A few are already covered here.

    • Some of them even in title, I thought that’s not allowed

  • I am after a PCle NVMe SSD, does that means m2 ssd? Gonna install in the dell 27” 7000 aio.
    Thanks

      • Thanks for the info mate

I think you mean SATA is the common interface for 2.5" drives. M.2 form factor drives can also use a SATA connection, which if what makes it important to be sure that you get the right kind of m.2 drive that suits your system.

Ssd is solid state drive. It can come in many form factors and with different interfaces.

Sorry Purec but you are not helping.

        SSD is the product category.
M.2 is the form factor, a physical shape of the SSD and also commonly used as the name of the connecting plug and socket.
NVMe is the device interface and protocol, a computing standard and language used between the SSD and the PC.
PCIe is the bus, an electrical specification for connecting peripherals.

Dell's product page for the Inspiron 27" 7000 series shows

Dual Drive with 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD + 1TB 5400 RPM HDD

as standard, unless edw0000000 has purchased a different configuration. It is unclear what s/he is trying to do with another M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. Does the Dell 7000 mainboard have two M.2 NVMe PCIe sockets?

        • They might want to upgrade it to a bigger SSD

        • I got this one which doesn’t have a ssd

        • @edw0000000: The video given in that post shows an M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD (Plextor PX-256M8PeG) being added to the Dell, so I think this is the type of SSD yours can use.

M.2 SSDs usually connect to PCs in four ways. (1) Via PCIe circuit talking NVMe, (2) via SATA circuit talking AHCI, (3) via a PCIe adapter card, and (4) via an M.2 to USB external enclosure. You want (1). The Sandisk X300s in this post is an M.2 AHCI SATA SSD.

I cannot find any reference to your Dell's M.2 supporting AHCI SATA, so I cannot tell for certain whether or not the Sandisk X300s will work. But this Dell M.2 FAQ says

If a Dell system’s M.2 connector supports NVME there will usually be backwards compatibility with M.2 SATA drives

          Note the word usually.

@alvian: thanks a lot, so I better to buy a m2 NVMe pcie to be safe.

    • PC Case Gear has some for sale, 256GB NVMe for $139. I'm not sure about the ADATA brand, though, althogh PCG normally sells good quality stuff.

      • In the end I bought the Samsung 960 evo for $167 from Futu during lunch time, thanks anyway

        • The 960 evo is better than the ADATA. Even though it cost more, if you can spare the cash, you won't regret it.

How does the Intel 360gb perform?
Seems really cheap… Or is it just really old?

    • according to intel website this 360gb variant is way way slower in 4KB Write, I mean really bad :(

      • +2

The Intel 535 are crap, I have one. They have high write amplification.

        I won’t buy another.

        • For a ps4? Which would be best

        • @somm:

I do not know anything about PS4 but I would buy a Samsung EVO

        • @SamR: got a evo 750 for pc that's good

  • Looking to upgrade a 2011 Macbook pro to an SSD, any recommendations on a which drive would be best. I am a big fan of Samsung Evo series. How does the Crucial compare? Lookings for solid and reliable in this case and probably going to upgrade the ram as well.

    • I have a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina 2.7Ghz i7 and I have the 1TB Samsung EVO in it. It runs beautifully and hasn't missed a beat. It's still a very fast laptop and I have no plans to upgrade it :) SSD is a great new lease on life for older hardware.

The Samsung Evo and Crucial MX300/MX500 are TLC drives so have the shortest lifespan of the SSD technologies

      https://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/everything-you-need-to-kno…

      • Lifespan lol.

      • +3

They aren't standard TLC drives - they have 3D NAND which is a lot different to planar TLC drives.
They are also faster and don't degrade as quick as planar TLC.

Have a look at Tech sites like Anandtech, Toms Hardware, etc

  • Ugh, guys, should I do it, should I buy a 2TB ssd?

Id remove my 4TB HDD, and never have to hear that (profanity) spin up. I will be free.

It's a lot of money tho hmmmmm. for all I know next year it could be down to $300

  • The cheapest price I can find in the market.

Couldn't the same be said for most PC components every time one of these 20% sales is on?

I'm not sure why a post was made to specifically highlight these items.

    • That's probably true, but personally I have no problem at all with anyone highlighting what they think are the most notable items from a general sale, in fact I tend to find it quite helpful.

      • That's the thing they, are they even worth highlighting? Or are they just 20% off RRP? Which more often than not usually means ~10% off with price-jacking.

    • Couldn't the same be said for most PC components every time one of these 20% sales is on?

Not necessarily - especially in tech.
Even after 20% some items (and stores) are still more expensive than buying at MSY, uMart etc

  • Anybody have any recommendations for which brand of HDD and enclosure to connect to an Xbox One?

  • can the x300 m.2 be used on x79 platform with my 3930k?

    • Check the MB manual. You need to check that it has an M.2 connector, it can accept the length of the SSD, and its M.2 uses SATA AHCI.

  • Thanks mate, picked up a 1TB MX500 I had been eyeing off for a while.

    • Got mine today, did you find the SSD was loose in its packaging?

      • Still waiting for mine - Aus Post says it should arrive Monday.

        • Mine seems to be working but the plastic cradling the SSD needs some work

  • If you’re after more than one of these you may end up buying cheaper at some other retailers. Check out http://au.pcpartpicker.com which aggregates a bunch of retailers.
