I don't think that you can expect much from these.

  • +36

Just keep in mind, if you plan to return it, you won't be able to put it back into the box…

    • +10

No returns on mattresses unless you're claiming warranty on it ofc

      • Hmm, would a Mattress be classed as a Bedding Accessory?

        • No idea but it falls under that hygiene rule. Same with pillows and linen.

        • @CVonC: Oh right, from what I've seen & heard though big w will generally provide a refund if a product isn't up to standard

        • +1

          @Juzzy96:

Yeah they're usually good. But I think it's a health standard thing. They wouldn't let me return an unopened bottle of shampoo and conditioner. Granted it wasn't plastic sealed though.

        • +3

          @CVonC:
If you do ever return it, it’s going to the trash. Like most return items that are foods/perishable products

      • Reminds me of an obese boss I had a few years ago who spent $20k on a mattress that his (also obese) wife hated. They used for a week and tried to return it, he spent a solid week on the phone to ever level of management within the company that sold him the bed demanding to get a refund. After he exhausted that he spent another week trying to the ACCC and anyone else who he could find to help him.

        • So 20k down the drain? Couldn't him and his wife claim warranty after a "failure" in the springs? But then that doesn't really help with the fact that they didn't want it lol.

        • Eyy karma. Good story lol

    • +6

yes u can! just put it back into the plastic bag it came with then suck the air out with a vacuum cleaner.

      • A vacuum cleaner doesn't have anywhere near the required power to suck one of these back to the original size.

        • yes it does, u just need to step and press it when u vacuum. there ar videos on youtube show u how to do it.

edit:i mean no it doesn't have the power to suck it back to the original size,
but u don't need to, u use ur weight to compress it, suck out the air just to maintain the shape.

What's the alternative? Have I been neglecting possible sleeping positions my whole life that I've been unaware of?

        • +2

@rodinthink: no haha i just see that said a lot on reddit. felt it was my time

      • +9

Why do rednecks hate reverse cowgirl? Because they don't like turning their back on family.

    • +8

Not so great for people who sleep sitting up. lol. Dealbreaker!

Seriously though has anybody had any experience with how comfortable these are? And can you put them up against a wall when you're not using them?

Looking for a solution for my one spare bedroom. Sometimes have people sleep over for a night if they drink at our place. But I'd also like to be able to leave the ironing board set up in that room. No room for both. Tried a self inflating air mattress that I got on a sweet clearance deal at Aldi but the kitten dug her claws into it and my efforts to patch it didn't go so well lol. Thinking maybe a sofa bed? I have a futon in the study but it's so uncomfortable that nobody would sleep on it haha.

      • +1

They last about six months of regular use before they go soft. They'd be an ideal solution. Cheaper than a traffic crash or a UIL TIN.

        • They last about six months of regular use before they go soft

Wow, is that specific to this type of mattress, or similar with all spring mattresses?

I prefer foam mattresses myself, and the factory where I buy them offers 5-year and 10-year warranties. I have tried both types - the 10-year warranty one lasted 12 years, so I went back and bought a 5-year one which lasted a 6-7 years (I wrote the purchase date on the mattresses' cloth tag). Cost was about $350 seven years ago for queen-size with 10-year warranty, probably will have gone up to about $450 by now.

        • +1

@Russ: I've had my Aldi spring mattress in a box for almost a year now and it's been great - one of the best mattresses I've used actually. Paid $150 for a single. The same cost in foam would deteriorate faster, poor quality foam is quite shocking. $99 foam would be even worse. You do have to buy quality foam to get decent life out of them.

$350 would've been a great price for yours if their foam has been that good. Supplier matters, not all foam is created equal.

I wrap myself tightly in the sheet on one side of the bed, then use the tension from it being tucked in on the other side of the bed to sort of dangle off the side, suspended alongside the mattress.

It's super-comfortable. Unless the other side becomes untucked. Then I fall on the floor.

I guess this mattress isn't suitable for me then. That position isn't mentioned.

      • I used to do that myself, many years ago

        • +1

Can't tell if either of you are serious. I choose to call it 'The Hanging Cocoon' though

        • +2

          @captaincabinets:

I only do it on business trips these days, otherwise my wife complains that the sheet is “crushing her” and she “can’t breathe”.

          Women.

  • +10

Don't discount the comfort of these mattresses.. we have an ultra expensive A.H. Beard mattress in our master bedroom and a mattress in a box mattress in one of the guest rooms… if it wasn't for my beautiful wife, I would sneak out and sleep in the guest bedroom every night. It's just so much more comfortable!

Granted my mattress in a box mattress has a small pillow top which this Big W mattress does not, but I'm sure a separate mattress topper could do the job. I've owned another mattress in a box mattress before, which was almost as comfortable.

I can't vouch for the quality of this Big W mattress. I can only give my feedback on mattresses of this type - 'In a box'

    • +16

if it wasn't for my beautiful wife, I would sneak out and sleep in the guest bedroom every night

Funny, a lot of men end up in the guest room without having to sneak there at all because of the wife.

      • +9

        maybe take a shower

        • +1

I told her the same thing, that's how I ended up on the spare bed!

    • -8

You do realize not all 'in a box' mattresses are the same….Some are just foam and no springs, different types of foam, density, etc. it all makes a difference. Your 1 account of a 'in a box' mattress which you never said the brand of doesn't give us much hope in your vouch. Just because a mattress comes in a box doesn't mean it's all the same.

      • +8

My comment is vouching for 'in a box' mattresses in general, which most would be skeptical to purchase. You must have missed my bold disclaimer

Indeed there are a couple of kinds, but I'm comparing like for like pocket spring mattresses like what the OP has posted. What relevance would stating the brand have brought? You even state that not all 'in a box' mattresses are the same lol go back to sleep mate, I think you rolled over on the wrong side of your 'in a box' mattress

        • What's the brand of the 'in a box' one?

