These laptops are excellent value. The keyboard in particular is very nice to use… doesn't feel cheap like most others at this price point.

    • Keyboard is the weak point if you like a standard layout.

  • I see it priced as $1,039 inc GST and delivery with the coupon DEALS on their site.

    • Link please? I'm guessing you're looking at the i5?

If it doesn't show, I found it through clicking their "It's Business Time" icon and found their range.

        • +5

Your link is to the i5. This deal is for the i7.

        • +1

Oh sorry! Got too excited about how cheap they are.

        • +6

          @artich0ke:

Got too excited about how cheap they are.

Yeah right, you got excited because you saw Tightarse.

    M.2 PCIe SSD ✔️
    2.5" Bay for SSD/HDD ✔️

Stick a 1TB SSD in as your Data drive and this will run like a beast! RX550 isn't bad for some mid-gaming too.

    • really this can do some light gaming too?

      • Yeah it'll do some light gaming. The 2GB can be a bit of a bottleneck, but it'll still do well.

    • with the specs it's running, you can definitely do light gaming but if you are doing much more extreme tasks, seems like the laptop isn't very good with thermals when you stress the machine under load

      https://www.notebookcheck.net/ThinkPad-E480-i5-8250U-RX-550-…

  • How is build quality?

    • +8

Components are decent for the price.

The 2 downsides I see are heat management and noise - it gets far too hot for my liking - see temp section: https://www.notebookcheck.net/ThinkPad-E480-i5-8250U-RX-550-…

      • +3

Awesome specs for the price, shame about the heating issues reported in that review. Seems to be an issue with a lot of 8th gen laptops at the moment.

      • I have neither of this two problems.

      • +1

Thanks for this warning, rules it out for me

    • +5

If you want excellent build quality you'll have to step up from the E-series to the T-series.

This is good for the price.

Another big plus for me is the matte screen. I hate the fashion for mirrored glossy screens - if I'd wanted a mirror, I'd have bought one!

    • I got one and had to return it. There was a rattling noise from CPU fan I think.

  • How does this compare to the Acer:

    • +3

      This is Thinkpad

      Not to mention that's Acer

  • How difficult to upgrade to 16gb ram? Or is there any deal with i7, 16gb ram

    • $105 extra. you can select options in the customize menu

    • Thinking the same. I need 16gb to do some virtualization.

Thank deathjr, will look for the customized option.

If this is coming from overseas, is it subject for custom tax since it is over 1k ?

      • Laptops sold by Lenovo Australia are often shipped from overseas, but the GST is collected up-front, so there's no worries with Customs.

If you buy from an Australian seller, and see "Includes GST" next to the price, you should never get hit by any additional taxes.

        • thanks for the tip on what i nee to look for so I know if already taxed or not.

  • +1

I have an E450 with an R7 260m (IIRC), im guessing an RX550 is just as useless as a light gaming (Warframe) GPU?

    • Yes and the E460 case gets really hot (70 degrees) when gaming. This laptop is for light usage like word processing and Internet.

      • Another question; does this support a 2.5" drive in addition to the PCIe drive, and does it come with the mounting hardware if ordered without that drive installed?

        • Unsure about the mounting kit, but it takes a 2.5" drive.

        • @Clear: chewed chewing gum does the trick

      • +6

Light usage, word processing, internet. i7 cpu.

        Something doesn't add up.

  • I am trying to customized it by adding additional memory and see how it will go with the coupon code.

I went to check out and I'm at the payment section where it was asking me to input the credit card number or paypal details but i missed where to input the coupon code.

Curious also if I need to pay extra for custom tax since it is over 1k ?

    • Laptops sold by Lenovo Australia are often shipped from overseas, but the GST is collected up-front, so there's no worries with Customs.

    link not working?

    • for me too the link is not working

  • The specs look great!
I would personally opt for a 16GB RAM option.

  • +2

    don't think its available anymore
link doesn't work.. but was working 20 minutes ago

  • Link does not work. I was trying to order and just pass the custumization to add 8GB and at checkout as I could not find where to input the coupon code then —-> " Unfortunately ThinkPad E480 was removed from your cart as it is no longer available. "

    • Please see note in bold in OP…

Link not working as of 10:11am. Lenovo advised will be up again within 30-45 minutes. Sorry!

      • Thanks TA.

TA, can you confirm if there is additional payment required to customs since it is more than 1k ?

        • Isn’t this Lenovo Australia? Don’t need to worry about customs since you’ll be paying gst anyway.

        • The price is already GST inclusive, so no :)

        • +1

          @tightarse: Tnx champ

    • I can't figure out where to input the coupon code either? I went all the way to Review and Checkout, which I had to enter my CC details.

      • Actually I found where to enter it. Follow the link in this bargain, then View Current models, Customise, go through all the configuration then Add to Cart. In the top right there will be the option to enter the eCoupon. Came out $814 in savings, which is a bargain!

        • doesnt work for me still.

  • Intel Gen7 i7-8550U Quad Core CPU?

    • the hexacores are not available with the U iterations. Just go for the i5s.

      • Not the cores. Description says Gen7 but has a Gen8 model number

  • the page is not found

  • +1

can anyone tell why does it still have USB2.0 port?

    • +2

USB 2.0 allows more devices to be used (and most don't need the high bandwidth USB 3.0 provides) by maintaining open PCI-E lanes for other peripherals. USB 3.0 requires a large amount of bandwidth, which can congest existing PCI-E lanes.

The other big factor is cost.

