How to Get Refund for Office Cake?

How can I get the new office girl to give me back the money she owes me? read on …

We have a birthday tradition where everyone including the boss puts in ten bucks for a birthday cake on a birthday. Then at 2pm we go to the birthday table and give the cake and we all get a slice to eat.

I am working there 1 and a half years no complains from me at all.

Then the boss gets a new assistant girl. Yesterday we all gave her ten bucks for a guys cake. 2pm rolls around and the cake isnt the best one caramel mud cake … but I eat it anyway.

But when I was making tea in the kitchen later guess what I saw in the bin … a docket for the cake. I am curious guy and I took it out to read it. Total cost for medium glucose free caramel cake was $63.50 but there were 8 of us who gave money in the office.

"What happened to the $17.50?" I asked the girl. She was very defensive that I brought it up, and said that she is allowed to keep it because she spent her lunch break to drive her car and get the cake.

I think if I told the boss she would be fired in an instance, but I am holding back because I don't want to look bad.

Whats the best way to deal with this? I'd be happy enough if she just gave me some small refund, 5 bucks?

EDIT: I saw some one say to put the docket on the bosses desk and keep photographs of it just in case. Honestly this is exactly what I wanted to hear. I am thinking of doing it after everyone leaves 5pm today. Some people said that the boss could take it the wrong way, so I am definitely not going to put my name on it, just anonymously put the docket there.

EDIT: for some reason no one has gone home yet, i will wait a bit more until i'm sure they are gone. I have some second thoughts after what everyone said about me only getting 2 bucks not 5 bucks or more, but I should trust my gut instincts to do the right thing.

edit didnt give docket to boss, and im getting a later train home. feel sick thinking about this whole thing. i will ask my life partner what they think and maybe come in early tomorrow morning and give docket then.

        • You left out it was "glucose free" cake

      • +3

Why do you keep saying $5???

    • +1

      For framing purposes?

  • Easy solution. Next time you go and get the cake and pocket the difference. Maybe put it on a rotation.

  • +8

Jeez mate, I know this is Ozbargain but that's a whole new level of petty.

All I can say is I'm glad I don't have to put up with you for 8 hours each day.

  • OMG. this is why we need EMOJIS

    • +7

      🤔

  • +2

Based on the number of inaccuracies with your figures ($17.50, $5) I am willing the bet that the actual amount on the receipt was not $63.50.

    I hope you get fired.

This and this … thanks for joining.

Hahaha, that other post is tragic to say the least. Just, wow.

    • +1

      Best combo posts ever

    • Omg… this is ozbargains not ozbogans. I think his membership should be revoked from posting these two threads

  • +4

A chocolate mudcake is $4.00 at Coles. Same result.

Sounds like you guys might be better off spending the $10 each on a couple of drinks on a Friday night in order to become friends not enemies.

  • +1

Maybe you should get a copy of the receipt so you can claim it on tax too!
How do you feel about being the cake purchaser next time?

  • +1

It's funny how you went through the bin to check the receipt because the next time you have a piece of cake at work it will also come from the bin.

  • +1

Well it's unreasonable to expect the cake to cost the exact amount that was gathered.
A refund would be nice, but $16.50 isn't much.

  • +1

    why isn't OP responding? xD

    • +2

Cake time at work. Still looking for todays receipt.

  • +8

She doesn’t owe you anything you bellend… Do you really think every time there’s been a cake purchased it’s costed exactly $80??

    Jfc

    • +6

The change should be saved and accumulated until it is enough for new cake though!

      • +1

Yep agree, should be kept in a kitty for the next time.

        • +3

Although I just reread the OP. The assistant is driving her own car in her lunch break, so there should be some degree of compensation I suppose…but then again if it is work related she should do it on company time/vehicle?

      • Actually that’s a good idea for the OP to suggest.

Change goes into a Friday morning social coffee or after work drinks fund.

Did that in my old job was great!

  • +11

You should also go after your share of the credit card points.

Get the bikies onto her in the car park after work.

  • +3

Shitpost of the month, thanks OP!

  • +1

In fairness, the girl shouldn't feel entitled to keep the change. I would have just called out the difference and bought coffee for the bday person and a $10 scratchie as well. The girl also deserves a coffee for effort. Its just being petty if you think you deserve a refund.

