$26/TB I might bite on one finally

  • Reviews and Reddit say its shuckable. Its cheaper than the WD 8TB My Book one that's still on sale, but I'm not certain about the quality of the Seagate, they don't normally score well on the Backblaze Hard Drive Stats report

    • My intended use is to leave it as a USB external drive where data will be written once and then rarely accessed/deleted. It's also going to be used as a first line backup of my NAS. If I was going to shuck it to use as an internal drive to constantly read/write to it - then I'd say that the extra money for something that will most likely contains a WD Red over a Seagate Archive drive would be better suited for the extra money.

    • Ordered 2. I'll give them a good hard pre-clear before adding them to my Unraid pool. See how they go. I could probably stand to lose a few terabytes of Grey's Anatomy to be honest.

    • depends which seagate is inside ….. archive drive or iron wolf NAS ???

for backups any if the units are fine (archive) as a second data drive or torrent drive you need one made for more active use.

      • I believe the drives are either an archive or barracuda. I got the later with an order a month back. Didn’t see mention that Irin Wolfs were an option.

    • Is it that exact model which is bad on the Blackblaze report? Seagates seem to vary wildly, one model being just like normal disks, others a lemon.

      • Not sure about the model. The ones claimed on that reddit thread are newer models than Backblaze has reported. DM004 vs DM002. I think that price and availability is a large part of their decision making, as they don't lose data when one fails.

I'll be using them in unRaid, so I need two drives to fail to lose anything, then its only what is on those drives, which I can control.

    • It’s really easy to open.

      I used this guide

      https://youtu.be/82D_VxVeolc

      Took me a few minutes.

  • What’s the best way to pay? Choose usd or aud?

    • USD and paying with a card that doesn't have currency conversion fees like 28 degrees or Citibank (unless this rule of thumb has changed).

      • Thanks

    • My son has a CC for an account his father put him on as able to access the USA account.

If he used that card, but had the drives shipped here to AU, would that incur the fees??

      Ta!

  • This is about the 15th time this drive has been made a deal. Maybe we should just make it permanent?

  • You will need an power adaptor… plus its pretty much a lottery.. which drive you will get..

A crap slow Archive drive (with a multitude of issues), or the barracuda..

plus after the first 30 days. (warranty my amazon).. you are pretty much on your own.. (now warranty)..

The failure rate of these drives.. seems no insignificant..

I bought mine for $265 - $270 or so locally.. during the sale.. with 3 years warranty…..

If pretty much up to you if the $50-90 saving is worth the hassles.. and risks.. of buying overseas.. plus loosing warranty..

I bought a few from amazon when the difference was around the $150 mark.. between the local and imported price..

At a $50 difference.. I don't think its worth the risk.

    • Staticice showing the cheapest are around $90 more (although there is a Lacie Porche 8TB that can be had with eBay PRESENT20 coupon for $280). Where are you finding 8TB drives for $50 more?

    • Just need a socket converter. The included power adapter is 110-240v.

    • Oh gross, is this thing an archive (SMR) drive? ???

  • I think the worry is reliability, Seagates name seems to vary wildly from model to model - and shucked disks, generally lose the warranty.

The price however is fantastic, quite tempting.

EDIT: Hard to tell if SMR or not, gross. Nope, not in my NAS.

  • Ordered this on the last deal.

    DOA.

    Returned for a replacement.

    DOA.

    Returned that too.

Refunded original costs + $15 USD each for return shipping.

Cost $105 AUD to return them.

So I ended up down about $65 with nothing but a bunch of wasted time to show for it.

So I have no faith in the companies delivering these. The boxes weren't obviously trashed but it seems likely they get bumped about a lot in single packages. They were delivered by a different company each time too so it's not like there's one bad one.

go on live chat with amazon and tell them the shipping refund of 15 did not cover it. i did the same when i had to return a nvidia shield tv, cost around $60 aus to send, they only refunded $15, ended up getting $60US refunded

    • How are you paying for postage to return a defective product?? Amazon give RA numbers to post with… Just like every other big company does if there is an issue with an item. Which means it's free. I don't understand how you were made to pay for returning it. Something sounds off!

      • -1

No, they don't give you some kind of code to get free postage. You have to post it back and then they give you a $15 refund.

        • I've had Amazon give me Return Authority numbers twice! One for a 4TB Seagate close to two years ago and a PC power supply about a year ago. They send you an email to print out which has the address details and the RA number to put on the package. Unless they've changed their policy recently. I would make sure you get one and tell customer service about it. Sounds like you guys are getting screwed!

  • While I understand that people shucking these into NAS etc won't be concerned with getting an archive drive in there IMHO they are "not fit for purpose" if such a drive is enclosed. They are designated as "external drives" implying fit for normal use IMO.

As these seem to be covered by Amazon I'd be asking for an immediate refund/replacement.

  • For those who have shipping forwarders this might be of interest

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easystore-8tb-external-usb-3-…

160USD for WD Reds as opposed to WD white labels in the Mybook.

I'm just about to pull the trigger on 2 of these.

    • How much would a forwarder do for 7 of the damn things?

      • very good question.

I signed up for the amex deal for MyUS.com earlier this year. Is the auspost one cheaper?

      • "Heads up! This item is limited to 2 per customer."

        • Price just jumped to $200 per drive anyway. It's a cruel world for data hoarders.

