The i5-8400 one seems like a great deal. Just add your own SSD.

    • Item location:
      Dell Overseas Factory, Malaysia
      Delivery:
Estimated between Tue. 22 May. and Mon. 28 May.

      cant wait for this long

  • Does the m.2 slot support NVME yet or is it still restricted to SATA only?

    • +1

Picking up mine later today from last deal, so will find out. I wanted to see before I bought an SSD for it if it have nvme support or not, so this new 20% of deal perfect timing. Mind you I'm coming from a previous computer with 5200rpm HDD so even M.2 is a big jump for me.

      • I contacted Dell and they only told me it supports SATA3 so I bought a 250gb 860 EVO. My order from the previous deal should be coming today too. Maybe I can confirm at the end of today.

    • Can confirm that it does, I set mine up on the weekend with a samsung 960 evo. Requires removing the graphics card for access and you will need a screw, M2 x 2.5mm. I ended up using one from the graphics card IO panel.

      • wait really? :O

      • Oh also which system did you get? the i5 one? Have you ran any benchmarks on the drive?

        • yeah i5 5680 from the last deal. I have only done benchmarks using samsung magician to confirm correct drivers were installed. 3,5k reads and 1.7k writes from memory.

        • @Twitchy:

          Awesome! :D

        • Cool, so that's full nvme speeds then. Ripper.

        • @Twitchy:
Would you be able to post a few photos of the dell PC along with a picture showing the 960 evo inside? Not trying to be a dick but I'd hate to buy a 960 evo (eyeballing one right now) and then find it doesn't work and you were trolling (not saying you are, would just reassure me :P)

        • @havoc-aus: yeah no worries, I'll take some photos when I finish work.

        • +2

          @havoc-aus: google photos link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/WdXS8SCaYLaoejtj1

Looks like I over estimated the speed that i remembered. It was 3200 read/1500 write and I ran the benchmark again which is shown in the photo.

        • @Twitchy:
          Thanks! Appreciate it :)

        • @Twitchy: Was it a hard install? Was looking to buy the 960evo too but have never added a SSD. Have you benchmarked apart from using Samsung Magician?

        • @frankiee: Not hard at all. Just a few screws and brackets to pull off. Just follow the link I mentioned below.

I haven't benchmarked with anything else unfortunately.

      • How do you know? An NVME drive will still work, but will be limited to SATA3 speeds as far as i know. Have you tested it to see if it exceeds SATA3 speeds??

        • +1

only using samsung magician. see above.

Hey mate, I was wondering if you could please advise if you had any issue making the SSD the boot drive after installing?

I've installed the 500 GB version of the 960 EVO. I followed your pictures on where/how to install (thanks for that!), but am having the issue where I can't access the drive, nor set it as a boot drive.

The Samsung migration software picks it up fine though and I've already cloned the HDD to the SSD, but can't change boot selection in BIOS (BIOS detects the SSD, but doesn't make it a selectable option for booting off).

Can't PM you btw, hence had to ask here.

Cheers for any further help you can provide.

          HI Baltoski,

Sorry for the slow reply, I missed the notification…

Unfortunately I can't help you there as I didn't play around with the boot order. I did a clean install rather than a migration(clone) and only the SSD was connected at the time. This ensures the bootloader is on the correct drive and it must have configured the bios to boot from that drive.

I think the website I was following is the following:

          https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10…

Sorry I can't be of more help. Let me know if you have any other questions.

          Cheers,
          Twitchy

        • @Twitchy:

          Hey mate,

Just wanted to say thanks for the reply.

Ended up getting it working with a little tinkering.

          Cheers mate, all the best.

      • Twitchy, I'm having an issue with setting the boot order. If my cloned ssd is the only drive it'll boot, but otherwise it boots from the supplied drive. Did you need to change anything?

        • Hi Taeryn,

          See above.

  • +5

I received mine from last deal. Box is heavy & sturdy compared to self made or DIY.

