  • Any region locks on ps4? From what i have read only dlcs are region locked

    • +6

Nope, discs are all region free

      • +5

The DLC is region locked though. For example, I am not able to get the free car offered by SEA PSPlus (even though I have the PSPlus membership, it will only add the free car to a SEA version GT Sport, I only have the AUS version). Not a big deal for GT Sport, since you can get a free car by playing enough hours each day.

        • DLC is locked to the region of the base game, but not to the console's region.

If it's not hardware region locked, it's not considered region locked. You could have bought a SEA copy of the game.

        • @lostn: Some games are not truly region free. I had some cross over between my 14 day AUS PS Plus trial and the 1 year SEA PS Plus membership, games I downloaded via AUS store cannot be continued once the AUS PS Plus expired (despite I own supposedly the same games in SEA PS Plus store). I had to install the SEA version (which is not a problem). The problem is that saved games need to be converted. Some games allow you to convert whereas some games simply won't (and for those games, I had to start all over again).

So, while you can play games from other region on an AU PS account, your existing saved games may or may not work (it's up to the game maker to decide whether you can convert the saved games or not).

Again, it's not an issue here. If you have AU version of GT Sport, you would continue playing that one with this VR kit. If you haven't owned GT Sport, you would simply play the US version included.

        • @netsurfer:

Free games from PS Plus are locked to the region of the PS Plus you purchased. Again, not hardware locked. If some games crossed over, they weren't officially supported.

"Officially" SEA and AU/EU are counted as a different region. It shouldn't be assumed that they would be cross compatible.

Save games are tied to the region of the game. That's because of some differences in each region the game (language being an obvious one), giving it a different product ID. For example, trophies are separate. So if you want 3 sets of trophies for the same game, you can buy the same game from 3 different regions.

There are occasional differences in content found in various versions of the games also. It's just much easier for them to treat each region of the game as a separate game. This is the way it has always been. Otherwise you could run into compatibility issues due to different coding in each game.

If your machine has no way of playing a game from another region, only then do we consider it truly region locked. Sony have moved away from that philosophy after the PS2 (PS3 has only a small handful of games that are region locked).

        • @lostn: It's not just PSN games (i.e. not just digital releases). Physical disc versions would have the same issue.

Anyway, if I played GT Sport (AU disc version) on my SEA PS account, I still cannot get the freebies. There is also the inconsistency that some games you can convert save games while some you simply cannot.

        • @netsurfer:

Yes. All games (physical or disc) have DLC connected to the region of the base game. Save games should also not be cross compatible with other region versions of the game.

          Working as intended.

There is also the inconsistency that some games you can convert save games while some you simply cannot.

None of them should allow you to convert between regions at all. That some of them do should be seen as a bonus.

When a console is considered region locked, it means that software won't play on another region's console. It does not apply to DLC or save games, or freebies on PSN. That's a separate consideration. If you can get around the limitation by keeping the DLC region consistent with the base game, you are not locked out.

On the Wii for instance, it was impossible to play US games on an AU console (unless modded). That's true region locking.

        • @lostn: So the bottom line is that only the base game, from the ability to install's point of view, is not region blocked. However, once you start playing it, save games, DLC, bonus contents are all region specific (essentially region locked).

So, basically, once you start playing a game (i.e. you got it from PS Plus or free trial), if you later found a bargain deal for that game (for a different region), you shouldn't expect your save games to load.

Companies providing save game conversion actually understand this region specific rubbish is not good for customers.

      • -3

Why did 4 people vote positive for incorrect and misleading information?

        • Because they use the Blu-ray/DVD movie/video disc's definition of region free. If you purchased a game disc in a different region, you can generally play it here. For XB1, I was able to mix and match AU and US region of games and codes (had to use US VPN to activate the US codes, but once activated, games appear seamless/compatible - I can resume my games), but then again, that's US and AU (SEA is tricky because sometimes you get 3 versions of the same title (in different languages), but I only install/play English version yet a number of games refuse to load my save games). SEA get more freebies and goodies. Pity they don't work on AU based games.

        • @netsurfer: If you buy SEA games exclusively, you get around this problem.

        • @lostn: Buying AUS games is fine. The main thing is that if you liked a game after trying it out, or from trial PS Plus, then you purchase PS Plus or the same game for a different region, need to remember that you will need to re-install (even though it is basically the same game) and that previous save games may not work (if the game doesn't provide a converter, it probably won't).

