How Many Raw Eggs a Day Should I Consume?

I'm looking to get a bit healthier and lose a couple of kilos only. I want to switch from meat to raw eggs for a while. How many eggs per day should I consume?

I'm thinking of having them raw to cut down on cooking time and washing up so I can spend more time on Ozbargain.

*** Update***

Just consumed 2 raw eggs for the first time at 1.00pm, I now feel very full for the cost of $0.50. This could save me a few bucks.

Update

Just consumed 2 raw eggs at 11.14am 22/02. I made an interesting observation, there is no warning sign regarding consuming raw eggs on the package.

update

Just had the 6th raw egg of the day, feeling great so far!

update Last 2 eggs of the day down the hatch, smoking it! More being delivered tomorrow!

update 4 raw eggs so far today, feeling great! Saved heaps of money this week!

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has contracted food poisoning from eating raw egg. So far we are drawing a blank which is very interesting!

Update

We have many users who have differing opinion regarding a 1 in 20,000 chance of getting salmonella after eating a raw egg. Do we have any number bods out there that can explain to everyone? Much appreciated.

*8 raw eggs today, quick and cheap, 1 in 20,000, great odds!

Op, you don't see any other health risks eating raw eggs…. Salmonella?

  • +7

    U should just eggcersise

    • +3

      You've cracked it.

  • +1

Eat as many as you want, I won't tell you the risks. Ill let Darwinism take care of this.

  • the internet will catapult us to great things they said….

  • Assuming this isn't a phat troll,

you can cook a big batch of 12-24 boiled eggs and eat them throughout the week.

    • +1

Why settle for boiled eggs when you can have frittata?

    • Peeling them is such a pain though! That's why I opt to steam poach my eggs in the rice cooker.

    • This is not true. When you boil an egg you destroy its protective membrane. You can't leave boiled eggs and not eat them it's asking for trouble.

  • +1

Why not look into something like Soylent?

Switch 100% to it (via something like JimmyJoy.com), and you're paying about $8 per day for all your meals and all your nutrition. Should generally be cheaper and more pleasant than what you're doing…

I've been doing it for 2 months now - lost 4kg's pretty easily and saving a tonne of money and time in terms of food preparation.

    • But….soylent is people.

      • +1

World is overpopulated as it is - you're also doing your part in making life sustainable for everyone else.

OP is asking for advice on literally how to suck eggs?

  • eat insect instead… cheap cheap..

  • "You may be surprised to learn that the digestibility and absorption of egg protein is much greater in cooked eggs. One study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, found that the availability of egg protein is 91% with cooked eggs and only 50% with raw eggs.2 That means a raw egg would only provide 3 grams of digestible protein. Compared to eating a whole cooked egg, which contains almost 6 grams of protein.

The higher digestibility of protein in cooked eggs is likely due to structural changes caused by cooking. Another reason for the difference in digestibility may be Trypsin Inhibitors. Trypsin is an enzyme that breaks down proteins and may be blocked by enzymes in raw eggs. Heat will destroy some of the functional properties of protein, such as inhibiting trypsin, so that the protein is more readily digested."

    • Spot on

    • That site is run by the egg industry itself. Terrible source of information because the only thing they want is for you to eat as many eggs as possible and they could care less about your health.

      • Diji1

If they just wanted you to eat as many eggs as possible they would say just eat two raw eggs instead.

They don't care if you eat them raw or cooked. But it is about the bioavailability of the protein in eggs.

Honestly op can eat them either way, but to make the most of them nutritionally he is better off cooking them.

Anyway if you prefer a different source be served:

      • Couldn't care less….

hi op please keep us updated and let us know if you ded

    • I'm still alive but if i'm ded i will PM you.

  • If you manage to eat only 1 egg you’ll reduce it to 25 cents. Future looks bright

  • Exactly 23

  • I'm looking to get a bit healthier and lose a couple of kilos only. I want to switch from meat to raw eggs for a while. How many eggs per day should I consume?

    NEWS FLASH

Did you know that being healthy + lean is achieved via a holistic approach?
i.e you have to control your sugar, salt and carb intake at a minimum + exercise.
No point eating the leanest food and having a case of beer / week, or eating junk, or sitting and watch Game of Thrones marathon all weekend without moving.

Just consumed 2 raw eggs for the first time at 1.00pm, I now feel very full for the cost of $0.50. This could save me a few bucks.

Your method will fail in approximately 4-6 weeks.
You will either develop an intolerance to eggs, get sick/vomit or worse.

    • +1

"Your method will fail in approximately 4-6 weeks.
You will either develop an intolerance to eggs, get sick/vomit or worse."

But I'm only swapping meat for eggs. I'm still eating fruit/veg and other protein rich food. You are making wild claims!

  • +1

    why just eggs?

theres lots of other cheap things as well.

celery, bell peppers, air popped corn etc

    • I'm only looking to swap meat for eggs, still eating fruit/veg and so on.