It has 1 8gb Samsung 2400T ram model M378A1K43CB2-CRC if someone wants upgrade from 8gb to dual channel 16gb.

  • Anyone know how easy to add extra SSD into these DELL desktops? Do they actually come with extra socket for additional SSD?

    • +1

I just bought one and added an SSD, there is a standard 2.5SSD mount so I just cloned the dell install from the included HD onto the SSD, all you need is a sata cable and at least 2 screws to attach the ssd to the mounting tray (I didnt check if there was included screws in the case somewhere), there is also a m.2 mount on the board but I believe that is SATA only and not NVME

Additionally a nice to know is that the psu has a 6 pin pcie and a 6+2 pin pcie power connector, although it is only a ~460W psu

Case is nice enough although mainly plastic and feels a little cheap externally, sturdy inside

the 1060 GTX is a reference style blower with no real branding on it but it isn't the founders edition card

      • what software did you use for the clone on original hdd? any instruction i should follow?

        • I booted into acronis mounted on a usb drive, it is super simple and can be used to clone a larger partition onto a smaller drive (as long as there is enough space on the smaller drive for the data)

      • Did it come with a SATA power or data cable (or both) or none?

        • +1

you will have to source a sata cable only one it comes with is the one connected to the drive already in bay.

        • +1

          SATA Data No
          SATA Power Yes

        • @UNFKNBLVBL:

Thanks, is possible to have both a 1TB HDD and a 2.5" SATA SSD in at the same time? There should be enough SATA ports on the motherboard, right?

          Thanks again.

        • @akib: yeah by memory there was 4 sata ports on board and there are 2 x 3.5 inch hard drive mounts + 1 2.5 inch mount

So I would think you can run 1x ssd, 2xHDD and the slim slot dvd drive

        • @UNFKNBLVBL: OK great, thank you for your answer.

  • I bought one about 6 months ago and am happy with it, the integrated wifi and bluetooth are handy additions that you probably wouldn't put in your own build

    • +2

Lol, somewhat related, I just found out that my main build from 2010 (ASUS P5Q Deluxe) has inbuilt bluetooth. Only took me 8 years.

  • +1

Or you could try this one, that has Dual Storage with 1TB 7200 rpm HDD + 128GB M.2 SSD:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Inspiron-Gaming-Desktop-Intel-Co…

Works out to be $1119.20 with discount. I am sure you could probably buy a 128GB SSD or larger for the $120 price difference, but this one has the convenience of not having to clone the existing HDD or re-install Windows.

  • How is their XPS tower different to this? Thanks guys!

    • Better value for $40 more. Slightly higher specs.

      • Which one is a better value you reckon? Thank you.

        • XPS. For $40 more after 20% discount.
2TB hard drive, supposedly better wifi card, smaller case, sdcard reader

        • @ruriruri: I will check it out, thank you

      • +1

Link the model, because as far as I can see the similarly priced ones have a GT 1030 and a GTX 1060 in them respectively.

That's not a good rig for gaming, but it's great as a workstation. It's also ridiculously overpriced.

EDIT: You're talking about the 1060 one it seems, which is $160 more @ $1680 after discount. The entry-level gaming box is the only one approaching decent value, and only if you desperately need a new desktop.

        • +1

Dell XPS 8930 Tower Desktop 8th Gen Core i7-8700 16GB RAM 256GB SSD NVIDIA 1070
          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/322949767594

        • @ruriruri: For $1800? No way

Even compared to the $999 XPS i7 model, that's basically charging you $800 for a 1070 and 8 GB of RAM. Crazy town.

      • I agree with @ruriruri

I have the Inpsirion I7 / 1070 and wish I got the XPS
2TB HD, and a quieter / modular case design + SD card reader on the front….

    • Not for gaming.

      • Why is that?

        • +1

The similarly priced one has a GT1030, which won't let you play any modern games at a satisfactory quality.