Though there is no hardware region lock as such (for games), the software region set on the games could make things a bit annoying in some situations.

is this the revised version or original?

    Edit this is old version

    • -1

Whats the difference? Is the new one worth the extra?

      • Would also like to know. Also do you need a pro ps4 to use vr?

      • +1

The newer model has better cable management, better earphone jack position…thats about it I think.

I've got the older one - the better cable management would be a plus - the cable sux.

        • +4

Also has HDR Passthrough so you dont need to unplug the hdmi from your PSVR everytime you want to use HDR content on your 4K TV.

        • +2

          @pizzaguy:
Nah, HDR is actually fantastic. It's comparable to HDR with cameras. It's basically just able to display much more subtle colour differences. I find it a more impressive tech spec than 4K itself, honestly.

        • @OfTheOverflow: For whatever reason the HDR on my entry level Sony is useless. I think it's because it's only 'pretend HDR' on my basic model. The whole screen looks very washed out, and much better in regular mode (even with the special HDMI cable).

        • @Where's_That_Cake:

Ahhh that was it! - i thought there was something else!

        • @OfTheOverflow: HDR brings the saturation up a notch (highlights and shadows both bumped up). However, it is a bit gimmicky though. Games need to support it, therefore they have been colour re-adjusted. If HDR is truly that good, then normal games should be able to benefit for it.

Obviously, the game makers and the TV manufacturers are going to indicate they are using colours which weren't available to TVs which can only display 16.7 mil colours, but it is clear they do change the overall saturation for HDR games a fair amount. Also, for some 10-bit displays, despite they are capable of some level of HDR, if they are not HDR enabled, you cannot use them to play HDR games. There is also different grades of HDR TVs/Monitors. It is possible to re-adjust the colours so SDR TVs can have HDR like look. Then, we can really check the difference.

However, as part of the HDR push, displays are able to display more colours, improved contrast, so that's good for consumers.

        • -7

          @OfTheOverflow:

Alright, I guess it's convenient in the way it's automated by PS4.

Also, I can see comments vary.

BTW - all the negs I got for asking a question. Is it by fanboys or is it just a seemingly harsh way of answering "not a gimmick"?

        • +6

@pizzaguy: it’s probably caused you called something “a gimmick” just cause you don’t understand it.

        • +2

          @pizzaguy:
I can't speak for everyone else, but I'm not a Sony fanboy.
Your comment reeked of ignorance though, hence the neg.

        • -2

          @CrushJelly:

Seem like an overkill with all the negs. But will keep that in mind.

Thanks to people who actually answered.

  • How reliable is this company? :)

    • +5

They are very number one. Top cameras store in New York. I have had an expensive laptop and other goods sent from them.

    • +5

      Extremely massive and efficient company.
Bought two laptops from them 7 years ago, a spyder pro calibrator, they're awesome!

      • +11

        Extremely massive

    • -1

      Seriously?

    • +1

Awesome company - bought stacks from em, in NY and at work and home - always perfect.

      • +3

same here, brought 1000$ in camera gear when the dollar was above 115USD, but the low dollar and increased postage cost and put a stop to that.

        • +1

not sure about now, but about 15 years ago. they wanted a copy of my driver's licence to process the my first order. not sure if they're doing that these days.

    • Incredibly reliable. They're titans of the industry.

    • Have been there - takes up a whole block in New York - it's huge. A wonderland of photography and electronic gear. Very well known retailer.

    • They pulled a dodgy on me. Sent me 4 hard drives. The serial number of the drives was on the receipt, which I thought was odd. However, the serials on the drives themselves were totally different to what was on the receipt.

This was a warranty problem with one of the drives that had bad sectors. I just sold it on ebay (advertised with a fault) instead. But it was pretty crap of B&H

  • +2

Great work on this deal, got one.
I haven't used B&H for years but they're very reliable and awesome prices.

    • +1

Purchased this from B&H on Mon 19/2, delivered by DHL on Fri 23/2… Is this company any good?? Yep they're one of the best in the USA. Amazing and in many ways faster delivery than many Aussie retailers.

For $300 delivered this can't be beaten.

  • +4

Was just wondering how you were able to get free shipping? Every checkout option seems to add atleast 40USD for me… (don't worry, I see that You just didnt add the USD shipping price in) =P

  • +1

Brought, bought, got one thanks 🙏

  • Great find OP! I'm still having a blast with my PSVR I got last year. Sprint Vector just came out and my arms are stiff and sore haha

  • Meh. PSVR hasn't taken off. Not enough AAA games and support from Sony.

