  • Great deal if its actually a red.

  • This item does not ship to Sydney, Australia :(

  • $29.75/TB price is getting down there

  • Drop the price another $40 AUD and somehow let me buy 7 without the stupid GST rule and I'd be all over it.

    • Just buy 4 and then another 3?

      • Still a tiny bit too much $ :( I already have 5's in my NAS you see, so I'd prefer either 10s or very cheap 8s
Not a bad deal but I think there's been better right?

        • You dont want cheap for NAS, you want WD RED or Seagate NAS drives

        • @asa79:

You could argue the opposite, that you actually need the most reliable drive in a single disk non redundant scenario.

In a home backup scenario with redundant drives the 0.02 difference in reliability is less important.

  • If you are lucky, It will be red drive. If not,it will be white drive

  • Bought local version of this from MWave last year for $650. It does have Red NAS drives.

  • Got one sent to Adelaide. If it's a shuckable red then it'll go into the NAS, if not no big whoop.
    Cheers

    • It's unlikely to be an actual Red-labelled drive. It will be a generic WD80EZZX however per my link that is believed to be a Red.

      • Yeah, understood.

      • If its not a Red, you dont get the same warranty guarantee for 24/7?

        • You'd lose the warranty as soon as you shuck it though, wouldn't you?
Unless it's possible to shuck them without breaking any warranty seals/other visible signs.

        • @Necron: My last Seagates once you open them, you can send the bare drives back but only had a 1 year warranty, had to reseal it back in enclosure to get the 3 yr warranty for the last couple that died, not sure about WD and their warranty for this situation tho

        • @asa79: Fair enough. I'm not sure if I'd send it back to amazon US or if WD australia would take it.

        • @Necron: You would send to WD. Seagate you send to Singapore address. Havent had to return any WD Reds yet touch wood

        • @asa79: Groovy. From what I've read just recently it seems WD don't tend to mind if drives are shucked, though that's based on other user's experience. TIL.

        • @Necron:

          Reliability >>>> Warranty though

  • How can it doesn’t have wifi connection :-(
Does anyone know if I can use this with Readyshare in my netgear router?

    • If you're going to actually use it for something get a Synology. Not sure if they have wifi though.

  • if you're after HDDs for a NAS, why not select the Dual Drive which says "RAID optimized WD Red drives" ?

    • +1

      Price almost doubles.

      • Because you get 2 drives?

        • +2

          2x 4TB

        • @ajd4096: Wow I didn't even consider that, that's a bloody rip-off alright!

  • +1

what does the color code mean?

    • +3

      Different uses (kinda)

Green is cheap and eco friendly
      Blue is standard
Black is supposed to be the fastest and best
Red is for use in a NAS as well as desktop
White is the same as red (I believe)

Red is desirable because of its NAS capability

The dual drive version seems better value. 2 drives for $329 before shipping.

    • +1

But that is RAID-0 that means 8TB dual drives got two 4TBs not two 8TBs

    • You mean 2 x 4TB drives? You would have to be nuts to buy that…!!
      2 x 8TB is $529 USD…

Anyway, i have 5 of these ive pulled out of their case. This price is only a few dollars cheaper than they normally are.
      Great value WD drives.
It seems most people seem to think "red" drives are some sort of magical high end disk, its just their 5400RPM disks with a firmware flag or two specifically designed for hardware RAID controllers, which most people who buy them dont own.
Either way they are great lower power disks for a home NAS.
If you want performance the enterprise 8TB 7200RPM Toshiba disks from ebay at ~$340 are much faster and likely more reliable.
Depends on what you are after, i have both setups for different purposes.

      • What if i just want a reliable but not costly 4tb hhd to store some photos? wont use it as a nas, dont want to pay more for those "black label" or "for enterprises" ones. Any recommendation apart from red wd?

        • All HDDs (or SSDs, or memory cards) are a throw of the dice. Anyone who tells you specific models otherwise is only guessing.
Three copies, one offsite. The ONLY way to store data unless you are ok waking up tomorrow and it not being there.

    • The Duo are guaranteed to have Red Drives in them as well

what are these like? Anyone know? Failure rate?

  • Just bought 2 shipped to Adelaide. Gonna shuck em and chuck em in my nas. Thanks for the deal :D

  • They'll only let you order 3 max - I need 8 for my Synology.

Tried doing multiple orders and it still blocked me. CBA creating 2 new accounts - let's see if the price goes any lower.

