Science Diet Feline Mature Hairball Control

Wow, the pet food industry can make up some crap with their nonsense marketing.

Hills are champions at guilt tripping Pet Owners. The Checkout even ran a story on it.

        • Hills are champions at guilt tripping Pet Owners.

Agreed, I'm amazed at how they can get away with their bullshit.

Their "prescription diets" are laughable, but people fall for it.

Doesn't help that most vet clinics also stock it, which fools people even more.

My local vet has shelves of it.

@Scab: The speciality urinary dry food, which is caused by dry food resulting in high alkalinity of the urine resulting in the formation of crystals in the bladder, has completely cleared up an issue with my furball.

So - no, not always a scam.

        • +1

          @picklewizard:

Funnily enough, a lot of the time it's caused by feeding dry food, especially in the case of cats.

And the rest of the ingredients are extremely poor quality, usually the first two are corn and wheat/flour, which make up the majority.

        • +1

@Scab: Yeah I absolutely get that - but I'm not feeding him wet food constantly, it's still cheaper (and more convenient) to feed a prescription diet :)

But yeah, I assume cheap dry food is made to cater to the lowest acceptable standard, and if moggie doesn't agree with it, then you're stuck buying the pricey stuff.

        • I had to recently start to buy the Hill Kidney Disease one for my cat. Bloody expensive but vet recommended and I would do almost anything for my 16 year old cat.

        • @Scab: not just stock but 'prescribe'

Science Hills have actually duped most people into thinking they are a high-quality pet food. I started buying it when i first got my puppy, but then was warned about it. Found this site, and never bought it again.
        http://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/

        • unfortunately true, Hills Science diet started off in the sixties as a good diet

They are currently owned by Colgate Palmolive who have a lot more advertising dollar than me or you

There must a $ element to vets spruiking this food

Amazingly is working on cat litter.

It's always worked on cat litter?

Breeders Choice Litter 30 Litres RP $21.99 Sale: $15.39

Cheaper to get Back2Nature as it's essentially the same thing (and from the same company).

      • Back2Nature small animal bedding? Same as regular kitty litter?

        • yeah it's pretty much the same thing, paper based litter. just a little bit softer and less pellety

    • There's a Breeders Choice Litter 30L for rabbits and it's literally the same thing except slightly smaller pallets, and it's like $16 normally. An employee at Petbarns gave me this lifehack when I bought some last time.

Have any of you tried the 'repeat order' to get extra 10% off, stack with the 30% off coupon and then cancel the repeat order after you receive the first order (giving you 37% total savings!)?

    • Just guessing here, but wouldn't the repeat order discount be for the next order?

      • It used to work for the initial order (when they first introduced it) .. haven't used it in ages!

        • Works for the initial order. Did it a few weeks back.

    • Doesn’t stack anymore.

sucks :( miss the days when their marketing and IT teams were disorganised :(

        • I'm hearing you.

30% off Store-wide + I Miss You code + Repeat Delivery Discount = They nearly owed you $$

          @Steptoe:

Their website is legendary for bugs and mistakes. I once got just over $200 worth of pet food delivered to my house for nothing. I have no idea how it happened or how to make it happen again, but when it came to paying for my order the total was zero. I didn't dare risk losing it by adding more items so I clicked and they actually delivered it. Amazing.

Edit: So I went back and double checked my order, turns out I was exaggerating a bit. It actually was $170 worth for $10 delivered. Still a pretty decent discount :-)

        • @chawbery:
If I've told you once, I've told you a Million times, don't exaggerate!

  • Ive tried buying some stuff through poetbarn today and keep on getting error messages not sure what’s up with that

same here, i saw some royal canin dog food with $37 off but the code only took off another $4…, guess its 30% off RRP

    • Same, but still brought the Ivory Coat Grain free down to almost $80/13kg from the $99 special it is on (which is the same as petcircle etc. have it for regular)

  • +1

I never buy from them anymore unless there's a 30% off… seems to happen every 2nd week.

  • +3

Petbarn is pretty expensive…need 30% off. Budget Pet Products is far cheaper (everyday).

    • +4

Petbarn is much more expensive but with these discounts you can sometimes snag a decent price if you're selective.