I'd still hold off until more support and newer refreshed hardware.

    • like many new things, it has a chicken or egg problem.

      • +4

Actually, PSVR is a success if you compare it to the whole VR market. It's the top selling solution.
The older and technically superior Valve Vive has only sold around 0.6 Million units.
And the Facebook Rift has sold a little better at around 0.7 Million units.

Around 2 Million PSVR headsets sold, to around 10 Million PS4Pro's and 71 Million PS4-base units.
In contrast to Xbox which has no headset, and has only sold around 1 Million Xbox One X and around 32 Million base-Xbox One units.

There are the Windows 10 "Mixed Reality" headsets from Acer, HP, Samsung, etc etc… but they haven't sold in any quantifiable number (<0.1 Mil).
Based on early impressions, it looks like the Mixed Reality Headsets in Total will struggle to hit even 0.2 Million, however, the Valve Vive looks poised to get more units due to its discounted bundle. Regardless, it doesn't seem like the industry will catch up to Sony.

…and I honestly don't think VR is going to take off much further unless Sony does something drastic like Microsoft did, and make an immersively improved PSVR 2.0 that is bundled in with a graphically improved PS5 in the year 2020. Or you know, Apple.

        Bonus Data:
The previous gen had the PS3 soar to ~85M units, the Xbox 360 to ~83M units, and the WiiU to ~14M units.
Whereas the Nintendo Switch has sold ~10 Million units so far, despite the stock shortages and no holiday sales… much better than the Xbox One (~7M) but not as good as the PS4 launch (~14M). The next test is to see, like the way Sony did, if Nintendo can continue the momentum (which I doubt).

        • -2

Actually, PSVR is a success if you compare it to the whole VR market. It's the top selling solution.

Yes but being the most successful VR HMD is like being the least smelly fart. You still stink.

The older and technically superior Valve Vive has only sold around 0.6 Million units.
And the Facebook Rift has sold a little better at around 0.7 Million units.

That its competitors failed even harder to penetrate the market doesn't mean that PSVR is doing well. Maybe it's doing well compared to its competitors, but it's doing worse than Kinect 1.0 and 2.0. And those aren't exactly considered big successes. There are more than 2 million Kinect 2.0's out there, and I think 10 million 1.0's.

Around 2 Million PSVR headsets sold, to around 10 Million PS4Pro's and 71 Million PS4-base units.
In contrast to Xbox which has no headset, and has only sold around 1 Million Xbox One X and around 32 Million base-Xbox One units.

The One X has been around for only a few months and wasn't produced in big quantities. The PSVR has been around for longer than that and is cheaper.

…and I honestly don't think VR is going to take off much further unless Sony does something drastic like Microsoft did, and make an immersively improved PSVR 2.0 that is bundled in with a graphically improved PS5 in the year 2020.

I don't doubt it. That would certainly help. First gen hardware of any tech is going to be very inferior to revisions that come after it. It will be years away though. The One X is VR compatible. So if MS releases a VR headset that's better than PSVR, it might be that product you were expecting from Sony with PS5 and the new PSVR 2.0. To bundle it in with the console would be a bit expensive though. The XB1 with Kinect at only $500 USD did not take off and had to be dropped. PSVR2.0 + PS5 would cost more than $500 USD.

  • Great price - although shame it's not V2.
Do they have the V2 listed?

    • +2

I believe the Doom Pack is the newer model from research over at best buy - listed as $299 I believe with the $100 off at b&h.

Is $100USD worth the price difference???

  • Will it require a different power adapters?

  • It is pretty tempting, but I'm worried it'll be another gadget I get that I won't get much use out of. I did want to check out that Apollo 11 VR though… It is nearly like a device I'd be better of renting for a month.

    • +1

Same here. I was always thinking "I'll buy at $300, probably just going to gather dust".
The last game-console related things I've bought:
      - PS4
      - XB1
      - WiiU
      - MiiBox 3
      - Switch

I've only used the WiiU and the switch.

      I'll hold off until 200 :)

      • All 3 of the new consoles???

        That's ambitious if you're working at all….!

        • +2

Yep. When I was younger, I used to buy and actually play a lot of games.

Now I want to play them; can't resist a deal on Ozbargain, buy them, but don't have time to play them.

