  • Just out of curiosity, has anyone gone with absolutely no ability and if so how long did it take you to learn the ropes?

Apparently this saying comes from Ye oldie days of sailing ships and sailors learning how to navigate the rigging etc. I never knew.

    • About 4 days before I could comfortably ski down the easy slopes, turning etc. I was definitely slow to learn though, fun can definitely be had in the three days.

    • Around a day, I was with a mate that was showing me the ropes, but also was in Hakuba so there was no fear of falling due to the soft snow.

    • Thanks for the replies :)

Gives me hope for myself, considering I'm not particularly adept that sort of stuff.

      • IMO Thredbo is not the ideal for beginners - you are limited to a small area and the progression to other slopes is steep. (pun not intended) Thredbo is awesome when you've a bit of experience.

If you want to start out consider Mt Selwyn (90% for beginners) or Blue Cow (small beginners area but some great long and easy runs you can probably tackle on the second day). Mt Selwyn is also usually cheaper than them all.

          Thanks for the advice :)

Not planning on going to the Snow just yet, but I'll definitely keep that on board when I'm planning it in the future.

  • Any general though on the value of this? Might be keen to expose the kids to some skiing

May want to rethink that unless they area able to pay their own way. Travel there, ski tube or national park fee,ski hire, lift prices, food etc. My wallet is hurting just thinking about it. It is such an expensive activity in Australia, its a shame really.

Cheaper to take the Family for a holiday to Japan with amazing snow.

As the other commenter said, it's definitely cheaper in a lot of cases to get a big package, and make it a trip to Canada/USA/Japan rather than going for a few days to Aus snow. When you're committed for a week/two weeks, the kids will 100% be guaranteed to learn pretty well, you don't have to travel far to get to the snow (ski in ski out accom is affordable overseas), and it's a holiday so the food/accom/etc costs are sort of already going to be expensive.

Then, if your family got a kick out of it, learned well etc., you can think about going to the mountains in Aus - then they'll be much more accepting of the shitty conditions (not snow, I mean r.e. staying far away, big drive in the morning, pocket sandwich for lunch, nightmare traffic on the way home) than if you went and did that right away.