          @imcjb:

          I want 8 x 8TB (non-SMR) to upgrade my Synology

    • I'm showing $199 USD, how often do these hit 160 as im going to be in the states in a weeks time and could use a few

      • It jumped $40 USD while I had them in my cart umming and ahhing about it. Reddit says that bestbuy's price fluctuates between $140-$160 when they are on special (semi regularly) and the normal price. Might just have to get lucky…. Can you bring back 2 for me please!!!!!

  • Pulled the trigger on the Seagate. Have had it in my cart for a week or two at this price.

Orders when least at this price, it arrived in a big box with no pack Ng, the drives retail box just bumping around inside, fortunately it passed all tests and so far so good. However, buyer beware, Amazon’s packing has declined in recent years.

    • Which drive did you get inside?

      • I didn’t shuck it, using it as intended.

        • I got 8 drives delivered on Friday - shucked them today, all are the Barracuda Compute.

  • +1

My two arrived today, packaged well enough. Both drives are Barracuda Compute ST8000DM004

    Both working on arrival.

    • You got these? https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-3-5-Inch-Internal-S…

Did you shuck them to find out what drive they are? If not how do you find out what drive is inside without opening it? I've noticed I'm still getting ~130MB/s write speeds after putting 4TB of data on it, so is that a sign it's not an SMR drive?

I noticed that the price went down to $139USD for a few days and during that period I tried to contact Amazon support asking for a partial refund as I hadn't received it yet. They said no, whereas in the past I've had success getting partial refunds from Amazon when price changes occur shortly after purchasing.

Can't hurt to fire them off a support ticket asking the same thing as you could get $20USD back - seems to be hit and miss depending on the rep you get and their mood.

Yeah I shucked them. You linked to a Pro drive DM0004. Mine is DM004 (two zeroes). Part Number is 2CX188-568.

Reports show that this is a SMR drive, so write speed is slower. This guy did some testing on one. Looks decent enough to me. -EDIT- Actually that guy found that it is TGMR, not SMR.

I'm putting them into an unRaid pool, not a traditional RAID array, so the performance only affects the data actually stored on the drive, not the whole array. Also I use a SSD cache drive, so stuff only gets written to the storage drives at night.

I've got one preclearing now. I'll be running several cycles on them before adding them to the pool.

        • I have 4 in my cart - still deciding whether to pull the plug. Mine will be going into a Synology RAID. My intention is to also create another order for 4 (more than 4 at a time puts it over the GST threshold).

I know all the warnings about Seagate and putting these into a RAID array but I've been running 8 x 4TB Seagates shucked from external drives with not a single issue for almost 5 years, pretty much 24x7. I even bought a spare 4TB at the time and its still in its box…

Are you planning on doing any benchmarks?

        • @gadgetguy: I'm probably not going to benchmark it any more than the stats that the preclear script gives me. It's going to take a long time, but I'll post back when its done. Its sitting at 191MB/s at the moment, been running for an hour.

It will tell me if any errors or SMART data changes during the process, as well as the average speed, and maximum temperature.

        • I have both drives in my unRAID pool now. Both withstood a full preclear (basically zeroing the drive whilst trying to break it) without error. The slowest they got was 117MB/s at the end. Drive geometry slows them down at the end, whatever overlapping or shingling technology they use is no doubt amplified by the geometry. It has to read what's there, recalculate and combine the new data, then write it out. They spin at 5425rpm, so that limits speed too.

The drives seem good, and I've replace two five year old drives with them.

    • Is that the "good" (non-SMR) one?

  • My two also just arrived and are both the Barracuda Compute. If I got the Archives I would have bought a two bay nas to put them in but as I have 2 spare hdd bays in my desktop I’ll install them in RAID1 there for more frequent read/write use. I’ll then backup these drives with another external drive or nas.

    • What's that mean, SMR or not SMR?

      • Not. This PDF says the ST8000DM004 is a TGMR.

        https://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/barracud…

        • @hamwhisperer: this is interesting as it suggests that TGMR doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t SMR. Perhaps I should use the drives as backup drives in my nas rather than a more frequent read/write drive in my desktop…. :/

        • @schnackysmores:

Guy on Reddit is testing and getting a consistent 150 MBPS, even after filling it.

someone else posted "I did a write benchmark with a 10TB file from SSD to this drive, got a steady 180MB/s all the way through."

I think whatever technology it is looks like a significant improvement over the archive drives.

        • @gadgetguy: surprisingly though the quoted read/write speeds are same for the archive and barracuda at 150mbs.
Also would be interested to know what SSD he used for a 10TB file transfer :P

        • @schnackysmores: I mean hey man, I take no pleasure in it, I'd prefer you guys are right. I hate SMR, wish it would die out. Very very bad in a NAS situation where all 6 of my disks need to write, for every byte written.

The less of them out there, the better.

        • @schnackysmores:

Yeah but the point is the word "consistent". The SMR drives are known for slowing down after getting near capacity. There's no evidence of that (so far) in these drives.

  • I got the same barracuda drive in mine. I didn’t shuck it though. I just used some disc tools to reveal the part number which is as above

  • What tools do people use to identify the drive model inside?

  • is there any tutes or videos on how to shunk this particular external Hard Drive? Looking to get one of these and put it inside my optiplex 9020

    Thanks.

    • A metal spudger would make it easier, but I used the edge of my box opening knife to go around the seam and pop the clips. You will break clips though, so there's no pretending you didn't open it at warranty time.

  • not a best deal
