    Got a women’s overcoat originally $189 down to $5

And they're probably still making a profit.

    • With the company going bust can we actually get sales figures on how many $189 garments they sold at full price??????

I had a short stint at rivers whilst I was studying, they were TERRIBLE to work for, not the worst workplace I've had, second worst. My managers were absolute pooheads, area manager watched me get abused by a customer and told me to suck it up. I was forced to switch from casual to part time even though they would only give me three hours a week, therefore earning about $60 a week before tax. I'm really happy to see this company go under, I feel for those young people who have lost their jobs though.

  • Rivers has completely closed down, all shop fronts selling stock including the shelves and anything that isn't tied down. The rivers website doesn't even appear to work anymore

The Rivers in Carseldine QLD were selling 3 items for $10

  • Just got a 100% merino wool jumper for $5. Can’t get that price anywhere else.

    • Can you sell one to me?

or ozbner's are generous so just a gift!

  • The tag line on the FB page (this deal's URL) says "Iconic Australian Retailer"

    Yea, right!

    • +1

It is a typo. I was meant to say "Ironic Australian Retailer".

      Yea, right!

They were a great company - I remember from my youth, when their stuff was made in Australia before owners succumb to greed.

Much to globalists’ chagrin, tariffs did develop skilled labour and benefited this country.

      • +1

The Australian garment industry didn't develop skilled labour or really benefit this country. It benefited immigrants. A lot of these large companies who sing Australian made so proudly put their manufacturing and even packaging to tender. They don't pay an hourly award wage to hundreds of locals and help them develop rheir skills as you suggest. They say "we want 10,000 shirts made. Send us your price."

And guess who wins these contracts? Someone who runs a localised version of a sweat shop, hiring people who don't speak English to work in horrible conditions, for very little money.

My Vietnamese friends dad did this out of his garage at home for the last 25 years. Still doesn't speak English.

There are unionised factories who pay award, but they're rarer and rarer now.

My own mother worked for Rundles (now Rundle Tailoring) in Newcastle in their sweat shop when she first arrived in Australia with zero English.

My ex gfs parents worked side by side in a factory sewing and packing Van Heusen shirts in Sydney for nearly 40 years without
        speaking a word of English.

Don't let the Australian Made logo fool you for a second. The manufacturing might be done here, but I guarantee you the money is still hesding overseas, usually tax free too.

Oh brother, don’t cry me that river. First generation always have it tough - my well qualified father couldn’t speak so stacked bricks in a kiln (not figurative - real sweat). I went to university, got degree. My kid’s aiming for a doctorate.

If life is bad here, there’s always a return ticket to the shithole from whence one came.

            @AlexF: That's a stinky attitude right there.

          • +2

@AlexF: What on Earth are you raving on about you lunatic lol I think you've misread the tone, misinterpreted something or just trolling.

I'm being extremely specific, talking about the Australian garment industry. I also clearly said it BENEFITED immigrants, at no point did I say life was bad here or any of the people mentioned had any complaints about their jobs.

But way to go, you, stereotyping immigrants. Just because life is good here, it doesn't mean their country of origin is a shithole. Rather obtuse statement from someone with a tertiary education. I have no idea why what you and your son do have to do with this thread at all. Unless your degree led you into textiles engineering and your son's doctorate is
for ridiculously obscure research of how global warming has affected the pigeons
whose poop is used in the Chouara Tannery in Fez or something equally niche like many doctorates.

You and I, like the majority of the offspring of immigrants may be classified second-generation immigrants, but really, we're Australian. Real immigrants now, apart from a select few instances, will not be able to immigrate to Australia let alone find steady employment if they couldn't speak a word of English.

All I was trying to say is Australian Made labels are an absolute joke. They don't pass muster.

Icon definition:- 'a small image or symbol displayed on a computer screen'

💩 Seems about right to me.

  • i ordered a bunch of stuff from rivers about a month ago and half the stuff wasnt even in the bag, I never got a refund or anything to state they were out of stock. Porbably going to have to charge back or osmething.

    • Don't wait, just charge back from bank, they're done.
