  • Is this the same place as Haikou?

    • No, this one's in Hǎinán.

      • Is this meant to be a joke that I don't get

        • OP tried to be more accurate by adding tone indications to the vowels so I'm just replying in kind.

    • Still do not get it why op makes a city in China look like a city in Vietnam, lol.

What did the op do that made the city look like a city in vietnam?

Hǎikǒu instead of Haikou, I think?

Next time maybe Shànghǎi or Běijīng?

      • Never heard of pinyin?

        • Not when we're writing in English.

        • Writing it using the pinyin when using English is weird. Pinyin is just a tool to help people learn Chinese. It's not any official element of Mandarin

        • @jamesblake2908: Chinese themselves learn pinyin at school. It's standardised across China. It's rather official.

Hainan Island has some weird Visa on Arrival thats free for Australian citizens. Once you have it, its treated like a normal tourist Visa and you can actually fly to different cities around China with it.

This is different to the 72/144 hour Visas that other cities offer.

        • You can do a dog leg trip and don't need a chinese via. I arrived in Shanghai, got 144 hour visa on arrival for free, went to Hangzhou, Suzhou and then onwards to Tokyo.

Apparently this airport on Hainan island is different, you get 15 days free and don't need to dog leg: https://www.travelchinaguide.com/embassy/visa/intro2.htm#hai… but you still can't leave Hainan province.

        • @zan5hin:
Thank you for the link. It says tourist agency organized (supposedly handsomely paid) trips for a group of five and above, for Hainan, which makes this fare deal not applicable?! I am keen on having some definitive advice. Thanks.

        • USD 20 but maybe more now, was a few years ago.

      • Not for individuals, only groups of 5+ as far as I can see

        • Nope

        • @greenpossum: a link instead of just saying nope

        • @UberIsCool: You probably missed the previous deal. If you look there, this has been discussed already. Anyway you don't seem to have much luck at searching. I put in "Hainan visa on arrival" and this was the second hit:

http://www.tropicalhainan.com/visas-for-hainan/ and the first paragraph goes:

"Hainan is unique in all of China in that it offers a visa on arrival (landing visa) for independent travellers with a separate visa policy for groups of more than 5 people. Once you get the visa you are not restricted to staying in Hainan, that means you may travel to other parts of China and you can thereafter leave from any port of embarkation (i.e. sea and airport) as long as the visa hasn’t expired"

and later on processing fees, it says between USD 20 and 200 in cash.

This isn't just armchair knowledge either. I used the VoA system paying USD 20 when I visited in 2010. (Though things may change, but the evidence is that it hasn't.)

          So again, nope.

    • Looked into this last deal and heading soon - confirmed with the airline can get VoA which allows travel within mainland China.

Easier to get double entry if heading to HK/Macau, however can be tricky and book a flight back from there with Hainan Airlines to get another VoA.

      • Voa is for groups of 5 or more

        • Nope

        • @mcnugget: can someone please post a link to that info? I have read five pages that say it’s groups only, otherwise I’d love to go :)

        • @UberIsCool: See comment below, this is the information confirmed with the airline.

Is a page somewhere that mentions it, but found they were responsive to email if that concerned.

$34 Visa on arrival for 30 days for individuals. You can then travel anywhere in china and leave from a different port up to 30 days.

  • 1) To find out which nationalities are eligible for landing visas call Haikou, Meilan airport visa office +86 89865751994 or Sanya Phoenix airport visa office +86 898 88289566

I called them and they were pretty helpful in broken English

    2) Visa offices in both airports are open 24 hours to facilitate collection of visas

    2) You'll need a valid passport

    2) 2 passport photographs, i.e. head shots (preferably blue or white background)

    3) Processing fee, this varies according to nationality and can range from USD $20 to $200, (cash only accepted)

    ~$35aud for Australia passport holders

    4) It is also recommended that visitors have a second form of ID such as a photo driving licence in case one is required.)

Visas are ok for individuals and families, doesn't have to be a group. Visa duration will be based on the itinerary you have.

  • Dates are currently available at that price for the Easter break period, which is pretty rare

Hi All, i arrived Haikou yesterday, yes, you can apply for VOA at Haikou after landing, you will need a passport size photo, PAY CASH CNY 168 and fill in a form. The staff told me they are in the process of upgarding they system, so at this point of time, they only TAKE CNY CURRENCY, no visa, master or amex or US Currency. they will give you change if you do not have exactly CNY168. So if you are thinking of coming, exchange some CNY in Australia first. Usually they give you the maximum visa is only 15 days if you apply the VOA in Haikou.

    • Legend.

Heading next week if you have any other tips or suggestions on where is good.

        1. People in Hainan hardly speak English. Make sure your have your Hotel’s name and address printed in Chinese characters (Google for this info). Then your can show it to the taxi driver and they will be able to take you to the right hotel.
        2. If you want to go to Haikou from Sanya via express train, the train ticket cost around CNY 100 to CNY 110. Depends on which station did you board the train. This fare is for 2nd class carriage. 1st class cost more, i don't know the exact fare as i travelled 2nd class carriage.
        3. Do a lot of reseach about what do you want to do in Haikou and Sanya if you come here by yourself and did not join any local tour. As you don't get much help from the local residents here, even hotel staff is not helpful. I stayed in the 4 stars and 5 stars hotel in Haikou and Sanya, I don't get much help from them.
        4. Download VPN on your mobile before leaving Australia, otherwise you are unable to use google, facebook and other website in China. This is a MUST!
        • Thanks so much! Appreciated

We're mostly venturing away from the island but having a few quiet days in Sanya at the end - good stuff to know.

Interested if Bo'ao is worth a day trip if you ended up there.

  • Hi,

I arrived in Hainan yesterday and so far everything is great, I have read a few post saying people got board or didn't have good experiences but as of now we are really liking it.

I'm traveling with my wife and 2 kids (1 and 3 year old) and everything has been smooth… The visa on arrival process is the only thing I would like to see improved (it took about 2 hours) but not really a big deal

I'm here for 6 more days so post any questions and I'll try to answer

Staying in Haikou only - was planning on a day or 2 in Sanya but with the about of things to do at our resort and in the area I doubt we will do that in this trip
