Is that pitchforks I hear being sharpened?….

    • +1

It most certainly …. spam your family and friends, to give then $10 credit each , which can only be used $5 at a time!

I like the way $100 is brandished constantly throughout the ad.

      • +4

-note all items will be 5 dollars more thought the month of jan /sarcasm

        • +6

Anyone who gives this a positive clearly hasn't understood the promotion.

        • hmmm…not sure you have understood the promotion…..
No-one has to spam anybody, if you choose to email someone, they will get $100 on their account. They can only use that credit in $5 increments.

        • •Redeemable in $5 increments, one redemption per order

        • yep..

      • adjusted the title to try and reflect this

      • +4

You'd have to buy 20 days worth to get that $100 value. COTD are lucky if I can find 1 item per month that is worth buying from them :-D

  • +2

    Terrible spam

    • +1

      spam my frends no thanks

  • +5

Too many catch's… nothing but a money making scheme from cotd

    • +1

youre right, its a terrible deal, but isnt every type of marketing essentially a money making scheme?

  • +1

    bad idea

  • +5

Just how bad a reputation do these guys want to build? I'm at the point where I will now verbally tell people about them.

  • Just make up a new hotmail account and send the offer to yourself. Thats what I just did.

    • Just make up a new hotmail account and send the offer to yourself. Thats what I just did.

      Is it worth the hassle?

Have you honestly looked at a product on COTD and said to yourself, "if only that product with shipping was $5 less, then I'd buy it" ??

I'll eat my hat if you have!!

      • +1

You're right but I already had a spare hotmail account for spam and signups so it wasn't much of a bother. I haven't bought from catchoftheday for over a year but you never know a miracle could happen and they could put a decent deal up.

        • never know a miracle could happen

Ok, fair enough….."stranger things have happened at sea".

      • +7

I was young and naive in those days!

  • +3

Free …. "$100 Catch Credit" … just how misleading is that webpage heading!??

And here we were thinking COTD may turn a new leaf for 2011…..not to be clearly.

    • +3

The new years resolutions must be, confuse and destroy!

      • -1

I'm not sure what is confusing…..it is $100 credit, that must be taken in $5 increments…..

        • The new years resolution being "confuse and destroy"

i didnt expect you to get it Andy, want to analyse further?

        • sorry mik, meant to reply to ash

        • oops sorry :) war paint must have slipped on the keyboard hehe

I’m not sure what is confusing…..it is $100 credit, that must be taken in $5 increments…..

Well, "$100 Free credit" is a very different proposition to "$5 off 20 purchases over the next 31 days".

You shouldn't need to read the fine print to discover thats what "$100 free credit" is refering to.

Please retract your positive without delay!! :)

        • so…how much credit is it all together?

        • so…how much credit is it all together?

No ones getting $100 credit! No one!

        • -2

if you send me the email, I will get $100 credit. I cannot use the whole $100 dollars in one transaction, however, I can use it in $5 increments. If I choose to buy something from cotd today, it will be $5 cheaper than yesterday….we can check the pricing cos they've got the same stuff on sale today as yesterday.

          I'm $5 up.

You presumably are smart enough to know that they wouldn't be giving away $100 credit in one hit?

        • +5

Hey, I can get you a great deal on brand new cars. $5000 off! *

          *Limit $1 off per purchase

        • +3

a dollar is always better in my pocket than somebody else's….

    • +1

Totally agree this is very misleaing

  • Damn them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • +12

Dear Mods, if you are going to edit the title, please use correct spelling. That way I don't look like a clown.

    • lol

    • +3

      Ozbargain moment of 2011 :D

    • eh sorry :( Which word did i spell wrong? i think i'm up to 3 or 4 title changes from reports.

  • +4

Wow. I knew CotD was bad but now they're just terrible.

    • At least they aren't Zazz yet…

  • +1

you're kidding, right??? $5 increments are often not enough to cover shipment!

    • +2

The prices will go up in $5 increments now lol

      • +3

Mikinoz, I've duly noted you have been very restrained in giving NEG's lately….disapproving comments, but no NEGs! Is your minus button broken??!

        • lol well noted Ash, dont really bother voting anymore its just not as fun :)

  • Such a terrible promotion!

  • +1

20 catchs in fine print, not $100, not even for yourself.

  • +1

Not what I'd consider much of a promo!

  • +1

Nothing short of pathetic. Spam & email fishing.

  • Here are some email addresses for you to spam:

    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]

As you can see I got lazy after making 3 email addresses. Don't think it's worth the trouble at all.

At most the $5 will cover the cost of postage, that's all about it.

    • but….only the owners of those addresses will get the credit….

(unless you're secretly planning some big buys)….

      • Doesn't the spammer get the $100 credit when he finishes sending off the emails?

        • nope……

        • wow, that's lame. Glad I didn't spend too much of my time making more email addresses.

        • I'd guess you're not the only one who has made that mistake…

  • Why the post is gone ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    • +3

Because it's attracted too many neg votes, meaning it's fallen off the New Deals page and most people's preferences by default, hide the deal when it falls under x amount of votes.

    • click "show all comments"

  • So where to find those hidden deals, sometimes may be good.

  • +1

    To those crying spam….

If you send the email to one person…..you get nothing
send the email to 100 people…. you get nothing

The only people that get the credit are the people you send the email to, if they choose to join cotd, or are already members

Therefore, unless you know someone who would use it, don't send anyone an email…then nobody gets anything and life goes on.

For those who want the credit, you have to create an email address for yourself, and send yourself an email

clearly, for this deal, there is a "what's in it for me?" issue…..

  • +1

I wouldn't even expect this sort of rubbish from BigW Entertainment.

  • Filthy tactics didn't think they were that desperate.

