FWIW - Aldi beans are $12/kg. They're worth a try.

    • +5

yes, and medium tastes quite nice.

    • +1

Yep, this is what I buy after trying quite a few different beans. Cannot beat the price to performance ratio.

    • +3

Do they have a "Roasted on" date? If not, pass.

      • The premium reserve beans on their site are stated to be roasted for you on the day that you order. It doesn't repeat that statement on the ozbargain 2for1 deal page, but they are the same beans. I would tend to think that it would be the same, but James needs to clarify I think.
        Good beans though.

        • Think ddr0001 is asking if Aldi beans have a roasted date…for $12/kg is guess not

        • @OzBragain: Yep, correct. If people like the Aldi beans, thats great, you are saving a fortune but they will be stale for sure. I want freshly roasted.

        • @OzBragain: In my experience most 'shop' beans have a 'best before' date which is usually exactly 12 months AFTER the packaging date.

    • Cheers for the tip - I've tried a few different brands since I got a decent machine ranging from $10/kg Coles brand to $20/500g Melbourne hipster brand, ended up settling on Lavazza as I like the taste and it's a medium price point, but I'll give Aldi a go next time I'm out.

      • ALDI beans taste definitely better than Lavazza

  • Is PLUNGER the most coarse grind on offer?

    • +12

I would encourage you to look into buying your own grinder as 2kg of beans preground will perish very quickly. Plus, you can experiment on the best grind for your device.

    • +1

Agreed, get your own plunger. You can tell the difference, buy a bag of plunger ground beans, and it smells great the first week, and after that, gone. Grind your own and you get that beautiful smell every time.

      • +1

Agreed, get your own plunger grinder…

        • oops my apologies.

        • +1

@schwinn: yes, would be hard to grind with a plunger :)

    • I just had a look on my grinder. Plunger is the most coarse. As others have said, get yourself a grinder. The Breville Smart Grinder Pro is often on sale here and its a cracker for the money.

  • +2

I used to buy these beans when my friend and I and we'd grind them each week for plunger. Since I changed to an espresso machine the quantity it too much to keep them fresh. If you can split then with multiple friends or go through a lot of coffee perhaps a good deal. The beans are good if you like dark roast strong coffee flavours (Italitan style) with no "fruity" (hipster style) flavours. Should also say they also deliver really quick.

    • +1

I agree on the too much for 1 household usually of for espresso. 2kg would last us 2 months. Not sure if you notice it as much with plunger.

      • Yeah it took us about 4-5 weeks with 2 of us on the plunger and when we got a new order we noticed the flavours improving big time. But the function of making the coffee was fine of course. But it's a whole other story when you're using an espresso machine and trying to get a good 2:1 brew ratio, I find after about 2 1/2 weeks from roast date, it's impossible to grind the beans fine enough to get this. I'm using the Breville btw.

        • +1

Beans usually last pretty well in the freezer. I’m pretty fussy, but I often buy in bulk and freeze them for months.

        • +3

          @marlor: don't do that!
The moisture will deteriorate your beans faster in the freezer than out. Every time your bring them out of the freezer, they build up condensation.

        • +1

          @thedriver:

No, freezer is fine. De-gas them for a few days then put them in an air tight bag, there is no moisture to ruin them.

        • +2

@thedriver: Correct, every roaster ive seen has said freezing them is about the worst thing you can do, it also screws up the oils. If it works for you, thats great but its not advice any coffee pro will provide. At the end of the day, beans are at their best between 5 days to 5 weeks (after roasting), give or take a bit. Nothing you can do will change that.

        • @ddr0001: No coffee pro… like Matt Perger? I'm happy with my frozen beans, and it's better than most other options. I'd still split them with someone if possible.

    • +5

Not for freshly and skillfully roasted with free postage

      • Ok, ill have to try some once my current lot runs out. Too bad it wasnt posted earlier as I was looking out for some different beans to try. If its any good, cost isnt really the issue, but if its not much better then the $12 Aldi stuff, then I'll just stick with that.
Giving Lavazza a go now which was half price last week, not that much better then the cheap Aldi stuff, certainly not worth $30/kg.

        • +4

There's no excuse these days to buy beans from supermarket. What you get there won't be fresh. It will have a 'use by' or 'best before' date. You won't know when the batch was roasted though…

There are so many local roasters around these days - or buy online if not near one - to get your beans roasted on demand. They're fresh. Just give them four days to a week or so to de-gas and away you go. Java!

    • +2

Yeah why buy freshly roasted beans when International Roast is available at Coles…

    • This is really cheap actually. We pay $56 for 500g house blend and 500g decaf from our local roaster.

  • Hi rep
2kg is too much of a risk for first time buyers.
    I would happily try 1kg for $30

    • Look at past deals - bay brand is great quality

  • ++ for Bay Beans, been ordering from them for last few years. Promptly response and quick postage as well.

  • Hi Rep, can you please confirm this is sent as 1kg bags as I need to share with a friend.

    • You can PM the rep here

    • +1

Not the rep but have ordered multiple times and anyways had it come in 2 x 1kg bags.

      • Agree

  • $49.70 is a good deal for 2kg of premium beans. would cost $30+/kg locally.

  • +1

I’ve had bay beans before, whilst it was nice I preferred manna beans coffee. I’m prepared to give them another try to see if things have changed.

Any idea when this deal expires?

    • Hard to go past Manna Beans and their 1kg posted deal which I've been on for years. I'd like to try this but 2kg is just way too much and would end up being no better than aldi or any other supermarket bean where you have no idea when they were roasted.

@Rep: Does your bean come with a roasting date? That might make the deal for a few people if it is.
Also Rep, what's the provenance of your "Bay Beans Premium Reserve Coffee Beans" ?
      Thanks.

