  • It's not 4.8" it's 8"…

Or you have over 8" phone?

    • +1

Not sure if I understand, there is no decimal point between 4 and 8. This deal is for the Lenovo Tab 4 which is 8" and the Lenovo Tab 4 Plus which is 10.1"

      • -1

        There exists a Tab 4 8 Plus and a Tab 4 10 (non Plus)

      • +2

There are actually 2 lines: the tab 4 (snapdragon 425, 800p screen and 2gb ram) and the tab 4 plus (snapdragon 625, 1200p screen and 3gb ram). Both come in 8 or 10.

There also exists a 4gb ram 64gb model of the plus which is not available here.

      • Not directed at you but rather to the first comment, it's been modified though…

        .

        • Ah got it, makes sense now :) Didn't realise that comment was modified.

  • Is 1280 x 800 ok on an 8 inch screen?

    • +7

If you don't need the warranty, I'd recommend the <$200 Tab 3 8 Plus aka P8 which has the better CPU, RAM and resolution of the Tab 4 10 Plus. It was released around the same time which made no sense.

      • Now looking for a valued tablet or phone, I am waiting for the lenovo tab 3 P8 to hit a price deal below $160 AUD and will consider to buy it. Not sure when it will happen again.

  • +5

Sigh. Where have all the decent Android tablets gone? When there are phones with the latest Qualcomm 8xx, 8GB RAM, and 64GB storage, why are there no android tablets that come near these specs?

    • +3

How many people actually buy tablets today? The larger phones have wiped out small tablets and ever lighter laptops, or 2-way devices like the Surface, are wiping out the larger ones except in specific cases.

It's a bit like a 2 door coupe version of a 4 door saloon, e.g. Monaro vs Commodore. Sure, some will like the looks, but they'll buy one and never replace it. Many still have an earlier iPad or similar. It still works, so why upgrade?

The other factor is things like Chromecast that link your phone to your TV, so the convenience of a phone and a large screen to play stuff on.

      • +1

Spot on. I have a 6" phone. It does everything I want to do and still pocketable. 6gb RAM. 1080P, and 64GB storage with expandable storage. Makes calls and surf the web.

      • +1

Little tablets have their uses. Purchased the Tab4 8 (was about $170 at Harvey Norman) for my senior Mother to use for her new Sony XB40 Bluetooth extra bass speaker (now superceded but very impressive for the price). The 7 and 10 have half the RAM as the 8 which is why it was chosen. I was tempted to buy a "new" but older model iPad (about $200 on eBay) but other OB's suggested it would have problems with some apps. Apple slow to update the Android for Apple app. Tablet only wanted to play music at home, via WiFi, but of course it can be used for web etc.

Only downside with the Lenovo is that the newer Androids not functioning Apple Music app on but Spotify app to the rescue. Yes ads with free account, but you don't notice the few secs half hourly. Mother is very pleased with her little setup. (She does have a "real" desk computer as never liked laptops / netbooks. (Has hearing sight impairments). It streams music (free) as opposed to downloads (with a paid for Spotify account). What is really interesting between the Apple and Spotify is that they appear to have different albums, so best of We were taking our iPad Air 2 over on weekends to play Apple albums.

It is useful for young (or not so young children too) as it has an adult / child set up if you like, when you are not so keen to trust them with your latest iPad or Galaxy Tab.

      • Nobody buys tablets these days cause the top of the line ones are crazy expensive and everything lower is not good value.

    • +1

The tab S3 (and S4) have/will have flagship level SoCs (though 1 gen behind - the S4 will likely have the 835 when flagship phones are likely to have 845), and also the Pixel C (though that is a bit long in the tooth for a flagship now). The Huawei M3/M4 tablets also use a top end SoC, though it is their own chipset and not a Qualcomm.

Sony tried to release flagship tablets with the latest SoC along with their phones (e.g. Z2 had SD800 in 2014 and Z4 had SD810 in 2015) and they were fantastic devices - but they were simply not popular, so it is a market space that has been explored and has deemed to be a failure.