      • Fair enough. There's no reason you can't boil the eggs and add some pepper.

If weight loss is the aim. Cut the fruits out, the sugar isn't necessary.

Hopefully you're not drinking fruit juice either.

        • I rarely drink juice, I love fruit though. Why cut all fruit out, watermelon is one of the most alkaline fruits on the planet, the seeds are full of goodness and the skin can be turned into chutney.

  • Just calculate your tdee and cut off 200-300 cals. Make sure that you're getting at least 1.5g x your body weight in protein. Do that consistently and losing weight is like magic. Also, just scramble your eggs it takes literally < 5mins.

But if you're actually lazy and don't care what you eat. Try this. Again, consistently.

    • Ahh.. the starvation method, that always works.. ;)

    • High protein diets are very unhealthy, they destroy the kidney's and cause calcium to leach out from the bones causing osteoporosis.

      • A high diet dominated by one food source of anything is unhealthy. Unprocessed food and a balance of carbohydrate, protein and vegetables are all the average person needs to worry about.

        • Both of these points are incorrect, there are large populations that live exactly like this and have much lower rates of diseases caused by diet.

They also never had anything like 50% of their populations dying early because of diet. There were almost no obese people.

  • +1

if you really want to go down this path; blend it with banana and blueberries

if you get a bad egg, the chances of salmonella poisioning are high.

  • Please state whether you're human or canine? If canine, what breed?

  • -1

Eggs are very unhealthy, 300mg of cholesterol per egg, as much as 4 bigmacs. I'm sending Darwin Awards the link to your post, they will be watching you closely.

    • +1

Wow, just wow. You way want to do a little research. I think the Darwin awards would be much more interested in you!

      • -1

You want me to do a little research like you have? I have done a lot unlike you.

Eating eggs will raise your cholesterol causing heart disease. https://nutritionfacts.org/2015/08/20/what-do-eggs-do-to-our…

        • +1

So you compared a big mac to an egg, missed out hundreds of other variables, then accuse me of not researching even though I'm actively discussing the topic with dozens of other 'sensible' users. Get on your bike you cheeky little scamp!

        • +2

I think you need to read that article again. Here's a brief summary of the Findings, "the researchers concluded that egg consumption was found to be non-detrimental to endothelial function and cholesterol levels".
Perhaps you have another study that supports your argument.
          Good luck.

        • @4sure: But the study was flawed, as Dr Greger points out. Prior to the study, the test subjects already had extremely high levels of cholesterol: their cholesterol absorption was maxed out. "However, a fat-free, cholesterol-free egg substitute was found to be beneficial. That is, not eating eggs lowers cholesterol levels and improves endothelial function—and that’s what these people needed. Their arteries were already hurting, they needed something to bring the fire down, not more matches."

    • +1

Sorry, but where on earth are you getting your information from? Because according to my information the average egg has:-

      90Calories
      7 Grams Fat
      184mg Cholestrol
      95mg Sodium
      70mg Potassium
      6 Grams Protein

Along with Vitamin A, Calcium and Iron.

      • Sounds pretty healthy to me. I'm going for another 2 eggs before bed!

    • This is old dogma. Cholesterol is required in the bodies process of creating steroid hormones/ androgen.

      • "You don’t need to eat foods that contain cholesterol. Your body can produce all the cholesterol it needs."
        Source: Better Health Victoria

        • I agree. But just because it has cholesterol doesnt make it bad

  • +1

    None!

Cook the (profanity) thing and eat it. Eat like 3-4 boiled eggs a week and your body will thank you.

    • Why 3-4 a week? How did you arrive at this conclusion?

      • +3

I don't really like egg all that much. lol

      • +1

Not sure why you were negged on that. It's a good question.

        • The herd mentality I'd imagine.

  • +5

    Next month's topic:
Contracted Salmonella - what to do?

    • +1

      I'll take my 1 in 20,000 chance!

      • But it's not just 1 in 20k. If you eat 6 a day that's 6 in 20k. the dice gets rolled daily.

        • +2

We all roll the dice with every thought, every movement, every word.

        • -1

Actually it's not. It's one in 20,000 every time you eat one.
Just like it's one in 16,000,000 every time you buy a lottery ticket.
It doesn't go down to one in $8,000,000 when you buy two.

        • @4sure: If he eats 4 a day, that will be 4/20000 no?

        • +1

          @djmm:
No. The chance of not getting salmonella is 19999/20000 each time so (19999/20000) to the power of 4. The chance of getting it on any of those occasions is 1 - (199999/20000)^4

Think of it this way. The chance of rolling a 6 on a dice 1/6. If you roll the dice six times the chance of getting a 6 is NOT 6/6 - that would mean in 6 rolls you would have to roll a 6. Instead, it is the chance of NOT rolling one once - to the power of 6 (this is the chance of not rolling one all six times) then 1 minus this (for the opposite - the chance of rolling one at least once, which is around 78%

For the salmonella problem, say he eats 4 a day for a year. What’s the likelihood of contracting salmonella?
          4x365=1460
          1-(19999/20000)^1460=8%

I wouldn’t want to take that chance!

