first time poster, longer time lurker, please excuse me if i haven't displayed the correct ozbargain etiquette while posting.

the name says it all. I went to JB hifi and talked with sales rep for various deal, he was encouraging me to sign up for $59 deal with $200 gift card. but 8gb data 500 mins nationally on telstra network and unlimited sms was no brainer for me. this is 12 month contract but credit and additional data is available even after 12 months unless u re contract to other plan.

Why is this a bad thing? Telstra has the best coverage and speeds.

You can much cheaper deals that aren't with Telstra just saying…

      • I used to sub contract for their landline division. One of their tricks was to charge disconnection / reconnection fee if someone was late paying. I only found out when telecommunications ombudsman's office contacted me - I was one of the contractors who apparently performed these disconnections / reconnections. Other stories are just the well known ones - unauthorised plan changes etc. They may be better now, but it isn't what I hear from my smallish circle of associates.

        • Want to know one of Vodafone's tricks? Cancel your phone plan if you are 2-3 days late paying a bill, and then charge a late fee and 'reactivation fee' (seriously, is this even a thing?) if you want to actually use your service again. This was 18 months ago, FYI, so not that long.

Unauthorised plan charges and changes occur everywhere with telcos it seems. No one wants to play fair, yet you have to deal with someone don't you?

        • From the guys that held back progression of rolling out broadband networks to Australia in the 00s. This seems about right.

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just get the $59 plan.
With the $10 credit, it is $49 pm. And if you treat the GC as cash, it comes down to around $32-33 per month from memory. So only, $3-4 for 20gb MORE data and unlimited calls and texts.
Of course the GC isn’t cash value, but JB price matches and most people can get something useful from there over the course of a year.
Obviously the $49 isn’t discounted past the 12 months, but you can count on there being better offers in 12 months time.

  • Any ideas if the $59pm plan with the pixel 2 is still available? I had an online chat and they told me so but I hadn't had the time to pop in store to check. cheers

    • Technically it's available until the end of April, but stocks are limited if you are wanting the bonuses.

      • Thanks! Which bonuses are you referring to? Cheers

        • Things like the Google Home Mini and the AiAiAi pipe earphones, but as they get more customers you might find it hard to negotitate more data and free international calling etc.