The next series of GPUs are in a few months, best to wait for those.

        • @jasswolf: Thanks for clarifying. I was quite surprised when @ruriruri brought up the 'better value' deal for $40. more

Apart from the GPU difference which I have a relatively good understanding of, what else makes XPS a better pc?

Does anyone own one? How do they compare in terms of ports/SSD readers etc? And which one is quieter?

          Thanks again!

        • +2

@7es7ash: If you desperately need a PC right now, buy the XPS with the GT 1030, then get a new video card when they come out.

Should work out to be $1600-$1700 total for a system that can spit out 1440p @ 120 fps, or 4k @ 60 fps. Today that system would cost you $2400.

The i7-8700 is not unlocked however, so you will have little in the way of an overclock going forward.

        • @jasswolf: a great tip! Much appreciated!

  • How os the fan noise on i7 8700 one? That's my main concern.

    • +1

dunno how you'd gauge it but I'd say pretty good, even when full blasting it's like it's numbed and not harsh. Quiet over all. Even when gaming don't notice it much.

    • +1

We have the XPS version of the i7 one and the fan noise is interesting. When it really kicks in I guess you could call it reasonably loud but the tone of it is very flat and not at all bothersome. It sounds like a pedestal fan sort of, there's no whine at all. Gaming noises mostly drown it out so you only notice in loading screens really, and it often doesn't turn up that high even in heavy graphics scenes.

      • I have i5 in HP case and you cannot hear it. Based on your comment i7 will make noise which worries me.

    • I installed a second 2TB drive on my I7 to up the storage (SSD for boot, 2TB 7200 RPM i had on hand (Added) for data and program files and 1TB that came with box for games)

In mine there is a distinct spinning hard drive amplified by casing… if I lift the casing up I don;t hear it so much

I don't know if it is just the extra drive I installed. I was in a silencio case before with that HDD and had no issues.

as per my note above, I would seriously consider the XPS for $40 more to get the 2TB drive and what looks like a quiter case… it is like 2.5% more.

  • Does the price include GST?

  • +1

Can't believe they're still selling gaming PCs in 2018 without SSD drives. lol.

  • +2

Be careful with these Inspiron desktops.
I bought the ryzen one last year and have been advocating it. Turns out, dell are dodgy and have given us unadvertised downgrades.

I have observed the following issues with my PC. Points 1 and 2 are false-advertising and backed by a source. Points 3, 4 I knew beforehand. Point 5 I didn't know before hand and it's quite annoying.

    1. They gave us an RX470, not a the advertised RX570
    2. The pci-e port is 8x, not 16x
      (source: https://www.dell.com/community/Desktops-General/DELL-Inspiri…)
    3. The PSU is the cheapest 450w psu they could find.
    4. You can't overclock at all, the bios is pretty limited.
    5. It's hard to upgrade the PSU, I had to physically cut the case to get it to fit.

Lesson learned, I shouldn't have been lazy, and I should have built my own.

    • Firstly, that's in regard to a different variant not the ones in this deal but I do take your first point and I would use as a case for either return or partial refund.

The rest I would take as subjective to future intent which going in I expected would be the case. If you're not planning on serious upgrades really is a good kit.

      • Yep, totally agree with all you've said.

I sold the 470 already (listed as a 470 with a bios flashed to 570) and moved on with life, because people weren't having much luck dealing with Dell, even with threats of "ACCC", etc.

        • Hello there, sorry to bother you but would you be able to tell me how I may check if I've a 470 or a 570 please?

  • GPU aside, the $999 option is an overpriced build when you consider the value of the Ryzen 1600 alongside the i5-8400.

Cannot wait for the flood of new silicon later this year, because these GPU and RAM prices are just insane. There should be a GTX 1070 and 16 GB of RAM in that system.

    • GPU and RAM prices are just insane

Hopefully GPU prices will come down soon as crypto mining isn't as profitible.

