Refurbished and T-Mobile branded but I believe it is the same hardware as ASUS RT-AC68U and seems a great value for money.

This is an awesome machine - runs ASUS Merlin perfectly

  • +4

Good deal, I am going to grab one myself to flash to an Asus RT-AC68U.
Here are the steps to flash it, I think this link has been given before…
    http://www.bayareatechpros.com/ac1900-to-ac68u/
And a good Youtube clip that may help some to navigate the instructions above…
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5KcCf3IpEY

  • Rt68u is easy to flash with Merlin. Have done it a few times.
Also now supports Asus mesh system, not sure how good it is but is one of the new features with the latest software.
I may grab one as a 2nd unit and flash it and use as mesh downstairs.

    • Access point is still better than Mesh, IMO. I have two AC68Us and just grabbed one of these. Planning to link them all up with CAT6.

      • Agreed, just put in the wiring also for this purpose.

Be aware of the new firmware (released yesterday) 3.0.0.4.384_20624, which removes Mesh function from AC1900 routers.

      • Oh so we can use this like a google mesh kind of setup?

      • Is asus discontinuing support for 68u or is it temporary?

      • Yep. See here: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/rt-ac68u-new-firmware-3-0-…

Support isn't being discontinued, but at this stage it looks like ASUS are trying to stop this particular T-Mobile branded model being used with their mesh tech.

      • Hmm I'm using 384.4 firmware with Merlin and Ai mesh is still showing on the phone app. But mine is a genuine Rt68u not the t-mobile one.
AI mesh is newish so maybe there are issues across individual models with discrete differences.

        • That link I posted has people saying exactly that.
Genuine 68u's aren't affected. It's only the AC1900 branded ones that are having the AI-Mesh feature stripped out.

        • @SuiCid3:
Yes but it's a bit strange ad the prior version I had an ai mesh link on the webui as well. Maybe I need to look closer.
Interesting that Asus have put it in as a feature rather than onlybrolling out to new products. Commendable really.

    • I'm interested in doing some more advanced changes to the router, particularly through CFE. I've tried to google but had not much luck in finding info. Can anyone help with following or a link to a guide?
      -Upping transmission power
      -Exposing non US channels
There looks to be options for this in the online CFE editor but no explanations or guide on settings.

  • Cheers, grabbed one!

  • Anyone had to go through RMA on one of these. I bought a unit in a previous deal and while it is working the LED on/off light stopped working. The power supply brick has some sort of sticky sandy/gritty type material oozing out at the edges.

Everything is working so I am reluctant to send it to the US and dont even know if it is covered by warranty since I flashed it to convert it to to AC68U and currently running Merlin.

Take note that this version is limited to 800MHz and not 1GHz as stated in the description.

    • Even after flashing to rt-ac68u firmware?

      • +1

        Yes, even after flashing.
There are ways to overclock it to 1GHz, but that's up to you if you want to risk it or not.

    • Yes, I received mine yesterday and confirm that is 800Mhz.

It even came with previous user settings which prevented me from logging in with default user id and password.

  • Benefits of Merlin and AI Mesh?

    • Repurpose older AI-Mesh compatible routers, which can normally be found on the cheap (such as this post).

      • Does Merlin support Mesh and if not is there a plan to do so in future?

  • Anyone know what type of power supply this uses so I can purchase an Australian plug?

    • It comes with US plug. you will need to get AU plug for it.

      • AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz)
        DC Output : 19 V with max. 1.75 A current
So you will need a power pack that puts out 19V and approx 2a
*The original may be a scaleable supply so just need an adaptor
BUT read the specs on the power supply plug carefully

  • Can someone please let me know if it will work fine without flashing or changing it into Asus AC68U? Planning to just use this by itself and not connecting to a second access point.

    • Past comments on Ozb say that yes it works, however it's a bit crap and lacks the features that the Asus firmware has.

      • i m not too technical but what features u mean?. My usage is streaming video on several devices and would also like some level of security in terms of someone trying to acess the devices. would this router without flashing would do that ?

        • Yes it should be fine for that.