  • +2

You're kidding right? All this over your $2 share?

You got all flustered over $2, but didn't even bother to consider reimbursing her travel expenses?

Please take it to your boss and report back to us, I want to see what your boss has to say. Lets see if she really does get fired over your $2.

Side note, I'm employed in a similar position as her in a small office. I get told to fetch stuff for the office, buy lunch etc. There have been times where I've kept change upwards of $10 from my boss. But there have also been times where I pay extra out of my pocket, but don't even bother asking for reimbursements. Because well, it's chump change. Yet here you are freaking out over $2 and wanting to get someone fired over it?

I must be a monster to you

    • Don't scare op like that, he gonna make annouymous report to police

  • +5

OP, this is whats gonna happen.

Boss either ignores or brings it up with girl
Girl says she put it in kitty for next event (which may of actually happened)
Girl lets everyone in the office including boss know you scabbed it out of the bin and ratted.

End result = You look stupid and petty and everyone knows it was you. Also, you have your bosses assistant and god knows who else offside.

Check your cake VERY carefully when its your birthday.

Also, you are a bad person for trying to get someone fired for $17 considering the circumstances.

    • +1

OP, this is whats gonna happen.

This is assuming the Boss even knows that the cake is worth $80
He might just see it and think "Ah cool, she provided a receipt" and not even mention it.

Additionally, when we send new hires out to do shit like this at work, we make sure we've contributed more than enough and just let them keep the change.

      • She should have given the receipt to the boss: he can deduce it from the company's income, and return the difference in tax to all you employees !!!

  • +5

but I am holding back because I don't want to look bad.

    too late

  • +3

The bigger horror is why she didn't buy giftcards to get cashrewards, pricematch at Officeworks, and spend the difference on Eneloops.

  • +4

can we file this under first world problems?

    • +4

But it looks like the OP had a third-world education with his amazingly awful maths skills.

  • +1

What did I just read? …

  • You should get fired too for asking for more than your share of $1

  • +2

wow i would expect to see you picketing out the front of your workplace.

go on strike start a riot.

i worked as a contactor for Australian air express years ago. one day one of the fulltimers came and grabbed all of us contractors and said we all have to go out to the grassed area outside the building. we sat their for 2 hours, the labour hire company rang me and asked "what was happening and asked why we were on strike?" i was unaware we were on strike, i asked one of the fulltimers and he advised "yeah we're on strike as the took the coke machine away and replaced it with a pepsi machine"

so yeah mate get your protest signs ready and picket your workplace

    • Wth… Such a first world problem!

  • +2

    I came here for cake

  • +6

To op, if its only take $5 for you make someone lose their job, you're horrible person. Anyone who live with you, they probably have lot karma from previous life.

    • +1

Not even $5, $2 at best. Quite sad.

      • +2

Nah. Op doesn't want $2. He want 5. It is indeed quite sad!

        • +3

The $5 is hush money, to keep her crimes on the down low.

  • +2

Definitely tell your boss, make sure you include the part where you deserve $5 and others don't deserve anything because you went dumpster diving. Someone will definitely "be fired in an instance".

Why is she not allowed to be compensated for her time and effort while you are?

  • +1

Look at their edits. This is clearly a troll post.

    • +1

OP on ozbargain on employers time. He/she owes the boss some wages back

  • +1

Would you have chipped in for her insurance excess if she was in an accident?
Hell she may have already asked the Boss about the change, etiquette says it’s hers to keep.

Do you take a calculator to lunch so you can “pay your share”?

  • +2

You're being a dick. Find something else to occupy your time.

  • You should've stormed into the boss' office with the receipt, slam it down and yell "I WANT MY CHANGE".

But make sure you include your calculations, because you don't want to look like an idiot

    /s

  • Next time buy the cake then work out how much everyone needs to chip in based on receipt

  • +2

EDIT: I saw some one say to put the docket on the bosses desk and keep photographs of it just in case. Honestly this is exactly what I wanted to hear. I am thinking of doing it after everyone leaves 5pm today. I think I saw this manoeuvre in a James Bond movie. Mooncaker.

    • +1

      More like Mudraker.