  • +1

Type of drives: WD quality drives

    • Pretty sure it has the white labelled EZZX similar to the 5400rpm red. My MyCloud also presumably has a 3TB version of EZZX too…. no complains after 3 years of use… Same drive with USB interface @$31/TB.

      • Thats what the website says, the Duo has Red against it

        • You have to pay double the price /TB for duo. You get what you pay for. But any WD 5400rpm drive should be good enough for me as it's likely to offer similar performance/reliability etc. I just don't want to pay for the label 'Red'.

        • @quasims: Talking about people purchasing it for Red Drives to use out of the case. Users that arent using it to that reason any drive will work

        • @asa79:
Shuck it or use external, I won't touch 7200rpm for a NAS. As per my understanding if it's got to do anything with NAS you need 5400rpms for reliability, reds or not. I may shuck it if time permits may be after the warranty expires.

        • +1

@quasims: WD RED are 5400rpm https://www.wdc.com/products/internal-storage/wd-red.html and WD RED Pros are 7200rpm https://www.wdc.com/products/business-internal-storage/wd-re…

If these are RED then the USB drive will only be running at 5400rpm

        • @asa79:
That's what I'm hoping for, as I don't want it to run down its life in 2 years (if it runs too fast). Didn't know Reds Pro's are now available but these are premium product presently, and must be using superior manufacturing process and components (bearing and motor etc.). An overkill for a home NAS.

        • @quasims: my last 4TB external were seagate XT and they were 7200 in an external usb 3.0

        • @asa79:
How do you rate them from reliability point of view? i had a 3Tb Seagate failed on me 5 years ago, and i changed camps since that time.

        • @quasims: WD RED 4TB have been great for the last 2-3 years 24/7, Seagate XT 4TB i had 4 die on in me in sequence in about 4 weeks after about 2 years 24/7
Given that my samsung 2TB have been going 24/7 for nearly 5-6 yrs and not one fault

        • @asa79:
This is why I think 5400rpm is perfect for nas application. 25% lower speed but just right price point for inexpensive bearing metals to provide reasonable lifespan. faster drives typically die sooner if they do not use the premium quality rotating parts made from fancier materials.

        • @quasims: I agree for USB tho 7200 is better

  • Thanks OP. Bought one, planning to stick it to the USB port on my MyCloud.

  • Will wait and see.

  • Has anyone received it as yet? Is it confirmed red inside?

    Got the answer here

  • Merged from WD 8TB My Book USB3.0 External Hard Drive US$184/AU$236 Shipped @ Amazon US

What's more to say, 8TB hard drive at a great price.

Believed to be WD Red drives with a white label and easily shuckable for your linux ISO server

    Price history: https://camelcamelcamel.com/Book-Desktop-External-Drive-WDBB…

    • Over the years, I've had a number of WD external hard drives fail on me after a 2-3 years of very light use. It could just be my bad luck but I thought I would share that. I only buy passport drives now and I seem to have better luck with those, I don't know why.

      • They're a business. And a successful one at that (mostly). If they're binning the higher vibration drives into cheaper externals i wouldn't be surprised.

    • -1

      Internal for this price plz!

      • +1

Yea it's called shucking the case.

        • No warranty etc. Quite different. Also I'd expect these drives are deliberately less reliable (binned higher vibration etc).

    • I'm waiting on the Samsung T5 deals. Been awhile.

    • very tempted by this. wouldn't have to worry about local photo storage for some time.

    • +1

Just as an FYI I needed to upgrade the drives in my QNAP NAS (previously had 4TB Red's) and wanted to replace with 8TB drives.

I ordered some of these WD 8TB My Book drives from Amazon (a bit over a month ago) for this price to see if I could shuck the drives from them and use in the NAS.

FYI it works perfectly (the drives from the MyBook are labelled as a WD80EZAZ compared to the original standalone WD Red which is a WD80EFZX - but as far as the QNAP is concerned it worked perfectly).

    • What's the deal with warranty?

I'm pretty sure that in case of failure, WD makes the owner pay to ship from AU to wherever-they-are — when you purchase it here in AU.

In case of a failure, do we need to ship it to the USA or…?

      • +2

After submitting your RMA you would need to send it to here (or they may say somewhere else in Asia)

        Greystone Data Systems Vietnam
62A Linh Trung Export Processing Zone II
        Thu Duc District
        Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
        Postal code : 721057
        Phone number: +84-87291473
        Attn: WD RMA Operations

I had to return a MyBook 16Gb (which I purchased from Amazon.de) and it cost about $100 through AusPOst, but what are you going to do.