  • makes this
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/37058

now $5 cheaper….assuming you have the credit

  • POS

  • +1

The wording and stringent conditions make this a really poor promotion from catch. I might use it if there was something I would have purchased anyway, but it won't make me buy something that I wouldn't have.

It seems like COTD is more interested in attracting new customers than retaining their existing ones, with a promo like this.

    • it applies to existing customers….

  • +1

    what a stupid promotion.

  • +2

i will vote neg coz i just hate COTD.

  • +2

Damn, I got suckered in before I fully understood the conditions and lack of value. Not before I spammed some friends, sorry to them.

CoTD has lost it's 'catch' part these last months. The last bad one was a 'Band Hero' for DS on sale for them for $49.95 with a RRP of $90. Specially when the RRP was $29.95 and EBGame had it on sale for $14.97.

  • +2

catch of the day isn't really offering a catch of the day anymore… it's pretty much a pile-of-junk-a-day-rehashed-from-previous-days

this "promotion" is just a desperate attempt to grab more customers to sustain themselves

    • The funny thing is, even though COTD has lost a lot of respect from the Ozbargain community, i'd say most of us would still be suckered to go back there and line up to buy something, no matter how slim the chances of actually even logging on and sucessfully ordering the item.

If they wanted to sustain themselves, they could always convert to a normal online shopping site like TopBuy. They'd probably make just as much from doing that too.

      • I have been to the COTD retail outlet and it's like an oversized $2 shop full of poor quality stock, they could never be a normal online site.

  • +1

This post is a good reason why COTD has decided to leave OzBargain permanently. There's no good reason IMO to neg this deal. Sure, it sucks having to use this in $5 portions but it will still save a chunk of the postage fees. Who cares if it's a promo to get more customers? No one loses.

    Bring on the negs.

    • +4

Are you kidding? NONE of us can benefit from it, only people we know.

      As per the conditions:

•Can't use it on yourself, its all about giving

Why should we vote up something that none of us can benefit from, and in the mean time handing over friends & relatives email addresses so they can receive advertising in their inbox. Yeah awesome, top deal.

And before you suggest signing up with a new email account to benefit - it's against the terms & conditions, and is exactly the reason why everyone thinks this is a joke.

      • +3

You could get a friend who already has a COTD account to gift it to you. A bit too much effort for 5 bucks I agree, but it will please some.

I'm not saying this post is worth 50 +ve votes. I'm saying it's not worth 24 negs.

    • the whole thing is deceitful, wrapped in a candy wrapper to make it look sweet.

big and bold 100 dollars for nothing…
…but its not actually for you…
…and you'd actually have to buy 20 things to get the 100 dollars off…
      …and you've only got a month to use it…

I think the community issue is that they are making it out to be something big and fantastic, where as its not really… why not just offer 5 bux off for the month of jan, which is what it actually is…well actually not even that, as its per order not per item! do they offer combined postage? if so, then your basically kissing that goodbye…

i think most bargain hunters are off a decent amount of cash, saving a few dollars here and there is fine for tight r's, (heck better in my pocket than someone elses) but its the big catches we want!

      • Wisc says … but its the big catches we want!

Dont talk for me please - I am old enough to make up my own mind what a deal is for me. For you sure that's your choice.

As for many other members here, If its not for you and in my case not for me, then make a comment just move on.

I dont buy from COTD but it's this MOB thing that you have to vote negative on anything you dont like, this maybe a deal for some.

Did any think of the fact, that your negative votes hides the deal, so most will never see your comments

Your comments are not what I am talking about, it's the negative vote. The post already had some, which gives a warning to many, so whats the advantage of burying it. You are not warning anyone when that happens

We originally set up rules for negative voting, we relaxed policing those to see if the community had enough sense to user the negative vote sensibly, not to impose their personal bias on a deal, from what I have read here today this may have been a mistake

BTW if you really want this $5 its easy to set up another email account, send it to yourself and open a new account with COTD in name of your spouse, siblings or children.

        • +1

someone said ealier it was against their T&C's to set up another account and post it to yourself.

I was mearly stating why i believed some people had an issue with the tactics.. hence the "i think the community issue…"
i guess i could have said "summarising the above some peoples issue with this is…" but didnt think id need to be that specific.

i never negged it cause it was still 5 bux off, however, i think the way it was advertised was a bit deceptive…

        • Wisc - agree

I should have made two posts - including your minor comment in my major rant wasn't fair - apologies. It was an issue of semantics nothing more and not even worth mentioning.

My point on sending to others you know - is that their T&C's dont say that you cant send to family members so doing this would be legitimate and addressed the issue some have about not being able to use it themselves

Your comments were legit, like many others here, AND while making those comments you had the presence of mind not to hide this deal from others to whom it might be of interest even with its "failings"

          cheers and apologies again.

  • Well I sent my boyfriend the credit and got him to buy me the Energizer xp8000 saving $5 in postage, so there is at least one COTD member who benefited from it!

  • What a disgusting way to to get more customers to COTD.

Haven't seen a "catch" on the site for so long I don't remember the last good deal with decent stock.

  • +1

Heheh. A free disposable toothbrush gets the votes, but $5 off your next 20 COTD purchases gets neg'd to hell.
    I love OzBargain. :)

  • +1

Feel like I am being the catch of the day

  • Not totally FREE!
    20 x $5 not 1 x $100
This is like SCAM of the day!

  • dis deal is shoooooo jenerous

  • I don't like this marketing at all.

  • this deal is terrible.

  • Terrible deal. Can't even use it yourself. Pure recruitment.

    • Even when you purchase items from COTD, 95% of the time they don't even send it to you. Amazed that they're still going and haven't been hit by the dept of fair trading yet.