        • +1

@idonotknowwhy: This is exactly my problem. I'm super interested in gaming, the market, graphics, etc, but as I work (in design/development no less) I spend almost zero time actually playing…

      • +2

I'm the same. Waiting until VR matures a bit more. I just won't use it enough to justify pulling the pin at $300.

And, it's still a bit of a messy experience with wires everywhere isn't it? Running out of room and power sockets in the entertainment unit - finely tuned to keep it all neat!

Sub-$200 and my index finger could get twitchy though…

        • +2

Running out of room and power sockets in the entertainment unit - finely tuned to keep it all neat!

I've stacked my consoles on top of each other using plastic stands from Daiso Japan.
It's about as stable as the Australian economy.

Sub-$200 and my index finger could get twitchy though…

          +1

      • +2

Maybe purchase some games next, and you can use the consoles ;)

      • +4

probably just going to gather dust

That's what I think when I see all these bargains for Miele vacuum cleaners…

    • +1

At this price you could buy, use for 6 months and sell on gumtree for $200

    • +1

In that case, I would suggest waiting another year or two.

There will be more VR headsets and more games. Hopefully. Cheaper prices also as more competitors weigh in.

  • +2

If only it was the newer one with HDR passthrough i'd jump on it… though I had one at launch and its definitely not the best VR experience

  • Great price, but I'm waiting for a sub $200 price point, and at that point barely used second hand ones should be down around $150.
That's when I'll take the plunge.

  • +2

So when will they release wireless VR headsets? Pretty lame to deal with long thick cabling especially in 2018.

    • Maybe next gen for double the price

    • +1

Personally anything wireless is a pain in the ass, especially something as immersive as VR you dont want to be stopping half way through something to change batteries.

Granted I have the "newer" model it only has the one cable from the unit which you sit behind you and doesnt get in the way at all, I would rather that than have to worry about a battery running low.

These things are well worth the money and great fun, just pay an extra bit an get the newer model with less wires. (not sure how many this older one has, but the new model only has one).

      • A simple VR headset dock that charges the batteries is all thats needed when not in use

    • There is a problem with delay, you need immediate with VR otherwise people end up feeling sick.

  • This is the old version they are clearing it out

  • Would warranty issues require returning to USA? That'll stop me hitting the buy button

    • Imported controllers have been fixed locally, so if these are lumped into the same group, then they should be fine for here.

  • Is VR fun and worth the price?

    • +1

looks fun but not sure about motion sickness aspect though…
im abit hesitant to buy because i sometimes gets motion sickness

      • I get motion sickness pretty much everytime im on a boat but have no problem with the VR.

You just start with the basic "experiences" and games that dont require much or any movement and work your way up, ive only had problems trying to play the FPS games with normal joystick movements, that + looking opposite way gives me problems. You wont have any issue with teleport moving though.

We've had heaps of family and friends play on it and only one has felt queezy early on. Get VR Worlds and put people in the shark experience, honestly its the best thing ive watched in so long watching how people react to that. You dont have to do anything but look around and no one has had any issues with starting on that.

If they act all tough with that one I put them in the resident evil Kitchen demo, that one always gets people haha.

  • +2

i was on the fence for a long time as to if it would just gather dust, have had mine for 6 months or so now and love it. can not explain how awesome it is. you may only pick it up once a week but it will leave you with a massive smile.most games are pretty short and a bit demoish but there is some gold out there.if 300 isnt going to send you poor do it.

  • +1

Looks like it's $229 USD now.

    • Yep with postage it ends up being ~$340AUD now. Still a pretty good deal but it's still too high imo.

  • This seems like a great deal for anyone looking for the updated headset: https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-VR-Skyrim-Bundle-4/dp/B07…

    Extremely tempted to buy it…

    • +1

Dell US has that bundle for US$279 but dont ship internationally.. but might be OK with a freight forwarder.

      • Thanks, but too late! I ended up buying it from Amazon for 509AUD including shipping. Sure beats the price if I were to buy locally.

        • Saw there were 12 left this morning and went to Amazon after lunch and it's out of stock. So I bought the same bundle from B&H for 501AUD including shipping. I noticed that the shipping has become slightly cheaper at Amazon now compared to this morning.

      • Can you give us the link? I could only find one that costs $349.99 on the Dell US website.

        • It was mentioned on the comments of the Amazon deal linked above - price may have changed

        • @systmworks: Ah I see what you mean. That comment was posted in December when everything was cheaper, unfortunately the price has gone back up. Thanks though.
