Close to the cheapest i have seen on this chip - downside you have to buy a Z370 board no H's or B's on this series. Now i am on the hunt for a good RAM deal

No H or B series chipsets is a total joke from Intel. Must be costing them a fortune in 8 series processor sales.

There is a ASRock Z370 Pro4 Intel Z370 for $169 from MSY. Price is fairly reasonable I think.

      • Such a tempting deal…

Yeah not a bad deal but I just dont need to spend that sort of money on a mobo and I refuse to just buy a Z series to compensate for the clowns at Intel.
The longer they take for the B/H, the closer ill be to just grabbing a Ryzen.

i got one of these 8400s - it's wonderful, bang for buck, temperature, etc. It's great. Very happy.

  • How does this compare to Ryzen 2400G APU in single thread? Was tossing up between this and Ryzen and tempted by the savings in not having to buy a discrete graphics card. And cheaper motherboard too

The Vega graphics will provide roughly 95% the performance of a GTX 1030, which is a GPU that costs $100 AUD. In other words, the Vega GPU performance won't blow you away, but it is the best integrated graphics seen on a desktop chip to date.

Just note that as soon as you put in a discrete GPU, you're no longer using the integrated graphics, rendering it a moot purchase if you ever plan to buy a GPU sometime later.

      • Thank you so much for this. Definitely a hard call, could easily be justified to go either way

  • has it even improved much from old cpus?

edit saw scrimshaws link to geekbench: Now has 6 cores and perfomaance is significantly better

  • It's the best bang for buck CPU ATM. Nice deal.

  • WTF I bought my i7-4820k on the 14/09/2014 for $320 and this processor seems barely any better? Guess I won't be upgrading any time soon. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/160631?page=6

    • CPUs really haven’t been getting drastically faster for ages now. At least they now have 6 cores in the mainstream. That should be hugely beneficial to video editions and the like.

All things into perspective and the growing price on precious metals, this chip is pretty darn good. Also much less on the power consumption

      • I lament the huge amount of energy spent on crypto mining, just think about all that pollution. Unfortunately as an arms race any savings in energy efficiency is competed away quickly.