Overall, they exist, but they don't get posted on OzB because they are seldomly bargains :D

      • +3

I loved the Z4 tablet, but only used it in the bath + on flights.
Now I've switched to showers and I won't be flying soon, so I sold it last year, hoping for an XZ tablet or similar…

        • Lol

        • Yes I like to read technical manuals in the bath too.

      • And like you say, they are a generation behind. Taking the Pixel C you reference as an example, Google no longer offer a tablet at all, and the C will NOT get the Android P OS. So there is no longer any Android tablet obtaining regular OS updates to showcase Android. Instead I can choose a Google Home or Mini :-( Google may be able to sell investors on their technology, but ignoring the consumer? Isn't that the road Microsoft has gone down?

    • I'm still waiting for Amazon to extract the finger and deliver their $150 10" tablet to Australia.

Talk is google are waiting to deliver chomeos on a tablet, but they will probably overprice that (like the pixel phones) and it probably won't work very well.

      • 'Extract'.. brilliant.

    • they now similar price as apple

  • Is the Tab 4 Plus 10.1" Full HD as good or better that a IPad for watching HD movies ?

The IPad isn't widescreen so is a smaller viewing area for movies.

    • +2

Can the ipad play mkv files with something like vlc? If so, it's probably better in terms of quality. This one can run kodi and play movies off usb drives and sd cards though, so it'd be my pick over the two. Besides, (profanity) Apple, etc.

  • How does the 10" compare with the Samsung Galaxy tab A? Specs on Galaxy look better and can't see any USB-C on the Lenovo

    • This is better than the Galaxy Tab A 10 ich. Better SoC (both octa A53 cores, but the SD625 is clcoked at 2ghz whereas the samsung is clocked at 1.6ghz), more ram, lighter and thinner. OP already listed USB C on the Tab 4 10 plus - is that what you mean?

      • Yes, no USB-C mentioned on the ebay listing for the Tab 4 10 plus

        • +2

Odd. Everywhere else is listing USB-C, including Bing Lee and Officeworks and the official AU Lenovo page probably safe to assume Good Guys stuffed up their listing.

        • Plus Lenovo has near vanilla Android UI vs Sammy's Touch(geez)Wiz

        • @Fiximol: Different SKU's: ZA2M0044AU vs ZA2M0036AU

        • @Brouw3r: Both BingLee and Officeworks are advertising as ZA2M0036AU and both mention USB-C so I am pretty confident of this. Not sure what the deal is with the SKUs

  • +7

The Tab 4 plus 10 is probably the best midrange 10 inch android tablet available in Aust right now.

If you are in the market for a tablet and don't mind chinese brands/buying from banggood, the Teclast T10 or Voyo i8 max are excellent alternatives, also under $300 AUD. The i8 max has an interesting SoC (Helio x20) that is an upper-mid SoC and hasn't been used in a tablet before and scores significantly better than the SD625 on artificial benchmarks, and the spec sheet ticks all boxes except for b28 and NFC (I think). However it is on preorder and has not been reviewed - whereas the T10 has been around and is known to be a good performer.

    • Huawei m3 is a big plus for me. You can give that a try.

    • Be careful with mediatek vs qc in terms of emulator compatibility (opengl not implemented as well) and heating issues in my experience.

    • Thanks for pointing this out. Very impressed with the specs of the Teclast T10 that seems like an excellent value device. 64gb storage, 4gb ram, 8100 mah battery, 2560 x 1600 resolution. If review says its robust and good build quality that'll be what I buy. https://youtu.be/4ImjMdQtaHc

    • +1

Good summary. Have been considering the Lenovo Tabb 4 10 Plus vs the Teclast T10 for a while. I've been leaning slightly to the Teclast T10 mainly due to the quality of the display. I've seen one review which points out that the OS is a bit buggy, that's a concern. Wouldn't mind a nice deal on the Teclast T10 soon.

