Based on the previous products I purchased from Ikea? The instructions were probably terrible.
@samfisher5986: there are 10 bolts to build the stand. the wood section is pre-assembled. you'd have to be pretty (profanity) retarded not to be able to follow the 12 page instructions (3 pages are instructions and one page shows how to attach the drawer handles)
It's probably just really tricky to get the legs to fit together evenly, so that it stands up without one leg off the ground.
Our generation is so un-handy. Its embarrassing. How can you not be able to build an ikea desk with like 12 parts?
I built 2 of them for my daughters. easy peasy. not exceptionally hard. paid full price for them. this is a bargain. great build quality and they love their desks

Don't trust reviews. being hard to assemble has nothing to do with the overall product. its like giving a meal 1 star because its hard to cook.
besides, the instructions are terrible for all ikea products. go to youtube instead.

Bamboo is extremely durable. Chinese construction use bamboo as the scaffolding.