        • +1

@captaincabinets: not sure to be honest. The old one was a pocket spring mattress with a very thick pillowtop. Pretty sure I grabbed that from deals direct.
The one in the guest room was a cheapo pocket spring off eBay. Again, not sure of the brand. Definitely not one of the known businesses advertising these mattresses like Koala.

Goes to show that even the cheapos can be semi decent

    • +1

      +1 experience for me too.

Purchased a queen mattress in-a-box from Pillow Talk ~4 years ago and hands down been great to me. I did pay $200 extra than Big W's though.

  • Single is the same price as the Fantastic Furniture Single in a box and I doubt these would be of the same quality. In fact FF have an actual proper single mattress for $89 so this is only of any use if you cannot get to a FF store. Queen is a good price however.

    • +1

do you reckon FF would be more comfortable? I bought a futon from there and it's basically been never used because of how uncomfortable it is haha

      • We have one of the king single in a box mattresses from them and yeah its very comfortable. Also have the $89 single mattress for our daughter and her wiggles bed and its also quite comfortable.

        • +2

If she has a Wiggles bed she's obviously light enough to not crush it to bits :) I'm 80KG+ and I wore my box mattress out pretty quick

        • +2

@kronicmacstigator: She is on a proper mattress not the box one. Have slept on both plenty of times (77kg) and they still seem fine. But of course mileage may vary.

  • +2

We got the Fantastic Furniture one mentioned above a few weeks ago for $99 - wasn't expecting much, but it's actually decent quality:

    https://www.fantasticfurniture.com.au/Categories/Bedroom-%26…

    • Yup was quite surprised just how comfortable it is.

  • +1

if anyone buys a queen one, could you let me know of the quality. Needing one for a spare bedroom.

    • +1

Big W. Anything will be better than this mate…

  • just letting everyone know that i've already placed an order for a queen. the discount code works but the shipping is 27.

got one from aldi. the aldi one is bloody great. needed a big car to transport it, though

    • How much is the aldi one for each of the sizes? Might pick a few up for visitors and guests and get it airtasker'd or something delivered

      • +1

around the same price. it was on clearance. they probably dont have it right now. maybe call aldi and ask. a stranger actually took it to my place for me when she saw me struggling to fit it into my sedan

    • Yes, Aldi one also has a layer of memory form on top.. not sure how effective it is though.

  • +4

"Perfect for back, tummy, or side sleepers"

Almost had me, but i sleep standing up

    • I drift off to the land of nod with the entire weight of my body supported on one hand.

      • You're one of those elusive planche sleepers.

  • inner spring, might suit old fashioned single sleeper, bouncy in a double!

  • +2

Don't forget to remove the mattress from the box. Takes up more space but it's worth it.

  • +2

Have a look at your local Vinnies for refurbished mattresses (i.e. they strip off and replace the covers/paddings/soft materials etc). Every so often there are some very good ones that show up, and even with out the original covers, its obvious that they were thousand + ones.

From memory, its 120 for single, 160 for double and 180 for queen.

    • I've seen brand new ones in plastic at Vinnes/Lifeline. I think they get them from businesses who have excess.

      • +1

They ARE the refurb ones. New covering and in plastic bags.

        • But why would they refurb a mattress? Surely that's more trouble than it's worth.

        • +2

@macrocephalic: haha. Why is anything refurbished?

        • As it seems most recycling places charges you to pick up the mattress, then sell them onto op shops. There is a market for it, and they are making $$$$.

        • @John Kimble: Some things are low effort and cost to refurbish - eg: office PC's. You scrub them and reinstall windows, give the inside a blow out with compressed air, and the outside a wipe with some all purpose cleaner - and sell them for $150. Mattresses OTOH, you'd have to take out everything organic, repack them, and put a new outer on (which you have to manufacture to fit the inner) - and what are they worth at the end - maybe a few hundred dollars?

        • @macrocephalic:

The outer are pretty much standard, its only the thickness of the side that differs.

I suspect these are new mattress manufacturers that do this on the side with their spare capacity. So they have all the facilities and material at hand, just cut off and remove the old fabric and put new ones on the old springs.

In any case, it seems like they charge 50 bucks or so to take away old mattresses, and sells them on for 60-80 bucks to Vinnies etc, which then sell them for 120-180. So the process they have is profitable with 100 buck revenue per mattress.

  • I would prefer ALDI folding bed and mattress instead for the same price :)

    It looks extremely thin..

    Measures: 18cm (H) x 153cm (W) x 203cm (D)
    Weighs: 26kg
    Package measurements: 29cm (H) x 29cm (W) x 160cm (D)

For a firm mattress, get the Lazybed one, though your female partner may not like it, to which I say add a single mattress topper
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/352968

Unfortunately for me I got the Onebed version, as I thought it was the Lazybed version'
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/352558

Still good, but not as firm. Probably more suited for girls

    • +3

      It looks extremely thin.

Still good, but not as firm.

      That's what she said.

(Ok I'll show myself off to the guest room now, again)

  • Plot twist: mattress is 2cm thick.

  • "Suitable for one sleep only" - implied… not explicit.

  • My advice is to never buy beds with bonnell springs. They are horrid and you'll regret it. Worth investing a bit more on something that you spend 1/3 of your life doing routinely!

    • why are they horrid?

      • Cheap, uncomfortable and not great for support or sleeping. Look up Bonell vs Pocket springs.

  • Adding to opinions on mattresses: love my Ikea HÖVÅG, specially when it was 40% off :)