      • The 7" and 10" had half the RAM as the 8" which is why we purchased the 8.

        • +2

There is a Lenovo Tab 4 10 and a Lenovo Tab 4 10 PLUS, which have different amounts of RAM. It gets confusing, without checking I think it is 2GB and 3GB RAM respectively.

If I'm going to buy a tablet this time, it will be a 10" one, need some kind of "step-up" from a 6" phone experience!

        • @CheapCharlie:
Not the only one finding it confusing. When we purchased the tab 4 8 Lenovo the 8s had double the RAM than the 7s and 10s. Did want to buy the 10 (as visibility is an issue for user) initially but the 8 is working out fine. Do not recall hearing of a 10 Plus at that time. Then it was selling for about $220 and we were happy paying $177 at TGG.

  • I would consider the snapdragon 625 unit because that's a Great CPU, and will handle gaming okay.

It's also very very efficient so you should see fantastic battery life.

    Massively concerning 16gb storage though.

Okay I bought one. Feel like I know what to expect having a phone with the same chipset as is.

Not sure if it will support 1080p Netflix though.

    • It does very well. Also has HEVC decoding as well.

    • Yeah same big concern about the 16GB storage too. How did you persuade yourself? Saw some Samsung tablet wish 64GB but why nobody mentioned them? Anyone give some thoughts?

      • +1

        I have a phone with a 625 chipset (asus zenfone ze520kl)

I'm very impressed with the performance and the battery life, and overall it just seems like a chipset that has long term staying power.

The zenfone is also 1080p so I know it won't be any slower despite being a tablet I guess?

Will be fine for Netflix consumption and browsing and have awesome battery life.

Thats the theory anyway, I'm also hoping the tablet has good app2sd functionality as my zenfone doesn't let me move apps. If the tablet does then it will be fine.

I figure $300 is only around $70 more expensive than the cheapest 625 chipset phone. It was reasonably easy to justify.

Simply put the 625 is underrated, and i know it has staying power for years to come.

  • I had a Sony Z2 tablet. Bought it at TGG. It's still a gathering dust on a shelf somewhere. At it's time I thought it was so great, but 16gb was just nonsense. I'd happily buy a Z22222 provided it had at least 64gb. Hard to find any Android tablet with decent specs that isn't Samsung. And I can't deal with Samsung touchwizz whizzbang version of Android.

    • Sony Xperia Z4 tablet with a 128GB MicroSD card.
Pretty close to stock Android, and beautiful with a bt keyboard.

  • Is there something akin to a refurbished 2 year old 7-8 inch tablet for around $60 or less that's got half-decent reviews? The Pendo 7 incher has pretty bad reviews. Mainly need a sensitive screen.

    • +2

We bought one of the Lenovo 7" tablets for my son when they were a bit cheaper (around $95 at the moment but I think they sell cheaper than that) and it's been pretty good. Decent battery life, not too slow for a cheapie, decent screen. I wouldn't use the Lenovo for anything strenuous, but for web/youtube/light gaming it's not bad at all.

I wouldn't touch the Pendo with a 10ft barge pole however.

      • Thanks. I'll keep an eye out. There's probably quite a few collecting dust around the world.

  • Thank you, I was looking for a tablet. This looks a perfect fit.

  • Hi how long the confirmation for click and collect?

  • Thanks Ops, bought one for my kid.

I wish they sell the Tab 4 8 Plus, so I could replace my Sony Z3 Tablet Compact

    Ipad anyday for tablet

    • +1

      lambo anyday for car

      • not really the same comparison here.
Bought latest ipad 9.7 ,32gig (not pro) for $398 the other day.

This is not much high compared to above $277 price tag for 16gb.
What you get is flawless device which will last another 5,6 years without any issue.

My Ipad 3 (from 2012) is still working great between.