    • +1

Legacy devices e.g. some old glucose monitors require USB 2.0 and will not work with USB 3.0 (trust me I've tried). As well as what alejcho said.

  • Is the i7 cpu and rx550 worth $185 over the i5-8250 version with intel 620uhd?

    • +1

For the specs, yes - that's good value for money. However it looks like the i5 using integrated graphics has far better temperatures. If you don't intend to game or push the processor hard, maybe the cheaper model is the better option.

      • Yeah, temp doesn't both me as much as battery life. I think the 620 is much more power efficient than discreet cards.

  • Nice!!!
Any chance of showing some arse for a E570P deal??

  • I spoke with customer rep via chat regarding estimate delivery to Sydney :

3 weeks shipping (from china) + delivery approximately 5-7 business days after your order has shipped = roughly 4 weeks (WoW !!!)

Maybe i8 is already out by the time this arrive :-)

  • The price is increase to $1209?

  • +1

To upgrade from 256gb to 500gb SSD is an extra $200. Expensive.
If I upgrade the SSD myself will the Lenovo guarantee still be valid?

  • +1

Stellar laptop with good price to performance ratio. Battery life is however not the greatest and temperatures with an AMD GPU in use seem to really climb upto uncomfortable levels so keep that in mind. https://www.notebookcheck.net/ThinkPad-E480-i5-8250U-RX-550-…

    • +3

From when did Thinkpad "E" series become a hot deal for $1085 (Lenovo regular prices are highly inflated)

I would think the E480 would be a hot deal for $885 considering it is a very recently released 2108 model.

In the past highend E series with similar specs have gone on sale for anywhere between $720 to $835
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/lenovo-thinkpad-e470

Many people seem to think that ALL "Thinkpads" are created equal but they are not.
If you need the "REAL" Thinkpad Build quality you have to get only the T series or the Carbon X series.

    • +2

You're gonna have to link us some specifics if you want to start saying it's not a good deal.

      • Lenovo Thinkpad E470, Intel Core i7-7500U 8GB 256GB SSD 940MX (2GB VRAM) $719.20
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/330841

I hope Lenovo sales staff are NOT up voting this tread as I wonder how paying $366 more (<= $1085 - $719) makes this a popular deal ? Remember your paying a staggering 50% more ($719/$366)

        • +2

$366 more for a faster PCIe SSD, faster CPU, significantly better graphics and the addition of USB-C to name a few.

        • -1

          @Clear:

Well the specifications and the performance were good at that time for a 2017 model and remember the price is also the 2017 price and not the end of model liquidation price.

Newer models comes with slightly better specifications but would it make sence to Pay 50% more.

          Example:
The 2019 E490 which will be released next year and would come with a newer generation i7 processor and few other minor improvements. But would this incremental improvements justify a 50% price increase?

          Would a sensible person pay 50% more that is $1627 ($1085 + 0.5*$1085) for the 2019 model?

Would you pay 50% more for a Galaxy S9 than the Galaxy S8 price. Yes the S9 comes with a better processor but ……

My point is the new model with a slightly increased specs does NOT warrant a 50% price increase.

  • Which one is better laptop for gaming?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/366972

    • The Acer Nitro 5 is a better laptop if gaming is the main intended purpose.

  • Just got this on the previous deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/362873 (was lucky to get both DEALS and double RAM for free). Although mine is the i5 and onboard graphics version, initial thoughts are positive. Good specs for the price and feels like solid build quality while also being light (<2kg). No real issues with heat although it does get warm under heavy use and can imagine that it would heat up quite a bit with the i7 and RX550 GPU.

As for delivery times, got mine in 8 days (WA).

  • Onsite warranty… how does that work… considering its China base

    • +5

      Lol what? You're comparing:

      Intel Core i7-7500U & 940MX

      with 8th Gen i7-8550U & AMD RX550

Of course there's going to be a difference, it's new tech. Also, that was a price error which they honoured, not comparable. Also, it's a whole different model.

E580 user here, and I believe the E480 is the similar in this respect.

Be aware that the lid does show up oils from fingerprints extremely easily. Even after touching with recently washed hands, it can appear quite grubby.

My solution was to purchase vinyl wrapping for the exterior lid. Around $15 from eBay, and I found it easy to apply with a craft blade to cut the excess. The added scratch protection is a bonus. http://imgur.com/a/FbdB8

    • Very nice wrap!

  • Take note that the delivery is 2-3 weeks to ship from china plus 5-7 business day deliver.

I called to get more details and i was told that for this laptop will take 2-3 weeks to ship to Aus from China plus 6-7 days delivery.

If you add customization, it will take longer.

I ask why some laptop with same model takes longer than the others listed on their website.

There is a difference in the item code, some are already in Australia why it only takes 2 days shipping llus 5 days delivery and those coming from china takes 2-3weeks to ship plus 5-7 working days delivery.

  • Just doesnt work for me, keeps coming up with invalid code. Even tried going through everything and keeping it in cart and clicking on cashrewards again and putting code and still no cigar…

Coupon code is not valid for the current cart. Please input a valid one.

    • Definitely still working. Just tested it.

      • strange, it didnt work for me yesterday and i spoke to the lenovo staff and they said it had expired the day before but they can go ahead and still accept the same price if i order through them.

        • The code does not work.

Ask lenovo rep if they can price match.

The advantage is you can pick the e480 with 2 day shipping (pre-configured / ready to ship in Australia).

        • @atlinus:

Yeah thats what i did, but i didnt know about the 2 day shipping option, that would have been handy as i go overseas in a couple of weeks.