But most of their stuff, even with the "discount", is more than Budget or Pet Circle.

      • Yep I've always ordered with Pet Circle. They are so much cheaper.

        • Petbarn has more stores so it’s far more convenient

        • usually but not always
I usually order with them, but always compare, and sometimes find I save more

eg my bag of dog food @99 was $17 more expensive at pet circle yesterday compared to petwarehouse

but today @99 it is cheaper by $10

petbarn with their offer today beats petcircle by $17

  • Online only. Bah. They won't deliver frozen mice.

    • pick up in store?

      • They don't list them on their website unfortunately.

  • its a con - only searches local warehouses

  • How do they compare to Vet Products Direct? I've usually found in-store prices much higher at Petbar/Petstock.

  • For me this just brings prices down to what I can get them for online. Sentinel Blue 6 month comes down to about $102 del and I can get it on ebay for $104 del. But with ebay I can use a discount voucher PAY5LESS and get an additional 5% off which brings it under $100 del.

So for me this isn't really worth it. YMMV though.

    • Don’t forget 4% cash rewards. Still, cheaper elsewhere is cheaper!

  • +1

What are the Best wet-food for cats?

    • Tried Wellness CORE Grain Free?

  • Is it just me or does anyone else noticed they jacked up the price during sale? I bought some cat treats last month (early February) in store for around $5 each. Now they're $6 each. (Well, it's still cheaper now using the 30% off code)

    @marty
    thanks for the offer code

Why oh why do you feed your dog Royal Canin
    look at their ingredients:
Brewers rice, chicken by-product meal, wheat, corn gluten meal, oat groats, chicken fat, natural flavors, dried plain beet pulp, fish oil, calcium carbonate, grain distillers dried yeast

Don't believe in their marketing (different kibble for different breeds, its still the same rubbish)

There's a lot of better products you can buy for a similar price point!
    Just my 2c

    • Totally agree, sadly people don't read the ingredients and go for the slick advertising and bullshit.

    • What would you recommend?

My beagle has been on Royal Canin now for the last year and a bit and he’s almost 9 years old. He is in great shape, very active for his age and his coat is always shiny. Used to get smelly farts on his old diet but not anymore.

Previously was feeding him at stages Advance, Optimum, Nature’s Goodness & farmers market with Royal Canin being the best so far.

This is obviously along with fresh meat and bones.

So many mixed reviews out there and so many options!

    • Cheers for advice @Docians

Anything you recommend as an alternative for large dogs?

      • +1

I have a lab, I currently feed him Ivory Coat and we are both happy
Started with Royal Canin (impressed that was specially designed to slow down his ravenous ways)

Here is a comparison between the two

        Royal Canin for Labrador
        $99 for 12kg ($8.25 per kilogram)
top ingredients :dehydrated poultry protein, rice, wheat, maize, maize gluten, animal fats

Ivory Coat (lamb and kangaroo formula)
        $99 for 13kg ($7.61 per kilogram)
top ingredients: Lamb Meal, Kangaroo Meal, Potatoes, Peas, Dried Lamb, Dried Kangaroo
        This is an Aussie product
Ivory coat comes in different flavours eg turkey duck, chicken, ocean fish etc

Other good foods I have tried include Canidae, taste of the wild, Meals for Mutts and Kirkland Signature Natures Domain (he didn't like the taste of this one)

Another Aussie food is Stay Loyal

For a full list of good pet foods with reviews check out
        http://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/dry-dog-food/best-dry-dog-f…

In the end my only suggestions are
read the label for ingredients and decide if its worth feeding
try a small pack and see if you fur baby likes the food
check and see if they have a variety of flavours to give a bit of variation
Ensure that they have a regular supply in Australia and are readily available

I am not a vet, nor am I associated with any website or pet food company
Just another person who loves my pet

  • shafted this post came 12 hours too late

  • had a real problem trying to submit an order last night, the total through to PayPal was 1 cent lower than what Petbarn's site showed and PayPal would not work.. In the end had to remove something that I didn't want to, due to stock issues I couldn't add another, hopeless & horrible experience - waste of time.

One thing that annoys me lately is Stock is available for Click & Collect nearby but not for delivery, it's BS - recent problem, never used to happen.

delivery only searches local warehouses - its a scam.