      • Mudcakeraker

  • +3

if it was me (in charge of getting the cake) i would have given the left over change back to my manager. i think it does speak volumes about her character that she kept the change.

that, or shes on minimum wage and $17 makes a difference to her life.

    • +3

She should have eaten the docket at the very least.

  • +1

Miods please rename this forum to “how to be cheap”

  • +1

If you anonymously put the docket on the boss' desk, how is he going to know to refund YOU $5 instead of just refunding $2.06 to everyone?

    • +1

I hope the boss fires OP for being a pathetic troll. No one needs people like this at work.

  • +1

Every work place has someone like this,
Move on and get a life !!!

  • Just don't put in next time and still eat cake

  • +1

    Give me your Paypal account.
    I'll deposit $2.06 on the girl's behalf.
Then you can build a bridge with it and get over it.

  • Yep, this is my cue. Enough Internet for today

  • +1

This has to be a troll post, but just in case it isn't, then OP should offer to buy the cake next time and pocket any change.

"Cakes online" delivery charges - sounds like you guys got off relatively cheap.

    https://www.cakesonlineaustralia.com.au/Delivery.aspx

    • +1

Even better if it coincides with an Amex ShopSmall and there's a cake shop on the list!
      -> Amex points
-> $10 cash back (not on the reciept)
      -> Keep the change
-> Effectively taking out a cash loan on your credit card without paying the cash rate (usually 20%)

      • You sound like the guy who didn’t want to pass his discount back to his sister.

  • OP, would you spend your own time to collect a cake for nothing?

  • +6

Did you whip out your weighing scale to make sure all slices of cake were divided equally too?

  • Considering the posts here. The troll has won.

  • op: wait until its her birthday, get the pool of money, say $80, and then proceed to buy the coles $5 chocolate cake (everyone knows the one). try and get the cake when its marked down to $2 and make sure to leave the markdown sticker on the packet for her to see. also leave the receipt somewhere showing that $80 was collected.

  • Dunno, I can't think for myself either

  • +2

wait a second… its this guy with the weird driving tips again https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355345

    • +1
      1. Hitchhike = zero costs. Just try not to get murdered.
  • OP is just being a typical Aussie. Ozbargainer.

cant blame him for clawing the stingy word across the board.

  • +3

OP is the kind of people I fear when looking at new jobs

  • +1

Came in here to see the train wreck of a post. Was not disappointed. 100% ya’ll posting in a troll thread.

Shame I ran out of neg votes. Thanks OP, now I’ll have to wait till tomorrow for more negs…

  • Whats this rubbish?

  • I think you should complain to the boss about how poorly you get paid.

  • If you don't expect $2 back you must hand in your ozbargain license. They are living the ozbargain life lol.

How many times have you been petty enough to not buy some thing because a company charges you a few dollars tracking?

  • +2

Oh wow this is what I think is worst kind of person. Willing to create animosity over a couple $. Like I'm not a fan of the lady who kept the money without asking what to do with the change but I hardly think there's any nefarious intent there. What makes you think you're owed $5 and not $2.06?

  • +1

people owe me money, should i make a post about it?

    • +1

Yes! Do it! Always worth getting opinions from people on the internet.

  • +5

This guy is a real life version of George Cosatnaza.

    • +2

Yes, first thought was this has Curb all over it.

    • Cheapness is not a sense.

  • +1

    Serious, leave your bank details.
    I'll give $5.
    Happy?

    • +1

      Yeah I'll contribute.

  • +1

I saw some one say to put the docket on the bosses desk and keep photographs of it just in case

Who said that? I read through all the comments and didn't see that anywhere. Majority are just calling you a troll. I think I believe them.

  • +1

Curious to know. Did you claim overtime for staying back at work whilst deciding whether or not you were going to put the docket on the boss's desk?

  • Please delete your account

  • "feel sick thinking about this whole thing" LOL. Better things to worry about then $17. 1st world problems i guess

  • All this emotional baloney over cake worth a few dollars. You seriously need to get over it. I can't imagine how you make life's more important decisions.

  • She did use her petrol and time to get it. Either way it's pretty stupid to cause a bad name for yourself over two bucks.

The fact you think you deserve five because no one else raised the issue makes you a hypocrite.

But I say raise it with your boss, and have your boss think "really"

  • +1

My sister never paid me back 2.50 in 1985. It really bothers me.