        • +1

@Quantumcat: Thanks - my head hurts but 8% sounds mighty high!

        • -1

@Quantumcat: if you rolled a dice 6 times, chances are you would roll a 6. The odds are 1 in 6 for each individual turn, but 6 in 6 for 6 turns.

        • +1

@OzzyOzbourne: err no. You're saying if you roll a dice six times, that a 6 MUST come up?

You can say that about each of the other faces too - you're saying in 6 rolls, a 1 must come up? What about a 2? Or a 3? You're saying that if you roll a dice six times, you HAVE to get exactly one 1, one 2, one 3, one 4, one 5 and one 6. So, a series of rolls like 1,3,3,5,2,6 is impossible. Just think about that for a minute.

Or for something simpler, say a coin (which is really a two-sided dice). A head has 1/2 chance of being thrown. Using your maths, then, in two throws a head MUST come up. So if we throw a tails, then the next throw MUST be heads. Wait a second. This means the 50% has become 100%, and now a series of throws of heads, heads and tails, tails are now impossible….

In probability, to find the chance of two independent events both happening, we multiply their probabilities. So if we wanted to find the chance of not getting a six twice in a row when rolling a dice, we would multiply 5/6 by 5/6 (the chance of getting a six is 1/6 so the chance of not getting one is 5/6). This is (5X5)/(6X6) or in other words (5/6)^2 which is 25/36. So the chance of this not happening (ie getting a six on either one or both of the rolls) is 1 - 25/36 = 11/36
For getting a six on at least one of six rolls, same thing: not getting a six on any roll = (5/6)^6 = around 0.33 so the chance of getting a six on at least one roll = 1 - 0.33 = 0.67 (edit: just realised I made a mental calculation error on my previous comment)

    What a shitpost.

    • Why?

      • +1

        because troll

        • Wrong. Or 'because wrong' as you would put it.

        • +1

@volcanoeqcycle: Who cares? Why do you need reassurance from a forum to eat your eggs!? Eat them! Scrambled! Boiled! Fried! Raw! Enjoy them! It's fkn eggs.. just eat them and STFU.

        • @apey2000: I asked how many to eat not how to cook them. Perhaps if you actually read the original post it would help you. I'd tell you to STFU as well but I'm off to prepare more eggs. BTW lavender oil has a great calming effect….

        • +2

          @volcanoeqcycle:
I'm with you apey. This whole thread is a waste. OP asks a question and then when anyone offers a contrary point of view or idea they get aggressively shot down or agued against.
OP either needs some friends or just likes the attention.

        • @swimmingtoad: I'm just enjoying my raw eggs talking to mostly lovely people on the world wide web.

        • @swimmingtoad: Exactly right!

        • @volcanoeqcycle: Raw or cooked?

        • @4sure: To be or not to be? That is the question.

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them?

        • @volcanoeqcycle: lavender oil is poisonous

        • +1

@volcanoeqcycle: I had to learn the whole soliloquy at school after being caught throwing snowballs at the headmaster. Ironically it sparked my love of Shakespeare.

        • What a shitpost.

          because troll

  • +1

Why dont you change the question to "how much food poisoning do I give myself daily"?

    • It's a 1 in 20,000 chance, better chance of getting badly hurt in a car accident after 20,000 trips.

      • +1

"better chance of getting badly hurt in a car accident after 20,000 trips"
Umm.. It would be the same chance?

        • +1

Yes, phew, I'm glad I don't drive anymore! I'll eat a cooked egg on the train instead.

      • +1

Unless you drink, drive tired, text or 'interact with your passengers' whilst driving.
Then the odds really come down.

  • +1

No idea how many you should eat.

I ate raw eggs on a regular basis as a kid.

Tastes even better when blended with some sugar. - Everything tastes better with sugar and oil LOL.

    Don't recall ever getting sick.

    • Iv'e heard many people doing the same with no ill effects. Iv'e been fine so far as well.

  • You'd better run egg!!!

  • +1

If you bought a sous vide machine you can pasteurise the eggs making them safe to eat "raw".

  • +3

    Troll post for sure

  • +1

OP, you can avoid contracting salmonella by drilling a 6mm hole through one end of the egg and immediately sucking the contents out through a straw; minimising exposure to air cuts down the chance by five nines….

  • +1

There is no benefit to eating them raw. Don't believe everything you saw in the Rocky movie.

    • Except it takes about 1 hundredth of the time to consume. How much is your time worth?

      • Your time is worth nothing because no one is prepared to pay for it.

    • He beat Apollo Creed, fact.

  • 42 eggs.

  • I have two in my pro-workout shake - but have as many as you want. Eggs are the only REAL Superfood.

    • +1

Do you not drink amateur workout shakes?

      • Lawl! Pre*workout.
