Sennheiser HD800 $1,060 + Shipping @ MyMobile

80

These headphones need no introduction, as they are the well known legendary HD800.

Previously a much better deal from "Addicted to Audio" for $999 and local warranty: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/312026

However, this is currently the cheapest price you can get I believe.

Please bare in mind this is "Grey (import)" stock from Hong Kong so no Australian Warranty and also as its $1K+ purchase, likely have to pay import tax too.

Shipping came out to $22 uninsured for me.

All in all, I personally would rather pay extra for local stock but thought I post it anyway for those interested.

Be mindful, to use these to their potential, you'll probably want to use them in combination with a decent amp, as they have an impedance of 300 Ohm.

    • Agree. You'll need to invest another few grands for good DAC, Amp (and recabling if you want to go balanced), to make this headphone really sings.

  • Best paired with the HDVD800 headphone amp, on special at addicted to audio for $2048. So many bargains out there.

oops that's a demo unit- keep on searching for best price on a new one.

    • Hdvd800 isn’t giving me results, anyone having first hand experience with a good dac amp for this headphone mind recommending their setup?

An O2 DAC/amp will do you just fine. I got mine from Head N' HiFi a couple of years back, but there are other vendors as well. JDS Labs, Mayflower, Massdrop. They're a lot cheaper than a HDVD800 too.

Even a descent soundcard like SBZ would do fine.

O2 Dac/Amp will not do you fine for the hd800,. I'd look at the audio gd nfb 11 as the least.

        • I like the balanced output of the hdvd800 but not a fan of its dac so been running it through mojo, I’ll opt in for a balanced output dac amp combo or a good dac for the hd800 as the hdvd800 in my opinion is a fine amp but a crappy dac and hdv820 isnt any better dac

        • @danishcookie:
I run mine balanced on AudioGd Ref 5, Little Dot MK VIII amp w/ Mullard M8162, and Moon Audio Blue Dragon cable.

Had to login to reply to this. The O2 ODAC will do you absolutely nothing. I own the HD800 currently and have owned the O2/ODAC as well as the Schiit Magni/Modi and these options are TRASH with the HD800. It's so utterly disappointing you may as well have a HD600 (which I've also owned).

The amp that made me go crazy for the HD800 was a La Figaro 339 (I think?). Incredible beyond belief but that was over 5 years ago. I'm sure newer headphone amps have come out are probably sound better.

        • was thinking of giving schiit a try but based on your experience will skip it

        • @Shika: Thanks

        • @BrewerHaHa: Mmm, distortion city. I suppose you listen to vinyl too?

        • @thatguyfromthatplace: Never listened to vinyl. This is one of the rare cases where I can say I've owned the combo people are looking at purchasing. Lots of people like to throw their advice around thinking what will pair well with what without ever trying it.
It's not distortion, it's just underwhelming. If you're setting for an O2/ODAC, get a HD600. When you pay $1k for a headphone you expect something amazing, but with low end combos it's just meh. Not bad, not good but not worth $1k for the headphone alone.

@danishcookie: The magni/modi are the only Schiit products I've tried. They were both OK. If I had to choose something in that price range again it would be the O2+ODAC, but Schiit have released a second revision of both the Magni and Modi.

I wouldn't stay away from their products, but the Magni/Modi with the HD800 and it's not great. Maybe their higher end options pair well but I wouldn't know. I've liked the Lehmann Black Cube Linear and also Violectric with the HD800. Those are very safe options but they're very nice. I remember trying something from Resonance Labs a while ago and also thought it was very good. Those 3 as well as the La Figaro are the ones that have stood out to me but I haven't tried anything more recent (within 3 years).

O2 distorted so bad with my HD800S so got rid of it. Thinking about Sony Ta-zh1es but the price has never reduced below $2899 mark for me to pull trigger

        • @BrewerHaHa: Price does equal performance when it comes to audio. You do get the odd exception to that, but most of the time you're simply paying more for a different sound, as opposed to a better one. The O2 was designed to provide high performance at a low cost, and it succeeds admirably. When I purchased my HD800's I tested them on a Violectric V200, a Sugden HA-4, the aforementioned O2 amp, and a Burson Audio Soloist. The Violectric was indistinguishable from the O2, and the Burson sounded noticeably worse. The only one that stood out was the Sugden, but closer listening revealed that it was merely different, as it was exaggerating the high end. The truth of the matter is that provided the circuit design reaches an acceptably low level of distortion, and isn't doing anything odd to the signal, you're not going to hear a difference.

        • @thatguyfromthatplace: What source were you using to test all these amps?

        • @BrewerHaHa: A Violectric V800.

        • @BrewerHaHa: Black Cube Linear is a sublime match with all the high end Sennheiser headphones.

      Best paired

According to Sennheiser who are trying to sell idiots an amp for $2000

But I've got golden ears! Anything less than this quality in audio and I break out in hives.

        • +1

If it doesn't cost at least as much as a used car then it isn't worth listening to.

  • The wife will be pissed!

    • Tell me about it, I bought 2 new headphones in the last Month and a new amp/dac.

    • +1

At least you wont hear her rambling on if you have the headphones on and volume is cranked right up.

  • Always good headphone deals on Massdrop

    • Yep, they currently got the HD6XX which I am tempted to get.

      • +1

I got them about six months ago. Seem nice quality. I have hardly used them as I rarely listen to music. Also got a nice balanced connection cable off eBay.

  • The more expensive dac/amps produce cleaner, greater instruments separating, greater sound stage, and punchier sounds. You won't know until you compared them side by side. After Asus xonar stx II there is very return per $ spent.

  • I use these in 3 different setups;

Woo Audio 7 DAC/AMP unbalanced, Woo Audio WA7 Fireflies Class-A Tube Amp and 32-bit USB DAC with Woo Audio WA7TP Tube Power Supply

2 by NuForce HA-200…Dual Mono amps balanced, Cambridge Audio DAC Magic +

Massdrop x Alex Cavalli Liquid Carbon X Amps balanced, Cambridge Audio DAC Magic +

    All 3 setups sound great.

Not too pricey either, these headphones are fantastic, but look at Mr Speakers Aeon Flow - same price - very nice planars

  • They better sound like a thousand bucks.
