I got the Lenovo P8 and it's sensational value for money. I'd recommend that over this.

    • Can you buy the P8 from any Australian retailers, though?

      • I don't think so, so warranty is definitely a factor.

        • Ditto on the P8 its a great tablet!

    • How much are they, and what specs compared?

      • +7

Gear best have them for around $190 plus shipping. The P8 has the 2.0ghz octacore snapdragon processor and 3gb of RAM. The tab 4 has the 1.4ghz quad core snapdragon and 2gb of RAM.

        • The screen on the p8 is really very good.

        • +3

@thisispants: Yeah, the P8 is Full HD. Streets ahead of this in all ways except it being non-local stock. I love my P8 and will be buying more when they go on sale again. I got mine for around the $155 mark November last year via an OzBargain deal.

        • @SteveAndBelle: Where did you buy from, Steve/Belle?

        • @wombat81: Gearbest has it for $150 ATM.

        • @AussieGargain: Thats USD, though.

        • +1

@wombat81: my bad, mate. It however comes with a free screen protector and a Lenovo branded sleeve. Hope that makes up the price difference. :)

        • @AussieGargain:

It however comes with a free screen protector and a Lenovo branded sleeve. Hope that makes up the price difference. :)

          Where does it say that?

Edit: never mind, an accessory pack is added to the cart automatically at checkout.

        • @SteveAndBelle:

I have a P8 as well as a locally bought lenovo Yoga Tab3 8" which also has same 1200 x 800 IPS screen and I prefer the screen on the Yoga.
It has punchier colours and is brighter than the P8. Not sure if this is a fault of my P8 or not though, but I think that's how it is.
Performance wise the P8 beats it except for battery life of course. I looked at this listed P4 8" model and screen good to me the same as my Yoga Tab3 8".
On the other hand the current Lenovo 10" Pro model also had a FHD screen or more and had really nice colours, contrast and bright.

        • +1

@wombat81: I got it from this deal back in late November and purely based on other OzBarginers reciews: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/343328 CashRewads and Gearbest points helped to bring the price down even futher.

        • @SteveAndBelle:

Wouldn’t mind getting one these if gets to that deal price.

        • @taoz: Yeah, I'll absolutely be jumping on another two or three. They're SO good!

    • Android 6

      • … and a 1920x1200 IPS screen, SD625 + Adreno 506, and 802.11b/g/n/ac.

        • Yeah that screen looks nice compared to the Tab4 8"…

The P8 also has better cameras.

Too bad no one is carrying it locally.

        • +1

Tab4 Plus is even better. Android 7.1, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.

        • @Clear: Very expensive, though.

        • @wombat81: $270ish.

        • @Clear:

I can't find them anywhere in a retailer to buy at a reasonable price.

        • @serpserpserp: You won't find it local. I got mine from Gearbest with discounts.

        • @Clear:

Says $370 on gearbest, link to the one you bought?

        • @serpserpserp: I paid 218ish US with coupons and cashback.

          https://m.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_686283.html?wid=21

        • @Clear:
          P8 is the Tab3 Plus

        • @scubacoles: Yup that's the previous gen with Android 6, 3GB RAM and 16GB storage. Compared to Tab 4 Plus with Android 7.1, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.

    • Any recommendations on a 10 inch tablet ?

    • My P8 has been a piece of crap. Randomly reboots, wifi drops out.

In the process of getting it back to gearbest for "repair", though i'm not holding my breath.

Luckily paypal will cover return shipping costs.

  • Bing Lee had the same tablet in store about 2 weeks ago for $159. You couldn't buy online, though.

  • nice find OP..

@Chateau: Well.. if you're Ivanka then you're no delicate flower.

  • How dors this compare with Samsung tablets?

    • +3

I'd rather have one of these than a Tab A.

  • Bought. Thanks OP.

  • I have a Nexus 7 (2nd gen) which is still going strong but firmware upgrades have now stopped at 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
I could do with a faster CPU and external storage, and firmware upgrades are nice.

Can anyone with my Nexus 7 opine on whether this would be a good upgrade?

    Many thanks in advance.

I'm waiting for Amazon to finally bring their Fire HD 10 to these shores.

      10.1", 1920x1200, 32 or 64GB, microSD slot, 1.8GHz quad-core CPU

It's not exactly a Nexus 7, but it hits many of the same points. And the usual US price is $150, with regular special offers (it's currently $120).

No idea how long the wait will be, or what markup they will try to extract.

      • But no Google Play…

        • Something remedied in a very short time (and with it the launcher too).

