Hi all
Just wondering if there was a well performing cheap tablet around these days - something less than $100 ideally? It’s just for our son to use on long trips etc, doesn’t need to be an iPad but I guess I could look at a second hand one/mini maybe? Either that or an android around 8 inches I guess? Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks. No issues side loading stuff - but are there any limitations going this route va a full android tablet like a Lenovo tab 4? I guess it’s 60 usd, then add delivery to Australia it’s probablh more like $100-120 aud? 1.5gb of ram didn’t look that flash…
Yeah, there's limitations, definitely read up on it. Basically, Amazon did away with a lot of the Google part of Android, so doing Google related things can be a pain (such as managing Google accounts on the device). The basic framework is still there…it has to be, else it wouldn't run Android apps.
We've got three kids, they each have a fire tablet as does my wife. Wife mainly watches Kodi and Netflix, kids mainly watch Youtube and Netflix, with a few apps here and there. Storage is a bit limited, but if I put something different on each kids' tablet they can take turns on a long car trip.
Works for us. For a once-off purchase that you'd have a hassle with shipping, I might be willing to pay a bit more for something local. Just make sure it's a decent brand. If you're going to cheap out and get a no-name from overseas, take a closer look at the fire.
It will be kids only, so as long as it can play Netflix, YouTube, and the normal kids apps through google
Play then it will be fine. Also, I thought they are expandable memory?
Might be a bit over budget but the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7" is really good for kids, it has the kids mode which means you can set apps on it and they can't go anywhere else on the tablet. My almost 3 year old loves when we give it to him, just gives us a bit of a break sometimes.
Also, got a case with handles for it, as he always had an issue accidentally pushing buttons.
Has gone down to $120 before.
Will have a look. A kids mode would be handy!
It also has some other Samsung kids apps like a hair cut simulator thing, that my son loves, it also helps convince him to get a haircut.
EDit: Also has an MicroSD card slot, so good to expand the storage for long trips with no internet.
THANks, was looking at this. Wondering if it’s worth the extra for a P8.
At that price point, look at this
I can't vouch for this tablet specifically, but Lenovo makes some good stuff. Otherwise, as others have suggested, consider your budget and you might be able to get a bit more bang for your buck.
I liked the price but was dubious about the 1gb..
As ever, depends what you're using it for and what your expectations are. You'll almost certainly need to pick up a microSD (or whatever it takes) for additional storage though.
I had so far been thinking either a Lenovo tab 4 8 inch which is $140 from the good guys or maybe try and get a Lenovo P8 deal through gearbest which might be about $170-80, or a second hand iPad mini which will probably be about $200 but I really want a gen 3 or 4.
Anything yet? I'm looking for one ATM and would be curious in what you ended up getting and whether it was decent :)
OP what did you end up with? I'm in the same boat. Trying to find a cheap tab for my 2 year old so he stops using my iPad Pro :)
Nothing yet, will probably get a P8 when they drop down in price a bit. Seems to be the go unless you stick with IOS
I am thinking of buying this for a friend who just needs a lightweight laptop alternative for email, YouTube, document scanning and some word processing

But it's much harder now to find one.

Currently there's a used Fire HD 8 32GB for under $60USD. You'd have to figure out how to get it from the US to Australia. Bit of a risk buying a used one, but out of the 6+ ones I've bought only one has had any real issues (and it just locks up a couple times a day, still usable, will eventually replace under warranty when it's convenient). Most are used by our kids and they can take some abuse.
You need to be at least a little tech savvy to get Google Play Store installed (if you're not comfortable sideloading an apk on android, then maybe this isn't for you). You need Google Play if you want to run Google apps (such as Hangouts, Gmail, etc.) or use apps you've already paid for on Google Play. Amazon has their own app store and has pretty much everything you'd want.