    • Where is the 1kg deal? I can only see 2kg ones here.

  • +3

Thanks for reposting but just to note previous deal actually never expired. I have been buying bay beans through the previous oz bargain 2 for 1 link for years.

    • Thanks for confirming, I thought that might have been the case.

  • +1

We have been ordering these beans for 4+ years and have always received them very quickly (1-2 days to Wollongong). The quality is excellent - the origin of the beans changes but we have never found a batch that we haven't liked. We have tried several other coffee suppliers when they have super specials but always come back to Baybeans. Their espresso blend is also great - but more expensive so we're happy with this continuing Premium reserve offer. We grind them for use in the home machine and a nanopresso.

  • +1

As above, I've been using the above link. I didn't put it on Ozbargain, because I wasn't sure if James (@baybeans - are you thereeee??) wanted the attention. I personally messaged him about 4 years ago, asking if it's OK to use the link, and he said OK.

Beans are always delivered on time, fresh (You can tell the bags are still expanding). No real 'roast date' for the purists, but excellent beans, excellent value.

God I hope this post on OzB doesn't kill the deal by an avalanche of orders.

    • Why would it kill the deal? The offer page is marked 'ozbargain deal'…

      • Because the original intention was to offer a discount to Ozbargain back in 2013… This purpose might've changed after he's built sufficient brand recognition etc. Who knows how James feels now.

        • Heh. James has had five years to remove the page. I'd say James is fine and happy we're all discussing Bay Beans.

  • I can't seem to find any clarification on 'roasted date'. Do they provide this information or not?

Leads me to think maybe these are 'old' stock they want to move!

Also are the bags resealable clip-lock style bags or not?

    Any help appreciated,

    Michael

    • The Coffee Beans are roasted to order - 'all Bay Beans orders are roasted fresh to ensure maximum freshness and quality.'

    • +1

The bags are NOT resealable clip-lock style. They do have the 1 way valve, but no resealable clip-lock. If you have some older bags from other roasters I recommend separating and rebagging quickly. Too much hassle for myself, I just use an Ikea clip lock over the giant bag.

As mentioned above, they are roasted fresh, probably not stamping the roast date helps him cut down on effort/cost (he's no longer a 'boutique' roaster, adding a manual stamp to a commercial production might help him save a few dollars to give you a $50 deal.

Also, in my experience (4+ years) ordering with him, they are roasted fresh, fresh enough for me. It's not 2-3 days fresh when they arrive, but maybe 3-7 days by the time they arrive. I tell by the expansion of the bag when they arrive and are unboxed (if they keep expanding it means they are still releasing the CO2 post roast which is good).

The real challenge is finishing your 2 KG's worth while it is still fresh.

      • Order placed!

2kg is enough for around 6-7 weeks depending, putting a roasted date isn't that big a deal, some places including coffee snobs just write it with a nikko.

I just hope they're not another batch of beans that I have to use as fertiliser!

        • +1

What beans have you used as fert? in my opinion if I'm paying 25+ per kilo I bite the bullet and finish the bag, then swear off it… Stuff never to be use are like anything sold at woolworths. Kind friends have bought great beans for me, but pre-ground so that's out of my house after 2 weeks.

        • You can use them as fert after you've made coffee with them regardless.

        • @schwinn: Geez heaps, quite a few batches from c/s have been, well, undrinkable. Lots from 'boutique roasters' Gloria Jeans, Grinders, Map, Premium Organic versions of Vittoria, Aurora & a few others. I bought Earth Coffee for many years but since the owner Brett sold the Cafe front for the roasting side of things I've struggled to find a decent replacement. Let's just say my garden is very lush & well fertilised!

        • @Micko179:

I hope you don't consider Gloria Jeans, Grinders, Map, Vittoria and Aurora boutique roasters.

I used to buy from Manna but switched to http://mycuppa.com.au/ last year. Haven't tried Bay Beans but any of these three would be better/fresher than what you've been buying

        • @OzBragain: I wouldn't call any of those sophisticated or for specialised clientele so no, I don't consider them 'boutique' at all!. IMHO Manna are no different to the likes of Simply Beans & several others around, overrated & overpriced!

        • @Micko179:

Good to see you've moved away from supermarket beans. Hope you find some beans you like

        • @OzBragain: Never stated I had gravitated towards or moved away from 'supermarket' beans! In fact, my go to fall back beans are Harris No:4 Espresso (goes without saying that I make sure they're as fresh as can be!

        • @Micko179:

No one's having a go at you champ. The brands you fertilised your garden with were unlikely to be fresh (generally referred to as supermarket coffee) and I think you'll have a better chance of finding something you like now that you've moved away from them.

  • How long will the deal be running OP?

  • For all those who are thinking of buying this deal, just a word of caution, I received my order yesterday & promptly switched on the Expobar only to be extremely disappointed, think I'll call James & see if I can swap the unopened bag for an Espresso Master brew as they are rather mild for my palate, fantastic crema, just not enough strength!

EDIT: ALSO THERE DEFINITELY IS A ROASTED ON DATE STAMPED ON THE TOP SEAL OF EACH BAG, SO THE INFORMATION STATING OTHERWISE IS INCORRECT!!! MY BAGS ARE BOTH STAMPED 19/02/18

Anyone else in Perth order and still awaiting the arrival of their beans? I noted the delivery information on the confirmation email said 3-5 days for Perth and Regional WA.

Yep I know I can contact the seller, but thought I'd check here before bugging the poor guy :)

    • Same here, in Perth and still waiting. 10 business days, so I'll be asking the seller for feedback today.

      • I'm in perth and and just ordered. THe deal said it was expired but i could still order.

Hope it doesn't take 10 days though!

      • Mine actually ended up arriving the next day. Hope yours arrives soon!