        • But can it run Firefox?
How easy is it to install the dreamcast emulator and kodi?
Can it play mkv files off a flash drive and sd card?
Does it super ps3 and xbox controllers?
I'm assuming it has a headphone jack lol

        • Still using my iPad 3 as well. Plenty of dents, decent smash on one end with some glass missing, but still good enough for basic browsing, YouTube and Netflix.
Chrome doesn't really handle multiple tabs of pornhub very well though…

        • +1

@idonotknowwhy: Not everyone has same need as yours. I just need it for browsing (doesnt have to look beyond safari), youtube, playings kids app(lots of them)

All these work flawlessly and that too with about 10hrs of battery life.

For media playing/kodi I have a dedicated Nvidia shield for which there is no comparison with any of the tablets.

        • @ujwols: Ah, my needs are for flights. Go a nice desktops, laptops and a Raspberry Pi at home

        • +1

@idonotknowwhy: Ah good for you then. I just prefer to sleep during flight ,lol

        • +1

My Huawei Y550 for $40 from Harvey Abnormal is still working which I can't say for some better popular phones.

        • @ujwols:

As someone over 6ft tall I find that nearly impossible in todays economy class.

        • @serpserpserp: I can feel ur pain

        • It's interesting to compare the iPad 9.7 to the model introduced 5 years before.
          https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8620&idPhone2…

Same display, 2GB RAM over 1GB RAM, dual core 1.4 upgraded to dual 1.8, battery reduced by 20%, storage 64GB now 128GB, street price nearly the same $550.

I've never seen technology development so distorted in the last 30 years. Are tablets stuck in a warp?

        • @norkle: have you checked out ipad 10.5 pro?

        • @ujwols: I appreciate you pointing that out, and recognise the marked improvement. My point was I've never seen a company able to serve up the same technology for 5 years running and maintaining the price level, yet Apple have with the iPad. Kudos to Apple for the achievement, but to me it's a sad, sad day.

  • Any of these tablets play The Banner Saga 2 flawlessly?

  • Just wait for snapdragon 845 Tablets, since the 845 can emulate PS2 games really well.

    • since the 845 can emulate PS2 games really well.

      Damn I wish I didn't read this :(

I bought an SD835 phone since it can play gamecube games well, and now I have to upgrade again.
I didn't even know that mobile PS2 emulation was a thing!

      • -1

Yep its now coming /o/ , been waiting for it for years , 2 generations after 845 "so probs 865" will have 95% of ps2 games running without heating problems, thats just a guess

Or Buy the GPD WIN 2 , That can play ps2 games right now and has the correct controller.. Its the size of a N3DXL "btw the N3DXL can be hacked for free games, for me its the best Nintendo emulator"

        • "btw the N3DXL can be hacked for free games, for me its the best Nintendo emulator"

Already have this on the N2DSXL with a controller-cover to avoid wrist cramps

I'm happy to wait a couple of generations before playing PS2 on the go I guess.
Still got some GCN backlog to catch up on.

        • -1

@idonotknowwhy: eww the new 2ds.. that can't be hacked and you have to pay for games and lacks the 3d feature..

        • @Most Wanted: > that can't be hacked and you have to pay for games

          My 2DS XL is has proven otherwise (I system-transferred a mate's $99 "old 2DS with mario kart 7").
https://3ds.hacks.guide/get-started (bottom left corner of the table at the bottom of the page)

          lacks the 3d feature..

Which I never liked, hence the purchase choice

          Also, I like pikachu https://www.bigw.com.au/product/nintendo-2ds-xl-pikachu-edit…

  • Is there a ~8" Chinese Android tablet with 625 or faster cpu, reasonably good screen and usb-c connector? Would also like sim slot, but that is not absolutely necessary. Priced at ~250 or less?

    Edit:

Tab 4 8 plus. $230usd rrp. $200 usd cheapest historical Amazon price.

Any other options i should consider?

    • I'm watching for replies to your question as well
