When they say all Merino I thought it was 100% Merino, turns out to be 60% FYI. Not sure if that is good/bad/average

Thanks for saving me the effort of looking and investigating.

"When they say all Merino I thought it was 100% Merino, turns out to be 60% FYI. Not sure if that is good/bad/average"

I think perhaps Icebreaker is one of the long term premium brands in this sort of field and I notice that they have things that are 100% merino and others that are 50% or 65% so I guess it can depend on the purpose of the garment.

  • Pity I only heard about this tonight. There's not enough time really to get a delivery to Queensland before my plane leaves next Thursday morning. This stuff would have been handy in the UK.

    • 100% merino is what you want for travelling.

My current collection includes items from Mountain Designs, Icebreaker, Wool&Prince and some socks from C&A. Soft shell pants (one pair merino lined). Still need underwear.

Did two months travel with 4 shirts (2 bottom, 2 mid-layer), one pants, soft-shell jacket (Kathmandu Outlet) and two pairs of socks. (Underwear was uniqlo airism x7 for weight reasons).

      • You should really visit Aldi, not just from an OzBargain $s view - it's on sale once or twice a year - given a choice between the range of famous brand name merino I have (the brands you mentioned, Macpac and others), but I find when traveling or camping that I often wear the Aldi stuff more. This year's merino underwear was amazing when compared with similar I have from Icebreaker or XTM.

I have found stuff on Ebay/AliExpress that I like for sleeping.

        • Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for the aldi underwear.

  • 100% merino is what you want for travelling.

Not necessarily. 100% merino isn't very durable, and tends to get holes in it fairly easily.
What you really want is core spun merino, which is merino wool spun around a core of 10-15‰ nylon.
This increases the longevity of the merino significantly, makes it faster to dry, and retains less moisture, while not significantly impacting it's softness, warmth, wicking ability or it's anti odour properties.

    • I have been wearing 100% merino for travel and camping for years now, never a problem with durability or holes.
The only item that I've had issues with was a pair of icebreaker boxers that ripped the first time I wore them.
I have gone through a number of pairs of socks, but that is simply due to the rubbing on hiking boots, however the advantages still mean I buy more for next time.