    • its about the same but the screen is a lower quantity wish Lenovo would bring the Tab 4 8 Plus here to Australia

    • I have a nexus 7 2nd generation as well and looking for a replacement. was eyeing the lenovo yoga tab3

    • +2

Wouldn't buy any Lenovo for firmware updates…
If it gets updated past Android 7 I'll be surprised… and there is no way it'll get updated past Android 8
If you care about firmware, Install a custom ROM to your Nexus.

      • Yeah but that's pretty much every brand except Google branded devices.

      • Agree. Lenovo haven't been great for firmware updates for me. In fact now I think about it - not surer I ever got any updates at all ..

  • Thanks for the advice - the Fire looks worth waiting for

  • FYI… the far better (but OS sourced) P8 currently on sale: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/359572 for approx. $180 Shipped.

    • +1

Its the Tab3, though. So while it has some better specs it is an older model. It's unlikely to get software updates moving forward. I'd love to get a hold of a Tab 4 8" Plus, though…

      • +1

Of course! Does everything I need both now and the forseeable future so it's perfect.

        • +1

The 16gb ROM is what bothers me. The Tab 4 8" has the same issue. I was always maxing out my 2013 N7, so I'd love some more ROM. Yeah I know they take an SD card, but it doesn't really gain you much with installed apps.

        • +1

@wombat81: I must be a light user then. I bought my first P8 late last year to replace a 4+ year old Acer which was still doing everything I needed but was just getting a bit annoying with its far less sensitive screen and old, slow CPU. It was also thicker & heavier plus the battery was starting to wig out a bit so the P8 was a massive improvement to that but also runs better than the Samsung Tabs some friends have… but at a quarter of the price :)

        • @wombat81:

This thread has been very informative because I'm finding my Nexus 7 (2013) more and more sluggish these days. I'm wondering about your comment on the 16Gb ROM… don't the newer android versions support using the SD card as on-board storage now? Or did I understand that incorrectly?

        • @tebbybabes: you can "move" some apps to the SD card but the majority still have to be in the internal memory. But at least all my maps and other big files will be able to go onto the SD card so that should free up a fair amount of internal storage compared to the N7. 16gb is the absolute minimum internal storage size these days. If I was paying more for a more premium tablet I would definitely want more than 16gb internal.

        • @wombat81:
Ahhh, thanks for that. That's a shame. I had such high hopes for the adoptable storage spec. In that case, I'm afraid that 16 might not be enough for me. On my present device which is nominally 32gb, I'm at 15.33 used out of 26.41. I know I could probably pare down my apps installed but I'm not too keen on having to do that.

OTOH, the bang-for-buck pricing for very decent specs is difficult to resist.

  • Officeworks also have this tablet on sale for $176 at the moment.

Bought one of these from OW today. My first impressions coming from a 2013 Nexus 7.

    Good:
    - No bloaty Android overlay. Close to stock Android which is by far the best way to go.
    - screen is very bright and vivid
    - software is smooth. CPU feels powerful.
    - form factor is nice. Feels the same size as my old N7 but the screen is bigger. Nice and thin and good weight.
    - I'm excited about split screen. Will be cool to use oziexplorer and google navigation side by side.
    - I don't have an SD card for it yet, but that's going to be a big bonus over the N7.

    Bad:
    - only single band Wi-Fi. I hadn't realised before I bought it. Not a deal breaker but pretty lame for a late model device
    - screen resolution is not great coming from a 2013 nexus 7. It'll be fine, but my eyes are noticing the pixels big time at the moment.
    - no on board compass. Again, not a huge deal but pretty lame for a late model tablet.
    - 0% charge out of the box. Seems strange. No one wants to wait before they can use the device they've just shelled out decent dollars for. Feels like Lenovo haven't thought about their customer.
    - does seem to charge slowly. I really hope it will be able to maintain charge in the car while the screen is on and the charger is connected.
    - the vertically scrolling apps list feels very Android Gingerbread (read: old) . Easily fixed with a different launcher but another thing that lacks finish.
    - the little upload and download triangles inside the Wi-Fi signal strength icon on the status bar aren't quite straight. Yeah it's not a big deal but another lack of finish thing.

Overall, I like it. But it does lack the finish and refinement of the N7. It's easily more powerful than the N7. I haven't played any games on it yet, though.

I think it's a good N7 replacement, overall. Yes, the Tab 4 8 Plus would have been amazing, but I'm not prepared to shell out that much extra cash for it and grey importing still isn't cool, IMO. This thing represents good value at this price, while not being super high spec. If you're after premium specs, save your dollars and look at the plus model. But this looks to be a good general purpose tablet. I'm glad I didn't go for the cheaper 7" with the crappy cpu.
