The game itself is not really the greatest experience you will have by a long shot. But the stuff you get in the collectors edition is beautiful

They have some 10 day trial just like others but no I don't think it's free to play completely. Otherwise they'd have to introduce serious micropayment methods.
The game is free to play for tier 1, the last time I read. And it's very popular for the PVP.