Idk about RAM though, but at least RAM is generally cheaper than high end GPUs lol

      • That's already happening, but if you're trying to build a gaming system that you have a 2nd monitor to multi-task on, you need 16 GB of RAM now, which currently goes for $280-$320. That's just madness.

Mining is already dropping off and moving to PoS, and the rest is just down to where the supply is going right now, so with the new GPUs mid-year, we'll see things normalise.

        • Oh wow, I totally missed this (RAM being that expensive!)
Thought it was like $10 / GB

        • @idonotknowwhy: Even that would be overpriced comapred to 18 months ago.

        • @jasswolf: Why is it happening? I can't find a solid answer. People are blaming smartphones for having more RAM / more sales, but I don't buy it.
I hope I don't need to upgrade my RAM in the forseable future…
7d2d is my most RAM-heavy game and only seems to use up to abotu 10GB, so should be okay for now.

        • Rams is expensive due to the lack of facilities to pump more rams into the market according to Samsung. They are expected to have a new production facility next year

GPU is due to mining. 580 is over 500 AUD. Should be 399.99

          Bad times for pc gamers.

        • -1

@ChickenAdobo: it's due to mining and all things computing eating up all the silicon supply, and those facilities were built last year.

They have been ramping up production, and the market will be start to be flooded mid-year. Google is your friend.

        • +1

          @ChickenAdobo:

GPU is due to mining. 580 is over 500 AUD. Should be 399.99

Sweet! I've got an RX580 I'm not using. Bought it for $380 ages ago. Maybe I can sell it for like $380 lol.

@jasswolf: Miners don't use that much RAM though.

        • +1

@idonotknowwhy: RAM prices are high because of an increased demand for DDR4 from smartphone manufacturers and the fact that one of the manufacturing plants burnt down, leading to a decrease in supply.

        • @idonotknowwhy: You can CPU mine too, and all these parts use the same plants for the silicon.

        • @jasswolf: No, CPU mining is minor compared to GPU mining.
The price of RAM has nothing to do with mining, it was already hugely overpriced (vs a few years ago) before the mining boom!

Blaming it on miners is just witch hunting!

        • @Namesareapain: I was just adding to the list of reasons, as well as pointing out that the underpinning materials are all hoovered up and produced by the same handful of plants. Relax.

  • pulled the pin on this Dell Inspiron 5680 i5-8400, 8GB, 1TB, GTX 1060 6GB $999.20, Estimated delivery Friday, Apr 27, 2018 - Wednesday, Jun 6, 2018
    UP to 2 months?

Wondering what others were quoted, if this just standard Dell quoted delivery times, but really takes a week?

    • I ordered mine on the 28th of March (previous deal), estimated delivery date is 17/4 and if I track it online it only shows up as 'confirmed'.

      • +1

I ordered mine on the same date - got it last Friday. Shouldn't be too long for you!

        • Mine finally updated to 'in transit to local hub' - estimated delivery date hasn't changed. Does that mean it's on its way from Malaysia, or that it's arrived in Australia?

        • @akib: got mine today, ordered 10/04 arrived 24/04
Hope that helps anyone else with timings.

Real men build their own computer from parts they have researched and found appropriate to their needs. It really isn't very difficult. From experience, the only troublesome part can be setting up the BIOS.

A 1 'Terrorbite' internal hard disk is only sufficient for the needs of web surfers and streamers. My mostly lossless music collection is around 8 TB in size.

    • +1

Not everyone has an 8TB music collection they have to store on their PC. Sure, 1TB isn't enough for you, but for most people, even gamers, it's sufficient.

      • not really. not these days anyways. 2tb probably more acceptable.

  • Planning to get one of these. Anyone confirmed for dell NVME works?

  • Got this one and just sending it back.
Windows keeps disabling the nVidia card and that renders the entire screen not only slow but also full of red dots.
Support was unable to fix it for the last 3 weeks.
