesterday, saying it is now available in AU. Kinda stoked.

    • +1

Heads up, no youtube on it due to fight between Google and
      Amazon

    • Just tried the AWS code and it didn't work unfortunately.

  • +1

thanks OP got one, if its crap It will become a birthday present

    • +9

      But it's 6 months away

doesn't integrate with their audible. Spotify needs to be premium account only. Unless someone disagrees, its just there for basic things like what is weather, etc.

I find google home is better.

    • +1

Echo dot I find better for home automation. For music mine syncs to my Plex server

      • In what way is the Echo better for home automation, if you don't mind me asking? I have a Google Home but haven't invested in any smart home things yet.

        • Amazon has more native connectivity to automation devices - Google is improving but still requires a third party like IFTTT to get things working.

        • -1

@singlemalt72: Have you seen the list of stuff Google natively supports? Its extensive and covers probably anything you can buy! Its far better at handling natural language and working out what your asking than Alexa which is important unless you want to train anyone how to use it.

        • @mgf909:
Amazon was first to the market and hit the ground running, they even purchased some home automation companies.
As I said, Google is improving but is still behind, they will probably catch up in the near future. This doesn't mean Google Home wont control the same devices, you just need to use a third party app at times.

FWIW I have Google home (4 devices) and think it is great.

        • +1

          @mgf909: Another breathless Google fan

        • You can manage all (most) your Xiomi things with it. I'm managing my bulbs and air purifier via Echo dot.

        • +1

I have both and I call alexa more often than google. The echo is faster than gh when controlling stuff at home. It could be because of my setup (HASS).

The echo can also pair with a bluetooth speaker while gh cannot.

        • +2

@jobski: GH can pair with BT speakers now too

      • Spot on. Amazon is better for Hass / Automation configurations.
Playing jeopardy is fun too! :)

    • Can get spotify premium for less than $20 a year if joining philippines family hacks.or if you have patient to set up your own pretty much free.

    • +4

Spotify is $12 a month I have absolutely 0 hesitation paying. If you listen to music you're mad staying on the free version

    • +3

Free Spotify is useless anyway. So either you don't use Spotify or use premium

  • Thanks! $39.25 delivered, estimated 25-27th April delivery to Brisbane CBD (including the public holiday next week)

    • same for rural nsw :) I have Spotify premium so happy to use for that.

      • I have a Sonos Play:1 that I'm looking forward to integrating with… Will also start to dabble into the smart home space with some globes etc. in the coming weeks!

        • +1

I made this mistake when buying my echo dots, there's no Sonos skill in Australia yet. You can configure it so it uses a US account or something and then add the Sonos skill, but the Aus one should be coming in the next month or so

  • Strange AWSECHO25 doesnt work for me

  • Is it only for new account?

What's the usual decision points whether to go with Google Home or Alexa? I have impression that Alexa is supported by more devices?

  • $40 to have something constantly nagging & watching me. It’s a cheap reminder that I am happy single. Thanks for the deal!

    • +6

It only speaks when spoken to. You haven't been in many relationships if you think that's what it's like ;)

      • +3

Just having to remember I have to speak to Alexa is too much commitment.

    • +3

You forgot losing money with no knowledge of it happening.

      • I wonder the transparency of personal data being mined with out my knowledge.

  • Does Alexa intergrate with chromecast or similar device? I have a google home that will let me youtube, spotify, netfilx etc on my tv with chromecast, would get the eco if it could do something similar. Otherwise it would just be for music which I can use my phone and a bluetooth speaker anyway.

    • No cast integration with Alexa.

      • +1

Yeh, I have a feeling that the amazon echo will become the betamax to the 'VHS' google home.

        • It is looking a bit that way but time will tell

    • I think this works if you use the Fire TV stick rather than Chromecast

  • +1

Can I use this to order more random crap I don't need or really want ? Alexa echo gen 1, order me 5 more echo dot gen 2, then search ozbargain for me, looking for more crap I don't need, but cannot resist as its such a great deal

    • +1

Alexa: Let me Google that for you.

  • +1

Sorry Amazon you are late, just ordered Google Home mini via latest Ozbargain deal.

  • -1

Bought at the last AWSECHO25, disappointed with the fact that it didnt work without power.

I thought there is a battery inside echo dot but it isnt :(

  • +3

    http://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/amazon-proposes-vo…

    Just saying….

Of course it's pointless worrying about privacy, we lost that battle years ago.

    • I still would never have one of these similar things in my house.

    • Wow, I am now double and triple thinking to buy this stuff.

  • Are these better or the Google Home Mini?

  • I bought one basically just to control my LifX lamp next to my bed because I'm too lazy to fiddle with my phone.

  • +1

What's better, this or Google Home? Do they interact with each other like, Alexa, fight with Google?

    • +1

I have both Google Home (Original + Mini) and Amazon Alexa (Echo Dot + Ecobee 4)
To be honest, I do prefer Google Home in general due to the integration of Google Account and Google Music (which also comes with Youtube red subscription)
However, Amazon Alexa has some better feature than Google
such as the integration of Xiao Mi Eco System

Google is quite behind especially in Australia
Many smart devices integrations are now available in US, but has been disabled in Australia

  • Thanks for the heads up. I grabbed one for $39 thats a dead set bargin.

  • Dont think these work with Sonos yet in Oz, so ill have to pass :(

  • +1

did price match with office works got it for 37 bucks

    • That's lucky. I didn't think they price matched coupons.

    • which officeworks was that?

  • Can I control Xiaomi products through the gateway with this?

  • Bought it. Already have the 1st gen Echo. Plan to use this for HA

  • Thanks OP, have purchased.

  • FYI, this also works for the Echo itself. Comes to $99.74 delivered. Solid discount.
